That's only if you navigate with the Apple Remote.
https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201664

I understand that. But you shouldn't have to use a separate product to control the one you bought from Apple.
It's 2015.
The built in remote and the software that it uses should be more robust and easier to use. That's all I'm saying.
And it gets trickier to use when you are using more than one iTunes account- input is very slow and cumbersome.
I'm hoping (and expecting) that any product refresh will address these issues as well.

If Apple could swing this, paired with apps from Nintendo, and a Bluetooth gamepad, they could completely disrupt the casual gaming console market.

I want Siri for my MacBook Pro.

And the option of built-in 4G while we're at it.

I'm an Apple guy but there is nothing Siri does better than Google Now. Google Now is faster and more accurate in voice transcription, and can do more things. Siri has been a major disappointment by comparison. I kept waiting for Apple to improve Siri and add more features and they've done very little.

forget the watch, this is exactly what I was waiting for and something people will actually use. AAPL is going to make a lot of $ with this.

Not me. I am not interested in new Apple TV. The current one ATV2 that I am using still working perfectly.

It's funny why people have to say they are fan first of a product before telling their dislike of said product. I do like Siri, and only use it even after I tried Google and Cortana. Siri gives what is necessary and has a friendly user experience, which I like better than stiff Google.

I agree. A JB ATV2 is so much more functional than anything I've seen described here. Even if it's only 720p. I can attach to any device and play almost any format.

Now if Apple opens it up to standard protocols like SMB, NFS, and DLNA so it can work with other boxes in the network, I'll be first in line to buy it. I doubt it though.

I only pay for Beamer, and that's all I need. :) I have a 10TB library of what I like to watch.

(Actually I also subscribe for Crunchyroll).

At £59, I'll take the Apple TV 3, and I'll leave you lot to fuss pedantically over the "better" upcoming model. It's a box which you watch TV on; you select your show, and... well, you watch it. You should be more interested in WHAT YOU ARE WATCHING, than the thing that serves it to you - you shouldn't ever have to think about that. I don't think about my windows when I am looking out of them at the sunset...

There's not THAT much that can be "better", which is worth the extra ££ and waiting for.

If you only want to watch TV, why buy one at all?

If they do open this out to the App Store, it has the potential to completely shake up the games console market just like the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad destroyed Nintendo's handheld gamer business.

Oh yes, in that case I sit corrected; I didn't think of that

hopefully with app store, the new ATV would have more back doors for JB. that would open it up to more features, XBMC.

Except that hasn't happened. Nintendo's handheld market isn't destroyed by any stretch of the imagination.

This is rumored to be unveiled at WWDC and go on sale in the fall around the other product refreshes, so it stands to reason it could have the A9, or A9X. I wonder what it’s gaming capabilities could be if it had an A9X being maximally used and 4GB of RAM. Since its plugged into the wall, power efficiency isn’t really a problem. I think an A9X combined with Metal, 4GB RAM and an Apple designed controller in space grey, gold, or silver, matching the TV, could make it a very capable gaming console, aside from all of the other uses it would have. This thing could be astoundingly good. And the great part is that the Apple controller could be used on any Apple devices. I know realistically it will only have 2GB of RAM but it would be very capable if it had 4GB. The App Store would be full of hardcore games, not just the casual garbage. Using the iPhone as a controller is mindbendingly stupid because you have no tactile feedback with the iPhone, you can't use a touchscreen to control another screen, it inherently makes no sense. Nor would MFi controllers take it anywhere, as few know about their existence, and they are all abysmally terrible compared to Dual Shock 4. Apple designed controller would take it off though. I imagine a controller with Taptic engines built throughout, force feedback, etc. that would get developers going.

Thoughts?!

The problem I have with this product is that you can't quite do enough with it, unless it's a jailbroken 2nd gen. I think the potential is ambiguous, and that Apple need to make bold strides with it. Not sure they are that interested, otherwise wouldn't it have happened already? If it's just content deals for subscription services, it's not the Apple TV I necessarily need; apps would be great (particularly in the UK) but I suspect most of the functionality people are talking about replicates that of a last gen iPod touch/phone : camera Siri etc.
I think it needs to be faster and deeply integrated into tv functionality; whether they achieve this by combining it into a router, or directly into a tv I don't know... but I wonder whether the next one would be just another safe baby step albeit in the right general direction. Oh and the streaming movie prices could be more competetive. I have spoken ;)

If it doesn't do what ROKU can do and more it will be DOA. I seriously doubt it will be DOA so I'm looking forward to this product.

Gee thanks ;)

Actually - I have moved beyond any displeasure. I've simply chose to use my AppleTV solely for my iTunes video rentals. For everything else, I have other tech like a Roku 3.

Not sure I would revert back to an AppleTV for most of my other viewing.

I'd expect that Apps will be the hook for many to get back into the AppleTV; I don't use my current one for much other than Keynotes since I mostly watch Netflix and practically every home theater device supports Netflix directly.

I don't use my only gaming platform, a Playstation 3, much either; not enough time in the day for everything.

the i-devices did not hurt Nintendo's handheld gaming division. In fact, their handheld gaming devision was the only thing for the last couple years making profit.

Nintendo was hurting on the home console front. They expected the success of the Wii to carry forward with the Wii U, which was quite incorrect to assume.

The Wii U on the other hand, up until recently (Smash Bro and Kart release frame) was a resounding failure for sales.

I can't picture Nintendo putting their top A quality games on any devices other than their own hardware either. Nintendo itself already has limited developer partners making games for their consoles, Allowing those games on any competing hardware would only further hurt their comeback.

nevermind the fact that Nintendo allegedly has a new console in the works.

It doesn't do what the Roku does... nor will the new model. It wasn't DOA then, it won't be DOA now. There is a large market for what Apple produces.

For my uses, there are so many things unique to the Roku 3 that the Apple TV doesn't offer that Apple would have to do something amazing with this new model to draw my attention... an app store and Siri wouldn't be those things.

And that's the beauty of competition. I was on the fence between the Apple TV and the Roku four years ago. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the Roku, but decided to go with the Apple TV when Airplay and Mirroring were announced.

Right now I use a mix of Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.

I agree, ever since I got my iphone 6 plus, I have been missing my Google Now that my old note 3 had. Siri needs a major update badly, its sad how Apple just let it go down hill like that.

Except that hasn't happened. Nintendo's handheld market isn't destroyed by any stretch of the imagination.

The Nintendo DS sold 154 million units between 2005-2010. The DS2 and DS3D combined have sold 43million between 2010-2013. Even taking into account the slight differences in reporting periods, I'd say there's a fairly unhealthy decline.

Nintendo also announced just this month, that they've partnered up with a Japanese company to develop games for Smart Devices.

There is a HUGE difference between "destroyed" and "not selling in obnoxiously high numbers". :|

I already use the Mad Catz C.T.R.L. i bluetooth controller to play "controller enabled" games through mirroring of my iPhone and iPad to my big screen TV when I don't want to use the smaller screens of the iOS devices. Mad Catz build quality on the controller and button arrangement is like using an Xbox controller. It's that good, it's solid. The graphics on my big screen look pretty amazing too. I was surprised how well it did look.

I would love to have 64 Console SuperMario Land for the iOS. That 3D world game when it launched was way ahead of it's time.
