If you stick your finger into a spinning fan, you:

a) Deserve whatever injury you get
b) Are going to do more damage to the fan than your finger

why do I have a feeling this will push the new mac pro back even further to meet these new standards...
when will apple release Final Cut XI for iPad?

You could put your finger in a computer fan until the end of time and you would not 'lose your finger'. They can spin up to ~3200 rpm's, have little torque, they're not sharp and have very little mass. This is a dumb regulation protecting nobody.

Maybe current generation of fans made to be quiet. In my time building PCs, I've had plenty of fans especially on the CPU that I would not put my finger in. Not only were they ultra loud, I knew there was a can of whoopass if I put my finger in there.

It looks like it is some electrical safety standard. Mac Pro isn't a volume seller, but it still looks odd that they can't or don't want to get it up to standard.

Or, they became aware of it at some point last year, and started the Mac Pro redesign process at that point. That could explain the non-update it got last year, and if they want to do something more than just the bare minimum, it could be taking longer than the available time (between the passing of the new regulation, and when it becomes active) to finish the redesign, get parts in production, and get all of the *other* regulatory paperwork taken care of.

Just a thought.

I too consider myself a pro user. I too would buy a new Mac Pro the day it comes out. And I live in Europe.
One thing that is of enormous importance to me, is how my desktop perfectly fits into my personal Apple ecosystem. If I am on the road, put a meeting in the iPad or iPhone calendar, it automatically turns up on the desktop. On the road, I have access to all my contacts. That, more than the rest, was my main trigger to buy an iPhone, back then.
All contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and what more are in sync. If my desktop would break that ecosystem, the rest of the Apple products will lose a very important advantage over the competition.

I gave up on waiting and just went 2012 27" imac maxed out for now. I do miss the extra cores, but not really that big of a deal. Logic and Photoshop seem to run about the same or better.

This thread is little more than a lot of uninformed folks taking the opportunity to Apple bash. There is some logic here and there however.

I sincerely hope that Apple never bows down to the EU and their ridiculousness. If it were up to them we would all have to wear a helmet during a bowel movement.

The machine was safe yesterday and it's safe today. If Apple did retool the design to comply, people would find a way to complain about that too.

You can keep some of the people happy, some of the time.

Instead of always assuming the worst, why not assume that this announcement is an indicator that Apple WILL be releasing a revised Mac Pro.

There is one reason and one reason only that there's no new Mac Pro yet. Intel has yet to bake Thunderbolt into their Xeon chipsets. The enterprise roadmaps just don't move at that quick a pace. They never have.

Keep faith, it will happen.

How can it be the most profitable computer company on earth isn't capable of updating its Pro line every 12-18 months when other barely profitable companies update their desktop lines every year or so?

I think you answered your own question: companies that update their desktop lines every 12-18 months are barely profitable, whereas the company that doesn't update its pro line every 12-18 month is the most profitable company on earth. :D

With Steve Jobs gone, more than a few people wonder if Apple still has a well thought-out strategy. The most recent Mac Pro 'refresh' controversy only served to reinforce that concern with those who are the MP target market.

It is just as likely that it was Steve Jobs who killed, or at very least mothballed, the Mac Pro ( back in 2010-2011 ). Jobs openly admitted that his job was far more to say "No" than "Yes" to products.

That they didn't even think to restart it until after he was gone for several months, would put the Mac Pro precisely onto the track of being delayed into 2013.

RIP, Mac Pro.:(

Not necessarily.

If this was an end to the mac pro altogether then there would have been job cuts at Apple's assembly plant in Fermoy, Cork, Ireland.

We have not heard of any job losses from there, so hopefully it means that they are working on a 'new' mac pro that complies with the regulations.

The mac pro was in need of a refresh and re-design reboot. Hopefully this is the start of that.

Mac Pro c'est mort, Vive le Mac Pro.

Well I can see that stock price falling even further!!!!!....

