I wonder if people who bought apple care before the policy change get a new phone. I was told if I dropped my phone and the screen broke for $49 I would get a new phone.

I would check the written agreements for your support coverage. They will probably override anything an employee said. Your agreement does allow for Apple to send you an advanced replacement phone if you put a hold on your credit card, so that option is still available for no extra charge with AppleCare+.

There really are some advantages to them being able to repair the phone. It avoids the potential for getting a phone with a different issue. I've had a couple bad replacement phones as well, and sometimes the new issue can be tricky to prove to Apple.

That's not how Apple's replacement program works.

What happens to all the iPhones etc Apple takes in for repair where the customer's already been issued a replacement, or customer returns? There's always been a constant stream of reports (in these forums and elsewhere) of people taking faulty devices into Apple Stores, and rejecting the first replacement offered due to scratches/marks etc.

Aww, no love for Canada?

I wonder why only Canada and Hong Kong were left out (Assuming I read the article correctly)

In Brazil, there isn't a single Apple Store. Every sale is made through the online Apple Store or by authorized resellers. Repairs are made by authorized 3rd-party technical assistance.

As far as I know, all 3 retail locations in Hong Kong provide iPhone 5c modular display replacements and have been for at least a month now. Not sure where 9to5Mac is getting their source...

I wonder how much this would cost..

And what it would cost on an iPhone 5C vs the iPhone 5S.

I've seen more cracked 5c's than not in the wild. Apparently they break from normal use, but I haven't seen anything online talking about this issue.

Those are marks from the factory. Same thing happens to phones sold at cost on the sales floor.

Are you saying that Apple always provides new-for-old replacements? I was pretty certain that it was often refurbs - here's a post from earlier this year for example:

Just to be clear, I'm also talking about out-of-warranty repairs where they charge you a repair fee but actually replace your phone rather than make you wait for an off-site repair, or where the damage isn't covered by the warranty (e.g. drop damage).

Otherwise what happens to all those iPhones that Apple previously accepted for screen repairs once they're fixed where they've already provided the customer with a white-box replacement?

Is it weird I want a 5c solely because I like the weight of it more than the 5s? If I wasn't a broke ass college kid I'd have a 5c and a 5s.
This. It use to be $99 and then a $49 deductible and they would give you a new phone! Now they want $99 and $79 and they replace the screen. What the hell is the point of the insurance?!?! If I had insurance and dropped my phone, I would be sure to dunk it in the toilet so they would give me a new phone as well.
This is probably going to be what ends up happening. Dunk it in the toilet/sink before taking it in to get your screen replaced so you get a whole new phone with a new battery, shell, home button, etc etc.

Again, the scuffs and scratches are from a factory. The same issue came from factories that produced the iPhone 5 for the sales floor. Recall "Scuffgate"?

http://www.ehow.com/facts_6946720_difference-between-refurbished-remanufactured.html

Apple (like many manufactures) remanufactures devices, as opposed to refurbishing devices.

So if you bought applecare+ for $99 you still need to pay $79?

It's accidental damage so yeah, you are paying something. How much is determined by whether you have apple care

----------

I'm just saying they use to give you a new phone instead of repairs.

And if you read the terms you agreed that Apple gets to decide if it's repair or replace, not you. And you granted them the right to change those rules at any time

Because they were a test area. As the article said, some stores were already doing them, this is just the full roll out

Let's do some basic maths:

Without AppleCare+:

1 Screen Replacements = 149$
1 Whole unit replacements = 269$

2 Screen Replacements = 149$ x 2 = 298$
2 Whole unit replacements = 269$ x 2 = 538$

With AppleCare+:

1 Screen Replacements = 99$ + 79$ = 178$
1 Whole unit replacements = 99$ + 79$ = 178$

2 Screen Replacements = 99$ + (79$ x 2) = 257$
2 Whole unit replacements = 99$ + (79$ x 2) = 257$

I'll let you decide how you want to spend your money.

apple is pricey

a price is a price. apple has a price for screen replacement and you can accept it or leave it. the math above my post is correct, but do not forget, that applecare covers more than just screen replacement with additional payment. after this repair, you still get to keep your warranty. sure, you can go to companies like podmod, which replaces the screen for 49$ or any other service you choose, which is pricewise much better. but some folks just need the apple logo over the store they go to and they will pay for it. i do not think that the repair market will be crushed if apple jumps in worldwide, and i do think that on the long run, apple will not offer this repairs, because users will try to save and avoid the price offered. looks like cosmetics to me, not like a real businessplan.
