Apple plans to launch its first foldable in the form of a new iPad in 2024, analysts at CCS Insight claim.

According to the report, Apple plans to treat the iPad as a way to widely test foldable technology before adopting it on the iPhone. Ben Wood, CCS Insight's Chief Analyst, said in an interview with CNBC that it "doesn't make sense for Apple to make a foldable iPhone" in the current climate. "We think they will shun that trend and probably dip a toe in the water with a foldable iPad," he added.

Apple is believed to be testing a foldable device with a display around 20-inches in size, according to reliable display analyst Ross Young, who expects the device to hit the market in 2026 or 2027. Foldable devices have slowly grown in popularity in recent years, with companies like Samsung having released multiple foldable devices.

Apple is said to be working with LG to create an ultra-thin cover glass that could be used on the company's future foldable products. The exact form factor of the foldable iPad, including whether it would be a hybrid between an iPhone and an iPad, remains unknown.

I could see the potential if you had an iPhone sized device that could be folded out 2-3 times, to become 3-4 times the size. Instant productivity boost everywhere.

But a large device becoming larger, I don't see the idea in? You might as well just go with a larger device in the first place then. Chances are you will be storing, transporting and using it in the exact same way, removing the idea completely. Could someone enlighten me?

In 2021, it was about Apple folding for 2023...now in 2022 its for 2024..always the 2 years gap...Next year we will hear rumoured that will come in 2025

It will definitely fold 😂. I just cannot see this as a long term trend.
This WILL be a long term trend. You just haven’t seen the technology perfected and that’s why you are not down with it.

The picture on the post should not be the way it folds, though. It should fold on the longer side like a book.

Once someone develops a way to eliminate crease, foldables will fly. My wallet will be ready the day we can put 20+ inch iPad without crease in my backpack.

Let Samsung keep working hard at it.

I do wonder if that's intentional, whereby the lower half displays the keyboard? Effectively not limiting the device to being either fully open or fully closed.

Maybe, and thin too. Don’t forget that.

But I also want my car to get me into space.

it’s not about the tech. It’s about the use-case. There isn’t one. At least not yet.

Backpacks already fit 16” MacBook pros, and they’re beasts. Where besides home would you use an iPad that big? All that expensive and heavy folding machinery just to make something fit in a backpack, something that you’re going to use at home most of the time anyway?

If the device was half as thick as a current iPhone, then folded it would be the thickness of a regular iPhone. And the pro camera could bump on one side, and recess into the other. I'm convinced that a foldable phone should have the screen on the *outside* instead of the inside. When closed they could put a Face ID camera on both sides, so it still has a rear camera without unfolding it and you can pick it up and use either side as the front of the phone. Foldable phones are interesting at the moment, but two years from now we'll have the technology to make it feel like real glass and not break too quickly. Two years is a loooong time to develop a premium foldable phone for the masses.

Before creating a foldable iPhone, Apple plans to enter the foldable market with a foldable iPad in 2024, according to analysts at CCS Insight (via CNBC).
Why not, larger foldable iPad would be easier to make than a foldable iPhone. This could solve the issue of transporting larger iPad Pro than 12.9”.

But it already folds. One time only in its lifetime but folds :D

Edit: as long as there will be this screen distortion in the folding part over the hinge I don’t see a future for it. It’s too fragile to use.

From the point of view of a "novice analyst" :p, it's difficult to see Apple delving into such a niche market as Samsung's foldable screen devices. Apple wouldn't be the first at it, and they don't often seem to get involved in industries in which they aren't the first, or where they can't draw a measurable distinction between their products and the rest of the market.