What a complete embarrassment for Apple, it's not like regulations suddenly appear one week, they will have either been advised of the changes, or as a major PC manufacturer and seller in Europe expected to, like everyone else, keep up to date and comply with the regulations months and months ago.

As Apple has basically not bothered, if it doesn't have a new Mac Pro on the market that does fully comply with regulations when they come into effect, then it will loose a market of several large population countries to it's computer!

In my opinion your not a very professional company if you have billions, employ thousands, but can't even design your products to comply with EU regulation!
It's like Pagani I think it was, they couldn't sell their new supercar in America because it's airbags didn't meet the stupid US regulation, but even this tiny tiny tiny company went and spent about 2 million developing the airbags to meet those regulations just so the car could be sold in the US. A tiny company that employs a few hundred if that is more capable then Apple!

Uninformed folks? You can add an original member of the Mac 1984 team to the 'folks' then:

Following outcry from the Mac world, and a complaint from Andy Hertzfield (a member of the original Apple Macintosh development team), Apple has removed the ‘New’ icon beside the Mac Pro on its Apple Store webpage and confirmed that a new Mac Pro is in the works, with a new model expected next year.

Writing on his Google+ page, Hertzfield expresses his “deep disappointment” at Apple’s “meagre, lame update” to the Mac Pro.

It's funny how some people defend Apple blindly. Let's all enjoy our iToys and defend Apple no matter what: "MacPros don't matter", "it's only 1% of the Mac line".

Funny when the 1% are needed to create content or apps for the 99% of consumers and iToy buyers.

For a computer that apple thinks doesn't have a big following there sure are a lot of replies to this article in a very short time frame.

As far as I am concerned apple cut its teeth on the pro line of systems. Its the pro community that kept apple afloat in the dark days and now apple turns its back on us.

All the itoys are fun but thats all they are. The iMac is just an overpowered laptop, Oh I'm sorry I almost forgot it is ultra thin, Thats exactly what I need to get my job done. We need a real computer and hence the Mac Pro.

For every one Mac Pro sold apple needs to sell 10-15 itoys, to make the same money.

Theres always enough room for jello. And there is definitely room in the mac line up for the Mac Pro. I don't know what the debate is?

People need to stop concerning them self's with apple profits, and be more concerned about what products they need.

We have waited long enough and patiently enough apple please give us our new Mac Pro.

Sorry about the rant.

and you should be sorry.

iToys are fun, and "THAT'S ALL THEY ARE..."

you really have no idea do you.

Look at the figures here

even assuming these figures may not be entirely accurate ( I can't say for sure)

They claim:-

The iPhone generates more profit than GE, for example (all of GE). It generates more profit than Microsoft. It generates more profit than Google and Walmart. It generates almost as much profit as Exxon-Mobil!

If even approximately true, it rather makes your comment look like the nonsense it clearly is.

If you have a product that sells in those sort of quantities, and generates that amount of profit, as has been said in these forums many a time...

"Glad you aren't in charge of Apple"

If you had your way, Apple would now be the size of Dell, or even smaller.

Sorry, I would love a nice new MacPro, but I'd rather we had a strong Apple, than no Apple at all, which is probably what we'd have if you had your way.

The Mac Pro is a niche product that Apple recommends to a few of their customers, not their flagship product. The iMac is the desktop that they recommend to all of their customers, it's their flagship desktop.
That's what a flagship product is, the top niche, not the top seller. In most people's minds.

At issue are the large fans within the Mac Pro. Since they are unprotected, it would be possible to touch the fan blades.

In other news, jumping in front a car can cause injury. Maybe we should put 8' fences along the sides of all roads?

This is exactly the kind of thing that is pushing more and more Britons to want out of the EU nanny state. The only access to the fans is when the door is open, when you should have the computer off anyway. Should we put more guards on desk fans so when you open them to clean them, you cant cut your fingers? >.> What a total load of tripe.
