And why is it any different from T-Mo iPhones?
These are true world phones. They support all bands. Not like T mobile etc which didn't support sprint or China.
And why is it any different from T-Mo iPhones?
Would Verizon still activate a sim free phone?
Seriously hope you are right. I am looking to buy another 6+ but wanted to wait till they announced the Sim-Free unlocked phone. However i was slightly put off when i visited the Canadian Apple website and observed that their "Official" unlocked phone has identical 16 lte (and not 20 lte bands) just like their American counterparts. Only phone with the 20 bands is the Sprint version but that is out of our purview due to their bizarre locking policies. The unlocked or SIM FREE phone would probably not even work with Cdma carriers (Please see my earlier post regarding the disclaimer on the Canadian apple website)These are true world phones. They support all bands. Not like T mobile etc which didn't support sprint or China.
It would presumably work just fine on Sprint's LTE network. But possibly would not support fallback to 3G/CDMA.
No difference whatsoever... they just have those silly agreements with carriers not to advertise a phone as unlocked for x amount of days. Only in America.
The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a wireless contract commitment or a carrier installment plan. You can activate and use the unlocked iPhone on the supported wireless network of your choice, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Sprint in the United States.
If you don’t want a multiyear service contract, or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone is the best choice. If you choose T-Mobile, your iPhone comes with a T-Mobile SIM card already installed. You will need to contact T-Mobile or visit an Apple Retail Store to activate your iPhone.
Otherwise, the unlocked iPhone does not come with a nano-SIM card for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, or iPhone 5c so you’ll need to get one from any supported carrier worldwide. To start using your iPhone, simply insert the SIM card into the slot and turn on iPhone by pressing and holding the On/Off button for a few seconds. Then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone.
Purchasing an unlocked iPhone means you will not qualify for the lower iPhone price associated with a contract or a carrier installment plan. The unlocked iPhone 6 model is A1586. The unlocked iPhone 6 Plus model is A1524. The T-Mobile iPhone 6 model is A1549. The T-Mobile iPhone 6 Plus model is A1522. For details on LTE network support, please see www.apple.com/iphone/LTE.
Only if you finance.
TMo iPhone since day 1 with an AIO SIM.

We have here in the US, it was called the TMobile or Verizon full price option from Apple Store.
Disclaimer: I only mention the major carriers.
I don't think your statement is true. I think there is a lot of confusion about this and I did some research. Here is what I found, I believe this to be true but could be mistaken.
The unlocked T-Mobile phone is A1549 (6) and A1522 (6+). This is the GSM model and supports GSM and LTE. Both At&T and T-Mobile are GSM carriers and you could easily jump to AT&T using an unlocked T-Mobile phone. This type of phone is the most limited and supports the fewest bands.
There is a CDMA version of A1549 and A1522 which is typically sold by Verizon. This phone supports GSM, LTE and CDMA (a little more versatile). So an unlocked version of this phone would theoretically work on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. Although the carriers limit this by "whitelisting" devices issued under their name, essentially blacklisting devices issues under other carriers. I've read lost of conflicting accounts on what the carriers allow. Sprint seems to be the worst and probably for the reason below.
Sprint offers a third version A1586 (6) and A1524 (6+). This model has only been available via Sprint and is ALWAYS sold locked. This model supports GSM, LTE and CDMA but also supports TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA. "You can get access to TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA bands which opens up use to basically every carrier in the world, this will prove to be especially useful in China." This phone is the most versatile and previously was only available in a locked version.
I'm assuming that Apple will be selling the A1586/A1524 versions as the "SIM-Free" version. Unlocked and compatible with almost every carrier in the world.
Lots of articles out there about this. I found this one to be the clearest.
Yup this is mind boggling. I was really hoping for the sim free model to be the 1586/1524 sprint version. I already have the Verizon iPhone 6+ purchased full price at the apple store. This is the best bet for you in the US.
The author in that article you posted earlier, also chose to go with the Verizon handset as it offered more flexibility and options. He called it the "best bang for your buck in the US."
Anytime they've sold unlocked in the US a s unlocked they've always been the TMO\ATT banded versions, except without a lock.
In the back room, the phones are all the same. It's not until they scan them and apply a cellular profile that they become locked... so the "unlocked" is just in the way they apply or don't apply a lock profile. They're going to be the same model they're currently selling.
The 1524 is almost identical (the world GSM version) to our 1522 but offers more LTE bands... but even as I travel internationally 2 weeks out of the month, the US unlocked (TMO) version has worked everywhere without a hitch.
Good news: This model supports more European, Asian & African LTE bands Bad news: This model supports fewer North, Central & South American LTE bands (unlocked T-Mobile iPhone 6 supports these bands).
Bottom line: don't get too giddy and determine what model supports your international jet setter lifestyle better by checking here - http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

I have a GoPhone plan pay-per-month which I am using with an iPhone 5. Can I just buy one of these unlocked iPhone 6+ models, and take the phone to an AT&T store and have them swap the SIM card? And it will work??
Looks like it is going to be the A1586!!! I just placed my order online and will be picking it up at the store later on today.

Looks like they are going to be selling the A1586/A1524 variety which is the most versatile and the one that supports the most bands. So it's not the same at the T-Mobile / AT&T version.

Congrats! I purchased the A1524 and i confirmed with Apple that it would work with any US carrier including Verizon/Sprint.Picked up my phone today. A1586
Activated with AT&T with no problem.
I guess I'm not seeing it. What bands do the A1586 (CDMA) and A1524 (CDMA) not support?
----------
Look at Italy or Japan (for ex). This "new" model has more bands.
Brazil (for ex), the TMo version is better.
Also, there is no support for T-Mobiles band 12 700MHz freq on either phone.
No. Verizon will not activate any phone unless the IMEI number is in their database.

Maybe i need to do more research, cause according to this chart/stats on the official apple website, t-mobile/at&t/Verizon are essentially the same phones except that the sprint model has the 4 additional TD-LTE bands and TD-SCDMA.
!586 and 1524 are the only "sim free" models being sold around the world. Except maybe Canada where the sim-free model is 1549/1522.
PS: I do not see the band 12 you were alluding to in your post.
Seriously hope you are right.
