This better not happen, I'm to poor to purchase at full price

It sounds like you mention that it's only resellers? Does that mean the online store will still offer the edu discount :)

Yeah Heaven forbid a college student have to pay full price

Ive been hearing this rumour time and time again. My apple store in Sydney reaffirms this rumour. It appears that as of March 31st Apple will discontinue both EDUCATIONAL and STAFF discounts.

Is this rumour valid? and to what extent? Is it only the case with the resellers themselves or does it extend to the online apple website?

with the govenator in cali it looks like there won't be any schools left so an apple edu discount won't matter ;)...but arnold will still balance the budget

I really don't see this happening.

And if it even is RUMORED to happen in the US, I'm going to go ballistic.

I'm about 3 weeks from getting my Uni acceptance letter, so I can finally get my friggin' Edu discount on Apple Care for my PowerBook. (I got a letter from UH today saying that they'd tell me in about 3 weeks. If I don't get into UH, I'm switching to Dell.)

back in my college/high school days, the edu discount was 40% percent off of retail, so today's edu discount is nothing at all

the main thing if you decide for college, is to do it with any computer with any operating system and for most majors, you will only need office, the internet, email, and maybe cs suite

Here is the latest information i have gathered.

APRIL 28th.
EDU discounts no longer available except through the online store. Resellers will not be able to provide this service.

I still havent validated the information regarding the discontinuation of STAFF discounts.

I don't think anybody believes you. I know I don't. Couldn't you think of something better to make up rumors about? iBooks next tuesday or something?

Why would he lie about it? Here's an item from last October citing April 28th as the date, so this rumor has been around for quite a while. That other thread he linked also seems to have multiple people saying they've heard the same thing from resellers.

I'm all fine with it, as long as the online store will still provide the discount
Very true. It's difficult even now at my Apple Store to get someone to let you use the edu discount, most people don't know about it either which i guess is what Apple would want but... That's why i buy my stuff online. Even my iPod, that way they don't complain to me about putting on the discount in-store..

Replace educational discount with what? Doesnt seem logical, especially since targetting the educational market seems the best approach.

I find this rumor to be ludacris, at least in the US. By discontinuing their EDU discount, they would further be alienating potential new customers as well as old ones. They're already pricey to begin with, why make it worse for Johnny Frosh when mom and dad go to buy a computer for his first year of college?

Plus what about the massive state contracts they have with departments of education (in Maine, for example)?

I think these Rumors are just that..

I seem to remember from somewhere that, in the UK at least, the Edu. Discount was given by Apple and then claimed back through tax breaks and therefore doesn't cost Apple anything and brings in more sales.

Could it be that the tax breaks are similar in other countries and that these tax breaks are being changed not by Apple but by the State?

I think there could be merit to the rumour but it might just be a re-organisation of how the discounts are given.

In all fairness, now I could believe what he just said.

However, he did say that Apple was going to discontinue educational discounts, which is just wrong, and shows how misinformed he is, and now he says only resellers are going to discontinue offering discounts, which is possible since Apple has a rep for being tough on resellers.

So yeah, now I can believe him, but that other crap he was talking about was clearly wrong. And those reliable "sources" probably just read rumours here and are as reliable as you or I. May as well guess at what might happen.

=)
Im not looking for a little attention by spamming the mac rumour forum lol.
Not at all.

Being a student at Sydney Uni i was very curious as to finding out the validity of this rumour seeing as i plan to buy a nice little ibook.
Intel if possible =)

While i heard it might happen overseas... i believe these changes will occur in Australia only. So all you US folk shouldnt be worried.

My wife and I have both bought from Apple in the last couple of years using Education discount.

I find it strange that neither of us had to provide proof that we were students, we merely told them which college we attended.

The discount I received (~£150) was greater than the total cost of my college course (~£120) !!

Like I said if Apple can make that saving in the tax return then there's no point in losing the sale if the UK tax-payer is willing to offer these discounts. Maybe they've been asked by HMR&C to provide proof in future and they've decided the paperwork is too much hassle.

It does not matter the country, Apple EDU discounts are set by Apple Computer in California. I find it difficult to believe that official Apple Stores can take away company mandated discounts.

People seem to be losing sight of the fact that this change is only occurring in Australia. Yes, it could eventually be extended to other countries, but for now it appears to just be Australia. And you'll still be able to get the EDU discount through Apple. The sky is not falling...yet.
