So buy an iPhone 4S it is still awesome.

If an iPhone5S launches in January there will be a lot of pretty hacked off people.
with this little time between releases, i wonder what convincing hardware improvements apple could provide.
Ok.
So we could say rather confidently that the 5S will have the same body.
It might have a better grade of aluminum and a better grade of anodization.
In the electronics world, it is an exercise in futility, to try and keep up with the latest and supposed greatest of the day, no matter the brand. No matter what, there are going to be people who just upgraded, and feel that they got the proverbial shaft, even though they did so of their own volition.
In the end, it really shouldn't matter whether or not Apple releases a phone every year. What does matter, is whether or not one is happy with their purchase. If one isn't happy with the product(s) being offered at the time, one can either keep what he or she has until something better comes along, or change direction to a different product entirely.
Apple products are not investments. If more people would realize that, maybe there wouldn't be so much consternation involving issues like this. Self-worth should not revolve around whether or not one has the latest Apple product release, in my opinion. But, it appears for several on the forum, it is all about being able to brag for 6 months, that one does have the latest and greatest. Seems rather petty to me.
Weird, I was thinking last night how slow their current 2 year release cycle is and that they should release the 5S six months after 5's launch. As long as the software support is top notch and the hardware isn't too different, 5 buyers won't feel screwed. iPad 4 has twice the processing power than the 3, that's too big a difference.
People expect more from Apple, and if a year from now all they release is an iPhone 5S, then that'll only add to their downfall.
Oh great. Now in addition to having to throw away my iPad 3, I"ll have to scrap my iPhone 5 too.
Thanks a lot AppleAt least this stuff is recyclable.

This this this AND this.
The most annoying part about a lot of fanboys (which is a title I include myself in) is that some act so entitled, so deserving, so... OWED, that anything Apple does short of a magical product that makes them money in 6 months (so they can upgrade for free and show their friends) is a disaster worth decrying the company they "love" everywhere they can post.
If Apple could fabricate a new phone every month it'd be AWESOME. It'd be worth it just to see the "how can I scam my carrier for an early upgrade because I can't be bothered to honor a contract I signed?" threads.
If you want something, buy it. If you don't, don't.
If you can't afford to keep up, get a better job or don't have the "latest and greatest". Believe it or not, Apple doesn't owe you that.
I hope this is true. I'm glad I'm a 1%'er! Makes life AWESOME (and anyone can join me with a little hard work). You can always have the latest and greatest if you can afford it.
If you can't, make some changes. It's no ones fault but yours.
It wouldn't surprise me if Apple accelerates the cycle slightly (perhaps every 9 months), or "catches up" on the S cycle to return to a summer launch schedule. Competition is heating up and with Samsung's kitchen sink approach guaranteeing something "new" from them every few months, plus with the Windows Phone 8 launch, a quicker turnaround for the 5S may be warranted. I doubt it will be in Q1-13, though. What's more likely is that they will start parts production a bit sooner so that they don't run into the supply issues that have dogged the iPhone 5. Fewer parts will be different this time around, so that may be possible.
I agree that Apple shouldn't hold certain features hostage only to the latest models. My wife has an iPhone 4, and I know that it could run Siri. In fact, Siri was an app that I believe even worked on the 3GS before Apple put it inside the iPhone.
However, I run into many people that don't understand that you don't have to wait until the end of your two-year contract to upgrade and get the cheapest price. If you check with your carrier, you may be eligible after 18 months, or even just one year. AT&T had an unwritten rule that if your bill was over $99, you could upgrade every year. You were in fact required to restart your two-year contract, however, if you had gotten a new phone the year before, you were really only extending your original contract by one year. I also found when my plan changed to less than $99 a year, that I could upgrade to a more expensive plan for just two months prior to the new iPhone, and AT&T would shorten the renewal date so that I could get a new iPhone every year. I might spend an extra $40 over two months, but if I saved $200 on the new phone it was definitely worth it.
As a recent Ex-Apple employee, I can confirm that I've seen a lot of iPhone 5's (not 5s) having a manufacturing stamp date on Dec 11 2011. It's normal to start early production.
