Cannot be submerged in water?
You mean, you cannot listen to the music while diving? Wow, I am so shocked and disappointed.
This is, by the way, a sarcasm (for those, who didn’t get it)

With my iPhone, iPad and HomePod already listening for Hey Siri... this is going to cause a bit of a mess, me thinks lol.

It should easily be programed to answer on AirPods when it detects them in your air, and any other device would just stay silent. As for the other people with iOS devices around you..... that's a different story :)

Also: apparently most of you are unaware that the HomePod introduced technology that has all paired devices “converse” about which one is going to answer a “hey Siri” command. I expect to see that refined in future software updates, but HomePod owners are enjoying it already.

I’d prefer them to nail the acoustics over adding more features. A lower noise floor would be nice, but I understand that’s a symptom of the Bluetooth audio protocol. If they could create a Bluetooth 5 version with a better protocol, we might get nicer sounding AirPods. Better sound quality would be only reason I’d upgrade.

Well, you can put Siri anywhere, but the bottleneck will always be its AI. So, I don't see a real benefit. Worse of all problems, any language other than the English one is mostly unusable in terms of asking for movie, song or singer/actor name.

Sounds interesting. I’d bet on 12/31/18 to see the coming soon placeholder going up (if this is true).

To be fair, a pair of proper waterproof AirPods would be awesome. I'd get some of those over hear holders for them and wear them while swimming. The AirPods are the best earphones I've ever owned, though not good enough that I'd buy a new pair every time they do an iterative update.

How about a way to prioritise what device answers. Currently my watch answers and phone answers at the same time. I wanna buy a HomePod but will just add confusion on which Siri Im talking to.
The HomePod takes priority every time I use. The iPhone lights up but does nothing once the HomePod takes over.

The current AirPods sound surprisingly good when you attach some silicone tips like the Earskinz. Without them, the AirPods lose so much sound information - especially bass. Of course, the AirPods can’t be charged with them on, so it’s a fiddle taking them on and off.

I’d love for a new version of the AirPods to come with changeable tips like the old Apple in-ears so that sound is similarly improved and so that they give some level of noise isolation. At the moment, the AirPods are poor for listening in even slightly noisy environments.

Hey Siri functionality would be nice, but what’s most important for me is the sound quality, and so many people are missing out on what the AirPods can actually achieve - to an extent I think many would be surprised at.

I think my biggest wanted feature would be auto-switching between devices rather than having to go into Control Centre each time I jump from my iPhone to my iPad. It's admittedly a minor annoyance but it would be a big time saver for me.
That is actually a pretty complex problem to solve. I think it would be nice if they prompted with a notification asking if you want to swap when they detect it.

Say you are listening to music on iPhone and pick up an iPad, and start playing a game. Should they auto switch? Or the other way, listening to music on iPad and you put it down and walk out the front door. Should it just “hand off” to Apple Music on your iPhone? Or your Apple Watch? If I’m connected to my mac and I pick up a phone call on my iPhone, should they swap to it? What if that call was junk and I hang up 10 seconds later, do they swap back?

There are just a limitless amount of situations where the devices can’t know what you want to do, so they would ultimately just be guessing.

For now, I’d be fine with them just adding a persistent headphone indicator to the status bar on the X.

Adding Bluetooth 5 would be a nice.

Right now I'm a happy BeoPlay H5 user. What is stopping me to switch to AirPods is the absence of a silicone (or something similar) material to fit the earbuds more securely in the ears.

A lot of users are enthusiastic saying that they are not dropping off. I'm still worried, though. Maybe I'm accustomed wearing traditional silicon equipped earbuds.

Water resistance is a welcome development -- should have been part of the initial release IMHO. For everyone saying AirPods are sweat resistant, Apple does not make any claims about that. Officially, they are not certified as sweat resistant. I've been though many pairs of AirPods which Apple replaced on warranty. There is no (easy) way for Apple to determine if AirPods are water damaged so they just replace them. I'm more than 50/50 that my Pods were ruined because of my sweat.

Hey Siri is unnecessary. It's easy enough to double tap. Ironically, you still can't officially "Hey Siri" on a Mac or control HomeKit on a Mac w/ Siri.

Rather than Hey Siri, what AirPods really need is more tap commands. The reality is, when I'm running it's more comfortable to tap than have to "Hey Siri." Normally I love "Hey Siri," but not in this application. Also when in pubic I'd rather be more discrete and tapping accomplishes that better than "Hey Siri." I also wonder about battery drain. I mean isn't that why the A8 devices have to be plugged in for "hey Siri" to work?

Would also love to see AirPods be available in black or gray. Inductive charging is a given since Apple had an AirPod case on the demo AirPower.

Woah, Handsfree Hey Siri command! That's about as useful as the ability to remote-tap Helen Keller on the shoulder.
I think Siri may have been modeled on Floris in Being John Malkovich.
- Floris! Get Guinness on the phone!
- Yes sir, Gengis Khan Capone. Fine.
Anyway, couldn't care less about this functionality. It's about 900 times more important that we get them in black, space grey or anything else that doesn't make you look like you've got melted ice cream dripping from your ears.

I’m skeptical of this report for a couple of reasons:

1. The AirPods are already resistant to water, ie sweat, which is roughly equivalent to “a splash of rain or water.” Does anyone here seriously believe that every time the AirPods get wet you have to replace them? Lol, no.

2. While I could certainly see Apple producing a new and substantially improved AirPod in a couple of years, Apple does not tend to “burn” early adopters so much these days. I suspect it will get updated about as often as the Apple Watch or the Apple TV, for precisely the same reasons: they’ve made such a substantial change that new hardware is required.

Wrong on both accounts. Unlike the Apple Watch 2 and 3, AirPods are not certified as water resistance. Also, yes, I've had to replace a few pairs of AirPods because, I believe, sweat devoured them over the period of a few months. Either that or I have terrible luck with AirPods conking out on me ever few months. Same issue every time -- one or both buds stop working completely.

As to your #2, AirPods are over a year old. Yes, Apple has a history of replacing products every 12-18 months. New AirPods are due, and, in fact, Apple showed AirPods sitting on its AirPower charger. Current AirPods can only be charged via wire.

Now that I've just bought mine?! Bad timing. Wondering whether I should get the :apple: Watch Series 3 or wait to see if a Series 4 is released later this year. Anyway, all of that seem to be minor "improvements", almost irrelevant (Siri is limited per se and even more limited in non-English speaking countries). All they want is people to splurge continuously on them.

Black or gray AirPods would be too easily lost. They make them in white because you can spot them in purses and couch cushions more easily. If they issue them in dark colors, customer satisfaction numbers would take too much of a hit.
