If an iPhone5S launches in January there will be a lot of pretty hacked off people.

Sounds to me like a June release and if that is the case then you will get a conformation in April if Apple shows off iOS 7 at an event that month. That would mean a WWDC showing and June / July release.

Weird, I was thinking last night how slow their current 2 year release cycle is and that they should release the 5S six months after 5's launch. As long as the software support is top notch and the hardware isn't too different, 5 buyers won't feel screwed. iPad 4 has twice the processing power than the 3, that's too big a difference.

People expect more from Apple, and if a year from now all they release is an iPhone 5S, then that'll only add to their downfall.

In the electronics world, it is an exercise in futility, to try and keep up with the latest and supposed greatest of the day, no matter the brand. No matter what, there are going to be people who just upgraded, and feel that they got the proverbial shaft, even though they did so of their own volition.

In the end, it really shouldn't matter whether or not Apple releases a phone every year. What does matter, is whether or not one is happy with their purchase. If one isn't happy with the product(s) being offered at the time, one can either keep what he or she has until something better comes along, or change direction to a different product entirely.

Apple products are not investments. If more people would realize that, maybe there wouldn't be so much consternation involving issues like this. Self-worth should not revolve around whether or not one has the latest Apple product release, in my opinion. But, it appears for several on the forum, it is all about being able to brag for 6 months, that one does have the latest and greatest. Seems rather petty to me.

This this this AND this.

The most annoying part about a lot of fanboys (which is a title I include myself in) is that some act so entitled, so deserving, so... OWED, that anything Apple does short of a magical product that makes them money in 6 months (so they can upgrade for free and show their friends) is a disaster worth decrying the company they "love" everywhere they can post.

If Apple could fabricate a new phone every month it'd be AWESOME. It'd be worth it just to see the "how can I scam my carrier for an early upgrade because I can't be bothered to honor a contract I signed?" threads.

If you want something, buy it. If you don't, don't.

If you can't afford to keep up, get a better job or don't have the "latest and greatest". Believe it or not, Apple doesn't owe you that.

I hope this is true. I'm glad I'm a 1%'er! Makes life AWESOME (and anyone can join me with a little hard work). You can always have the latest and greatest if you can afford it :).

If you can't, make some changes. It's no ones fault but yours.

It wouldn't surprise me if Apple accelerates the cycle slightly (perhaps every 9 months), or "catches up" on the S cycle to return to a summer launch schedule. Competition is heating up and with Samsung's kitchen sink approach guaranteeing something "new" from them every few months, plus with the Windows Phone 8 launch, a quicker turnaround for the 5S may be warranted. I doubt it will be in Q1-13, though. What's more likely is that they will start parts production a bit sooner so that they don't run into the supply issues that have dogged the iPhone 5. Fewer parts will be different this time around, so that may be possible.

No matter what the 5S actually is though? :)

Oh great. Now in addition to having to throw away my iPad 3, I"ll have to scrap my iPhone 5 too.

Thanks a lot Apple :( At least this stuff is recyclable.

Why do you need to "throw away" your 3rd-gen iPad or iPhone 5? My 3rd gen iPad works just fine and uses the same CPU that's in the brand new iPad mini, so it will be supported for a while.

Do you buy a new car every year?

If an iPhone5S launches in January there will be a lot of pretty hacked off people.

Why? Because they don't want Apple to evolve and improve it's products as fast as possible? Because they're so selfish that no one should be allowed to have something more up to date than what they have? Because they don't want Apple to remain number one in the smart phone business? Most likely because they're a bunch of cry-baby children.

iPhone 5s

Could this be Apple's innovative approach to manufacturing problems? Maybe the "S" means SELF - as in they send you a box of parts and you put it together yourSELF?

I doubt this, but it wouldn't be the worst thing for Apple to do. As long as they add meaningful features then I'm all for an accelerated release cycle. Better products to the people faster.

Need a fresh idea to revamp iPhone

I think its very high time to see some 'fresh thoughts' on iPhone and its overall look-and-feel otherwise Apple may lose the competition with other competitors rolling up their sleeves...

No more processor upgrades to make it a new iPhone... may be as Sir Jonathan Ive is now 'commanding officer' of the iOS software design, we might see some nice improvements but I seriously think Apple should stop releasing phones every quarter/other quarter.... THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX AGAIN!

I love my iphone but there are many features in other new upcoming phones which makes me envy ( not for the phone but for the feature)...

come on Apple, we are counting on you....

Very well said, and I believe Apple now is trying to attract newbie rather than asking returning customers to change their device one-by-one.

Newbie will only buy what they are told to and what they see people are using, i.e. a new product with a established face!

Apple would want a product to be on the market for longer than four months in order to get back the cost of development. Unless:

1) It is just too expensive to keep making iPhones 4 and 4s and they need a low end phone.
(OR)
2) There is something really wrong with the flagship 5 and it needs to be replaced ASAP. Bendgate?
(OR)
3) Some incredible technology is ready that will put a nail in the competitions's coffin.

3a) We'll finally get NFC

Completely agree. I for one would like to go back to the summer release schedule.

The only rational response to this story is to tell everyone you know that they should NOT buy an iPhone 5 because a new one is coming out soon.

I agree that Apple shouldn't hold certain features hostage only to the latest models. My wife has an iPhone 4, and I know that it could run Siri. In fact, Siri was an app that I believe even worked on the 3GS before Apple put it inside the iPhone.

However, I run into many people that don't understand that you don't have to wait until the end of your two-year contract to upgrade and get the cheapest price. If you check with your carrier, you may be eligible after 18 months, or even just one year. AT&T had an unwritten rule that if your bill was over $99, you could upgrade every year. You were in fact required to restart your two-year contract, however, if you had gotten a new phone the year before, you were really only extending your original contract by one year. I also found when my plan changed to less than $99 a year, that I could upgrade to a more expensive plan for just two months prior to the new iPhone, and AT&T would shorten the renewal date so that I could get a new iPhone every year. I might spend an extra $40 over two months, but if I saved $200 on the new phone it was definitely worth it.

I like to keep my gadgets, but yes, indeed, I'm with Deutsche Telekom and we can upgrade for no extra charges after 18months, pretty much the same conditions.
They are however the only carrier in Germany to offer this, Vodafone have 1 month I believe and some nothing.

Also, 18 months is no good with a new phone coming 6 months later on. :p
I started my contract at a silly point of time in the year so I'm happy about the fall release schedule and my 18 months, which enables me to be a day 1 owner even. :D

Betcha they want to get past the difficult production process of the 5 as soon as possible. They can't just change to a new anodizing method mid cycle, or they'd be admitting there was a flaw and have everyone returning their phones for a new one. So, bump up the 5S and get it out of the way.
