It seems more like it's going to be a 13" MacBook OR updated MacBook Air, only time will tell. There have been a few reports on this now not only the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo but also (the less reliable) Digitimes but also Mark Gurman and now Rhoda Alexander, something is happening just not sure if it's simply an updated Air or a new 13" MacBook version.

Not sure if this is any indication of which model is being updated but looks like they're clearing out MacBook Air stock. Bestbuy has it on sale for $699!

Yes, but they over the last few years they've always broadcast all press events, AND always mention any event in a press release (that also appears on the newsroom page on Apple.com).

So why haven't they done that now?

None of these have anything about 27 Mar event:
homepage: https://www.apple.com
events: https://www.apple.com/apple-events
newsroom https://www.apple.com/newsroom
edu: https://www.apple.com/education
...

EDIT:
Macworld UK says this:

So it's actually more than one event (unconfirmed all locations?). Making video unlikely, unless they satellite into one centralised location...?

Dates, times, venue(s) and other details
Apple has announced an event in the US at 10am Chicago time on 27 March. (We understand that there will be a corresponding event in the UK on the same date, but other than that we don't know the details.)

The US event will be at Lane Tech College Prep high school, Chicago. It's obviously unusual to have an announcement in a school rather than a conference centre or Apple Park, but that reflects the subject matter: Apple has made it abundantly clear that this will be an education-focused announcement.

(As 9to5Mac observes, this makes Chicago an apt choice. Apple is rolling out an educational program called Everyone Can Code to students in the city.)

Less than a week until the event folks! :)

As for Google eating Apple's lunch in education, from everything that I've read, it's not just about cheap Chromebooks. Google has a fully mature platform for education from the top to the bottom, and one that is easier to manage. Cheap Chromebooks are great, but the fact of the matter is the platform as a whole has been superior to what Apple has been offering, and they have free cloud storage for decentralized user data too. Very flexible. Apple has only recently been playing catchup, including with multi-user logins and improved management tools. MS is also trying to win back some edu customers with improvement management tools, but like Apple, they're playing catchup to Google here.

Four or five years ago, Apple was roughly half of primary and secondary school education. HALF! As of last year Google was about 60%, and Apple was less than 20%. Ouch.

I work in a Pre-K - 8th grade school district that used to be predominantly Apple. This year, we went 1:1 (as in each student gets their own device) where 2-5 grades got iPads, 6-8th got Chromebooks. We also use Google's G Suite (email, calendar, Drive, etc.) for the entire district. I find Apple doesn't have anything that really compares with Google Classroom. There's iTunes U, but that's not as easy to use as Google Classroom.

Nah.

2017's March (introduction of fifth-generation iPad, etc.) didn't have a press event at all.

2016's March had a press event, but no advance notice on Apple.com nor a live stream. Same for 2015's.

Last years didn't have a press event/live stream your right BUT there was a live stream for 2016, the event had the tagline "Let us Loop you in" and the 2015 event was live streamed, the invitation had the tagline "Spring forward"

It can sometimes be an indication but also it can just be places doing their own discounts. We have been hearing rumours that Apple are going to announce a new cheaper MacBook Air, so it's possible that places are trying to clear old stock.

I believe that Chicago School District will be in Spring Break during the week of the keynote. Which means that Apple will have enough time to make that school a “lab” for whatever they want to show (Friday to Tuesday)
If the event will feature an integrated and affordable solution for schools, teachers and students might come back from the break to a high-tech school made by Apple itself.

I think there might not be one. Normally Apple will post it on their front page, now there isn't even a event listed here

https://www.apple.com/apple-events/

It might really be a small one hour event. But still, I wish they do it so Apple Fans could watch.

They might post on there closer to the time, lets not forget the event is just under a week away.

If by Friday or Saturday, there is no change to the Apple Events page or anything announcing a livestream.....we know there isn't going to be one...

Most likely the case as this event is pretty abnormal in that it is being held at a high school and not at SJ Theater or Town Hall (in the past, now defunct).

If there are no products bring announced and it’s simply a keynote being delivered to the education audience then I wouldn’t expect a line stream as there really isn’t much point since it’s not aimed at the average consumer.

Any chance that new AirPods will be released? I think I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on a new pair of headphones. I want the AirPods but will be very disappointed if a new model is right around the corner.

Will this be streamed?

Who knows? Usually we get a link from Apple to the exact page where the live stream will take place. This time around there is nothing of that sort.

Also to add to the possibility that this event won't be live streamed is that the event is taking place at a high school in Chicago, where the auditorium might not have the facilities to live stream the event.

I just went onto my Apple TV and there is a picture at the top with the picture of the Apple invite for this event and it takes you to the Apple Events app, i just downloaded it.

Thanks so much for linking me this video. I truly appreciate you taking the time to do that.

Unfortunately the only insight I got was "may come as early as this year." lol that's ok. I'm going to see if they're discussed next week at the event and if not I'll just got ahead and get the current model.

Bloomberg states next week will bring cheaper iPads, but no new Mac laptop yet

In Chicago, the world’s most-valuable technology company plans to show off a new version of its cheapest iPad that should appeal to the education market, said people familiar with the matter. The company will also showcase new software for the classroom, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private plans. Apple declined to comment.

A new, cheaper MacBook laptop is in the works and likely destined to replace the MacBook Air at a price less than $1,000, but it probably won’t be ready in time for next week, the people said. The MacBook Air, introduced about a decade ago, hasn’t seen a major change since 2010, the same year the iPad came out. Although the laptop is popular with college students, it has languished as Apple focuses on more expensive Macs.

I personally would be surprised to see new AirPods announced next week at the event. Probably not the right venue.

It is quite sad how Apple have let their computers fall in to chaos. A Mac "Pro" that has 5 year old internals. A Macbook "Air" which isn't their lightest laptop. Macbook "Pro" which many people don't think is up to professional use due to the keyboard (even though mine is fine, lots of people seem spooked by it.) It's really not rocket science, they need three levels of laptop - cheap, mid range, and professional.
Apple => education service of mouth only
The sector doesn’t meet Tim’s core (financial) prerequisites and got completely Chromified
