MobileMe came out in 2008 thus giving subscribers with .Mac accounts a @Me address.

And folks that signed up for MobileMe got the same @me.com

----------

I'm confused... Does this new policy apply to email as well as calendars as the quoted text from the article indicates? If so, that would be great as those are the only two things I use in mobile.me and would love to avoid the whole icloud (and Lion) thing if those are all I need.

No. this is email only. For those that don't have lion and have no intentions at this time to get it. Otherwise you do a standard transfer and use iCloud with your iOS devices and (if it is on Lion) your computer.

but no matter after June 30th you will be doing it on iCloud. If you don't move your account over they will almost certainly deleted it after that date and you lose everything including the username.

I've had my MobileMe email since it debuted years ago. Now the question is if I choose to upgrade to iCloud, does my MobileMe email just go away and now I have to use my iCloud for iTunes purchases? Just a little confused what will happen with either of the choices on the me.com site...:confused::confused:

No. If you go over to iCloud the @me.com email works the same as before, as will your contacts etc syncing. Your purchases can either stay on your other ID or you can switch for new purchases, that's up to you

Chatting with Apple, they sent me to this URL to set up my email client with the iCloud settings. Apparently they are NOT discontinuing the IMAP connectivity.

This is good news for my first-generation MacBook Pro that cannot run Lion due to its 32-bit processor. Still sucks they restricted Lion to 64-bit processors only.

Did it work??? just been through the same senario with "Chat" and given same link.

Don't feel bad, it's even worse when you do have 64bit processors and Mountain Lion is your last entitled upgrade.

here we go...again

Not another trip down lets throw everything in the air and see how it lands(lane). Free (working with cool mac address), not free (still working), not free (not working, then sort of working), free (working? not working?).

Does anybody know what actually happens if you follow the Apple prompts from the email for systems that are not supported (10.6.8 for example because Lion is actually a turkey)? I believe mail will work, but do your aliases follow? Do they have to be transferred one by one or before the main account? What T F happens to calenders and contacts? Does one ignore the email and go through the tedious hoops of setting up each address/account using the info from googling that always has a critical missing piece of information or terrifying trips through terminal that are likely to be (terminal)?

Why does it have to be so hard? Please, is there a safe comprehensive set of directions to keep mail, calenders and contacts working on 10.6 that doesn't involve google (accounts) and changing 11 years of addresses. The new Apple certified method appears to be a trap and the Genius(?) bars just toe the company line and mantras more than usual.
I couldn't give a flying fig for all the other "features" thanks to Dropbox.

Well if you're AppleID WAS an @me.com email, then was it a MobileMe account? If so, then it was asking you to put it in for iCloud purposes, in which case your MobileMe email should have received several messages from Apple telling you to "move" your account to an iCloud account.

Well, I called Apple Care and they took the line that 'it works, so what's the problem'. I was surprised by that reaction in view of the articles that I've read about people trying to combine their Apple ID's and their MobileMe addresses. Maybe I missed the reason. Perhaps it was about people having more than one Apple ID. I did for a while. It was common fairly common from what I've heard.

...Not sure if sharing email addresses was the real issue there, no offence [sic].

I jumped off track a little because I thought it was similar to the HUGE row that I had over combining things. My apologies...
