Good to know about the change. Has no impact on customers. Nice to see Apple's environmental efforts. But surprised to see that it was not enabled on demo devices.
For all the cynicals out there: while individual energy savings per user may be minimal, the cumulative environmental impact can be significant when adopted across millions of devices.
So I applaud these efforts.
I'm inclined to believe it's a step in the right direction, but compared to what else Apple could do? What would the impact of everyone say keeping there phones a month longer be? Of course, there are hundreds of such comparisons.
Something I'm curious about, are the in store demo devices programmed to turn their screens off during the hours the stores are closed? Or are they powered off entirely?
You say "contiguous" United States. Does that mean Alaska and Hawai'i are excluded? What is the primary sound of electricity generation in those states? Alaska would be Hydro, so already green.
