Flat tire?

More like... a custom steering wheel !

;)

No he's not. It looks awful, and it is designed poorly. The engineering just isn't there. Apples will likely have electronics and potentially battery built into the band itself, allowing the device to be far thinner, sleeker, and it won't be round, I highly doubt.

Just because you see some people saying it looks good, means absolutely nothing. Maybe the people that think it looks bad...didn't post? By the way, I admit it is currently the best looking smartwatch, I'm just saying that's sad, because it looks awful, and I know that Apple's will destroy it, not because I think Apple does no wrong, but because they make unbelievable looking hardware.

Compared to current smart watches it looks very good.

That "stupid flat-tire display shape" happens to look real good. I like watches, and I like to wear watches. The ones I own are round. It simply looks better.

He's referring to the black bar across the bottom. It's not part of the display and always remains black.

So: the watch is round, but the display is not, not entirely.

Okay, I understand it's called MacRumors, but this just goes to show that we could use a liiiitle bit more work on which stories are more likely to be substantial.

It also requires the ability to communicate clearly.
Communication heavily depends on the intellect of the receiver. There is no way for the sender to communicate clearly enough to ensure that no idiot can misunderstand him. By your definition, no one can be a journalist.

„The only way this could get funnier would be if it doesn't even ship until after Apple announces their wrist wearable thing (next month).“

• the only way = a strange exception from the norm
• could = a possibility the opposite of a guarantee
• would = another possibility on top of it
• if = a precondition for all the possibilities to become true
• even = another strange exception from all likelihood

I don't get how anyone could read this as a fact : „The iWatch is coming next month.“

Gruber speaks about ways this flat tire design could get funnier. The communication fail (clearly) isn't on his side.

He linked to this image and talked about, how the disconnected load level circle is drawing more attention to the flat tire. Here black means not fully loaded and the flat tire section of the display always stays black. This design fail can't get any funnier, according to Gruber. Unless Motorola doesn't even manage to ship its vaporware before Apples rumorware.

yeah, i see the intent.

i still don't get it. it's like the mac pro "trash can" thing. it's a stretch, and won't really catch on. it just doesn't evoke "flat tire" upon first impression, but only after being "shown" the resemblance. memes really have to be spontaneous and a product of shared consciousness that everyone "gets".

this one is just trying too hard.

I agree. I do like to see what Gruber posts, and he's usually pretty good, but it feels like he's trying to be as harsh as possible toward this watch.

Easily. All the coulds and woulds and ifs that you pointed out, were about the Moto 360 coming out. The part about Apple had no such conditionals.

Now that's a good point. Using a partial circle around the outside was not the best idea on the planet.

If it looks like that...that will be the beginning of end for Apple.

----------

If you think about it, if they had done the same with the first iPhone, it would have had a keyboard / buttons etc.... I think the design will be something new from what we have seen, ie not round....

Yes that's my point. The Moto Almost 360 is equivalent to Apple's gen 1 iPhone having a physical keyboard. There's a reason mechanical watches are round. No one has yet given a good reason for smart watches being round other than watches have had a round face since forever. IF Apple announces a watch with a round face I guarantee you there will be no black bar. If it's not technically possible then the watch won't have a round display. Simple as that.

Yeah I can't believe people don't get what flat tie means. Gruber's not talking about the round metal hardware he's talking about the display which with that black bar at the bottom looks like a flat tire.

Everyone is drooling over digital press shots of this device. But when you see actual photos of it on someone's wrist it looks really big and bulky. And the black bar sticks out like a sore thumb.

Can someone please tell me the story of how this gentleman came to be the known as the "Apple Journalist"? Is he some old school industry insider with a relation to Apple?
Also, is this the one that confirms rumours one day before they happen with a "yup" and gets information directly from Apple?

Anyway, "stupid flat tyre" doesn't sound that mature or eloquent. Surely there would be better candidates for the job of "Apple Journalist".

Honestly it looks so awful if you have good taste. Look at the band and how it attaches to the device, hahaha that looks so bad it's hard to describe. If people settle for that, good for them though. When Apple saw that, specifically Jony and his design team, they probably laughed until they cried, but at the same time, were so proud of their design because it makes that look so terrible. At the same time that's happening, Apple, and specifically the software design team were laughing at the Andriod Wear, and how embarrassingly bad it is. Clock offset in upper left corner? So bad, so terribly bad.

Everyone though, had to laugh when Google showed off the ordering of the pizza on it. Honestly, I think of that and am so embarrassed for Google... It's like they have no smart people, but I guess that just goes to show that humans can come up with some truly terrible ideas.

