Well it looks like my hopes of Apple removing the 16GB iPad and replacing it with the 32GB and so on are shattered.

Ideally the difference between each memory jump should be $50. So $499, $549, $599, $649 for 128GB. But Apple seems to rely on the huge flash memory margins while keeping the entry price lower.

Correct. I think the iPad mini taught Apple how much people care about weight and size. For many, it's more important than pixel density, especially after decades of computer monitors at much lower quality than the iPad mini. Someday when Apple can make an iPad that weighs as much as today's mini and a mini that weighs as much as today's iPhone it'll be interesting to see how sales trend. I still think the mini will win even if it still trails in the display department. The iPad might be over-serving the market.

I feel like the full sized iPad is a lot like 17" laptops. Useful to some but not a super-popular item long-term. It's only been popular so far because it was the only iPad.

Hardly useless, for everybody outside the us it brought 4g and a good bump in processor speed. Those two things alone made it a significant update.

The real reason for the iPad 4 was to get Lightning across the whole line. The A6X was just ready early, so they said "WTF, let's add it to the iPad now. And the mini can't have a better camera than to full size, so let's upgrade that too." You know that's how it went.

that'll neverrrr happen.

mainly because people will buy the iPad regardless of price. I don't know if they chose that pricing scheme if it would entice THAT much more customers.

So the 128gb isn't replacing the 64gb, pricewise? Well that's not just cricket.

Precisely. I have a 16GB iPad 3 and I am totally happy with it.
Do you only keep txt files on your device?

Nobody can come at me with the 'apple has always been overpriced' rubbish. Until now the iPad delivered a great value for the money. Guess why it isn't the case anymore. Apple does not use 2000 HDD's in the Macs anymore if they would everyone would laugh at it and thats the same thing which starts to happen to the iPads.

And your evidence of this is . . .

Like adding 128gb model, they could just have easily added lightning without any changes. If there is going to be a March release, they would have saved A6X for that.

I don't know. $929 is pretty steep for an iPad unless - without a doubt - you're going to use it a lot and in lieu of any other device.

Especially since you can get an entry level MacBook Air for $999

No kidding...Now that I have an older MacBook Pro, an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3 I don't see the need to upgrade for quite sometime. A price-point just short of a grand is ridiculous...but people will buy it, so good for Apple I guess...

People don't buy iPads regardless of price. They are not even saving a lot money from this price strategy.
Increasing the storage would cost apple a few $ and increase popularity much more.

It would have made more sense to announce and introduce this with the next iPad...

It would have made more sense for them to have released this with the 4 in Nov. Waiting another 6 months to release an upgrade just so it coincides with a product refresh? That doesn't make any sense.

64GB to 128GB for $100 ... good deal!

32GB to 64GB for $100 ... OK, it's Apple, a bit high, but not unreasonable

16GB to 32GB for $100 ...

Ironic because storage of content is iOS's weakest point atm, in my opinion.

I keep all my personal files in just two places, Dropbox and my MacBook Pro's SSD for big files that don't fit (with Time Machine backups).

If I ever want to put something on the iPad, I either stream it or put it in Dropbox. It's the quickest and easiest way. I'm not going to start using iCloud documents because I will forget where I have what. In Dropbox, everything is in clear sight since it's just 1 place.

Having to organize stuff with just folders is limiting, I really wish they'd let us organize things by labels (like Gmail)...

Well this gives a quick glimpse into the future. iPhone 128gb will be 499$ on contract. And we might actually see a 256gb iPad next fall. 4 different storage sizes may be apples answer to investors bit(hing about margins. Also I would gladly pay up because my time is more valuable to me, I can't spend my precious time deciding what to put on my iOS devices and what to leave off. And to anyone who says why do we need more? The same reason that we have 1tb on our laptops and 3tb on our desktops, that's why!

I wonder how much an individual memory chip costs Apple, considering the massive quantities they order. My guess is a few dollars, with the price between the different capacities being negligible.

Silly rabbit... Apple uses only two-chip solutions for iPad Storage. That means 2x8GB, 2x16GB, or 2x32GB until now. When somebody makes the 2x64GB solution, they will get a few months of asking pretty much whatever they want from Apple and pals that want to sell it. So even though its just one chip, it's worth way more than twice as much money... At least until volume kicks in.

This is just another option of the current device. People please, not everytime apple put a toy in the store it needs to be new and redesign or better! it is just another option this time with more capacity.

BTW
Since cloud services and unlimited data from Sprint I don't have anything physically inside my iPad. my pics are in Picasa, my music in Google Music my files are Google drive, My Movies are in my Pogoplug cloud and everything else is sync thru iCloud.

my 12 gigs are being there enjoy freedom and I don't think I need more space.

BUT... if this means it will be dual bootable and this pro iPad will introduce the Finder Touch then we are talking about innovation and new device. if not, well as I said it is just another option.
