Good on Apple! I wonder if the other tech giants are following suit...
As others have pointed out, Apple is actually one of the last tech employers to get on board with this message. Microsoft, Google, and others issued statements about protecting pay on day 1. Apple is almost a month behind.

Not to mention, they're largely back tracking their initial statement.

What are they a month behind? In saying they are doing it or doing it?

Using temporary/contractors/consultants is a way of not overloading the business with help that aren’t relevant to the core business. Apple is not unique in this regard.

Taxes, labor laws and even benefits are applicable to temporary help. Many firms that provide these services give their people benefits.

Apple's Silicon Valley campuses will be shut down until at least May 3 due to the extension of the shelter in place order in the Bay Area. Apple's retail stores in the United States and other countries outside of China also remain closed, though some could begin opening as soon as the first half of April.
And here I was thinking Apple had another trick up its sleeve. :(

That would have been absolutely pathetic to cut those workers’ pay just to save $35 million (that’s an ANNUAL figure for the 600 workers, per the Journal). AAPL has >$200BN in cash.

Glad to see they reversed course.

Also - It’s worth noting that it doesn’t even make financial sense to cut their pay because the brand damage from potential negative publicity is worth a lot more than $35 million.

That would be on the assumption, they would go back to Apple. Their could be a more interesting decision to be more self-reliant thanks to all this.

Nice one Apple. Many companies are showing their true colours during this crisis. All those that have helped and gone out of their way to be helpful know they will get this loyalty back ten-fold later down the line. The ones that haven't will be wondering why their sales are down, and honestly not having a clue why so. What goes around comes around.

What's pathetic is that they are "contractors" in the first place. They're not really contractors, they are employees forced to go onto contract so that the employer can wash their hands of all the employee benefits and rights. Sickening.

Not always the case. I contract through choice. Now IR35 rulings that force someone to be an employee for tax purposes, but independent for benefits and rights is sickening. But the whole point of that is to end up in the place you are describing.

Exactly. I know people are probably saying “Apple doesn’t HAVE to pay them. How do you think they’re so rich?”

But nah... Apple has a BOATLOAD of money. They can afford to pay their workers for months.
They could afford to give you a billion dollars too. Doesn’t mean they should or are obligated.