The big secret is that it is going to be the iCuckoo, it will hang from your ears, and not be strapped to your wrist for obvious reasons.

So essentially no one in America is a journalist, because all of the news is absolutely terrible, definitely largely biased, and also definitely biased to the end of making money. For example they will all make a huge deal of the Ebola outbreak and deliberately scare people, thus they watch more, thus they earn more revenue. That's how it goes, especially in the US, everything is about doing anything to screw anyone else, as long as you make money.

So essentially, no. Granted between the net and TV, expectations for journalism have plummeted to near zero, but that does not mean that nobody still practices journalism, nor does it change the definition of it. True journalists are just harder to find amid the noise now. I don't blame them, I blame an audience that for the most part expects nothing, and takes it.

Good joke. :D
The answer is #42.

An answer to a question maybe, but not one I asked.

----------

Communication heavily depends on the intellect of the receiver. There is no way for the sender to communicate clearly enough to ensure that no idiot can misunderstand him. By your definition, no one can be a journalist.

Not so. You are simply creating additional conditions that were not part of my point.

You assume the intended audience for his journalism prefers mature or eloquent. These days, the audience for otherwise is probably larger (and more profitable). Smart journalism.

I don't think he makes any claims about his opinions being factual. Design is very subjective, he doesn't like it, and it's kind of stupid too.

Round smartwatch faces are just skeuomorphic design taken to a physical extreme. I think everyone needs to keep in mind that this might not even be a thing, ever, we have no part leaks to go on. Any wearable (not wrist thing, wearable) that Apple designs will be the functional ideal for its intended use, and will not hang on to outdated designs for the sake of tradition.

Easily. All the coulds and woulds and ifs that you pointed out, were about the Moto 360 coming out. The part about Apple had no such conditionals.
There was no part about Apple. Because the part about the wrist wearable thing was itself the conditional for how the Moto 360 couldn't get any funnier.

Case 1: The iWrist goes on sale before the Moto 360.
Than all this premature vaporware marketing will be even more funny.

Case 2: The iWrist goes on sale after the Moto 360.
Than the flat tire design is still very funny, but at least they were first to market.

Gruber never tried to make a point which case might come true next month. He is just expressing his disgust for this kind of attention grabbing for unfinished product, which might not even ship before competition.
Now that's a good point. Using a partial circle around the outside was not the best idea on the planet.
Because this software design failure seems to (purposefully?) highlight the most major hardware shortcomings, in that it draws as much attention as possible to the fact that the display isn't a full circle. Gruber is laughing hard at bad design. So much so that almost nothing could make it any funnier.

An answer to a question maybe, but not one I asked.
You gave a definition of journalism that rather is an ideal than practice. You only described what makes a good journalist, but not what makes any journalist. Most journalists won't be considered journalists under your strict rules, because you mixed up profession with professionalism. You are a journalist, when you are paid for being a journalist. Period. Nothing more.

Guber makes money with his blog and podcast. He's not just a hobby journalist like we are. Being a journalist is his main activity during the day and his main source of income. He is as real a journalist as it gets. And he is also a good journalist with high standards. That's why he is reporting so much about Apple and not about lesser companies with worse designs.

He is not a journalist. He does not report news. He is a well connected dude with a blog. Who is also a bit full of himself. Everything he writes is his opinion. He is not objective, reporting facts. Everything is commentary. There is nothing wrong with this, but he is not a journalist.

He is not the Yup dude. That dude is an actual journalist.

There are far worse Apple journalists than he, and far worse tech journalists period in the biz.

He does report on facts constantly, unless you haven't been reading him for very long. Market share, sales of different companies' phones, etc.

For pure facts though, nothing beats Asymco.

Nah, the one full of himself is Mark Gurman who has now taken to doing "nope's" and "yep's" on Twitter, knowing full well those are trademarks of Jim Dalrymple. He was also the one who claimed Apple redesigned their Health app (to something worse according to his "sources") because of screen shots 9to5Mac leaked. So he really believes Apple software guys are so petty that they'd re-design an app (an app that got all of 3 minutes on stage at WWDC) just to spite him and 9to5Mac.

Ben Bajarin and Benedict Evans are also very good, though the constant market share analysis by all these talking heads gets tiring. As does the amount of ink spilled about why Apple should/how Apple could do a cheap smartphone.

I actually quit reading Gruber years ago, so I'll take your word for it on his reporting. I quit reading him once it became clear that he was nothing but an Apple mouthpiece.
