Most off board dacs use a 9v square battery

Completely dependent on dac/amp and how much you spend. The low range i agree.

mine range from AA 9V to internal rechargeable battery.

This is good news. Hopefully an accessory manufacturer can produce a lightning cable that's more durable than Apple's standard design. The current version is prone to fraying at the ends.

there, I fixed it for you

He's right. I've had at least two certified Apple lightning connectors break under the head, and more non-apple ones fail than I can count.

Here's a pic I took a year ago of the one that came w/my iPhone 5.

Your blind allegiance to a corporation that doesn't even know you exist and wouldn't care even if it did is touching, though.

the connector on the lightning cable is a piece of crap! i broke 3 cables already while i never broke one of the old cables

ugh same issue here, its the worst! it already seems to wear off on my 1.5 weeks old iPhone 6

What do you do with your cables? I've been using a single connector since they came out to charge my two iPhones and iPads without any problems. One needs to learn how to properly treat delicate electronic equipment.

Oh, and by the way, you should always unplug your lightning cable from your iPhone 6+ before you put it in your back pocket and sit on it. :(

I'm pretty careful with my cables, but I have noticed that the lightning cables are more prone to twisting at the ends than the older 30-pin cables were. I don't think it's the port itself. I took a look at one of my older cables and there appears to be a clear difference in the rubberized coating. I replaced 2 cables over the past year, one last weekend. It was clearly shorting, since whenever I plugged it into my Mac, OS X would say that it was drawing too much power, and would shut off the USB port.

Fortunately, Apple replaced them under warranty, but they should consider some further design changes if they haven't done so already.

yep same issue here, its like the end of the wire tries to twist in the opposite way its supposed to and puts too much pressure on it

I have the exact opposite issue with lightning vs 30 pin. I had replaced a ton of 30 pins but never have had an issue with lightning so far. I have 4(5, 5S, 6, one 3m from AppleCare), all still function.

What Apple needs to do is change their standard so accessory makers can build lighting docks that do not have to conform to the old 30 pin dock connector size.

If you want to use an Apple device while still in it's case- you have to have a case with no bottom coverage or do what I do and use a dremel and sugru to customize the base around the lightning connector.

Great. More ports for one of the worst connectors ever made. Think I'll send Apple a picture of our 20+ broken Lightning leads, including at least five Apple ones.

M.

You raise a good point. The current cables can easily be torn up. I haven't myself but I know folks who were easily careless enough to bend and rip their cables within a few weeks

Apple needs to redesign them with assumption that users will be careless and treat them like crap

We have 4 lightning port equipped iOS devices in our house, starting with the iPhone 5. Not a single damaged cable. Not a one.

Time to start caring for your stuff.

I had one lightning cable last two years, another like a month. My brother destroyed his very quickly and is using the one that came with my iPod.

I was really happy with a Griffin coiled cable when I had the 30-pin. I don't remember ever having issues with the connectors itself, it's always been the cables.

And yes, they are using some cheaper rubber coating. I have a 30-pin cable from 2003 that still is in top shape. Too bad it's a Firewire.

Clearly you or your cat did something inappropriate with that cable. They don't just spontaneously fray. I have my original iPhone 5 cables, they work perfectly.

Well it's funny how you complain about th connector and then as evidence show a connector which is completely fine! (The cable is messed up, which has nothing to do with the connector. Apple clearly needs to strengthen the cable attached to the connector).

Funny how you attribute your inability to state things clearly to someone else's blind allegiance to a corporation.

How about a Lightning connector on Apple's own… wireless keyboard, magic trackpad, mouse, Apple TV remote and Beats headphones ???

I've had the issue with the cables on my MacBook. It seems that Apple has moved to lower quality rubber coatings on their cables across the product line.

To all those complaining about broken cables. I think the lightning cables shred to easily. But dont think its Lightning's fault. In making the cable more "green" Apple seems to have made the cable more prone to breakage. If the same cable was made for USB-Micro or 30-Pin it would be the same result.

So Green cables, suck...

I bought Monoprice ones and they are much thicker but much stronger and last longer.

Sounds good.

Micro usb is terrible. I see so many broken ports, probably 50 for every one lightning port malfunction

Personally I'm excitedly expecting the new symmetric USB connector. I love standards and I think the new symmetric USB will take hold like wildfire. One of the main reasons I left Android and came to iOS was the current idiotic asymmetric microUSB connector, and the pure joy of lightning in comparison.

The Xperia Z3 gets around that awful connector to some extent by having a proprietary magnetic connector charging system, much like the magsafe thing on Apple laptops, so if I do jump ship soon back over to Android, I'll probably end up with a Z3 while waiting for the new symmetric USB system.

The lack of lightning female ports on accessories though has been a real PITA, and I think Apple may be too late here - by the time manufacturers start having the option of female lightning, the new symmetric USB will probably everywhere already.

I think maybe Apple needs to start thinking very hard about dumping lightning and going to the new standard: symmetric USB.

The connector itself is fine, sure, but the lightning cable failed and stopped working. Eventually I couldn't hold it just right so that it worked. Perhaps I misspoke. Replace "Connector" with "Cable." Not really a big difference. But given I said it "frayed" right under the head, it was pretty clear what I meant.

Funny how you attribute your inability to state things clearly to someone else's blind allegiance to a corporation.

Someone else's blind allegiance and my misspoken sentences are in no way related.

Apple will never dump their proprietary cable. MFI Certification net them some good money. I do credit Lightning for the creation of USB type C. I think we'd still be stuck with single sided cables for another decade if it wasn't for Apple... along with clunky flip phones with limited "smart" features and restrictive touch interfaces still.

I and many others would disagree with you. I did nothing to it.

Looked like this at first

But you're probably right. I'm just an idiot.

After it starts looking like the first picture you should probably wrap some electrical tape around it... just saying.
