Excited for when the technology advances to where I can keep folding my phone down to the size of my thumb!

So this isn’t based on anything. He’s just spitballing. Any one of us could do the same.

This WILL be a long term trend. You just haven’t seen the technology perfected and that’s why you are not down with it.

The picture on the post should not be the way it folds, though. It should fold on the longer side like a book.

Once someone develops a way to eliminate crease, foldables will fly. My wallet will be ready the day we can put 20+ inch iPad without crease in my backpack.

Let Samsung keep working hard at it.
You may be right, but I just don't see it. Once you start unfolding to gain a bigger screen, you start to use the device differently... and need a keyboard (with trackpad or mouse option), and then the awesome fold technology brings ancillary devices to make it more like... a laptop.

Please note: this is just an opinion or take. I am not claiming to understand anything about the market, trends, etc. Just calling it from my very, very limited perspective.

y'all should add a script that replaces the word "analyst" with "dubious speculator"

the only difference between this guy and the folks on this forum is that he gets paid for daydreaming and guessing

A foldable iPad Mini seems to be a great idea. Hopefully, there won’t be comments like, “you're folding it wrong”.
I actually can imagine folding it wrong ending up with two devices for 1 fold. That being said…they will appear soon after the device gets released.

As a Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 owner, I have to ask why a foldable iPad? At 20" size it's basically like a portable monitor and if iPadOS does not do something more at that point the user experience is just a large iPad.

I love the Fold 4 because it's a phone that can double as a small tablet. It has basically made me stop using my iPad because I can do most of what it does on the Fold 4 instead. I would not be able to do what an iPhone does with a foldable iPad.

I'm trying to figure out what are the usecases here. If we assume that the foldable iPad just looks like the concept photo in OP, what are the usecases where the foldability becomes handy? Sure, it fits into a smaller size for transport. Can you bend it half open and have basically a touchscreen laptop? Is that particularly useful over the current keyboard cover iPads?

Apple is testing a foldable iPad display that's around 20-inches in size, according to reliable display analyst Ross Young, who expects the device to hit the market in 2026 or 2027. Foldable devices have grown in popularity over the years, with companies like Samsung having released multiple iterations of foldable devices.

Apple is said to be working with LG to create an ultra-thin cover glass that could be used on the company's foldable products. The exact form factor of a foldable iPad, including whether it would be a hybrid between an iPhone and an iPad, remains unclear.

Who the HECK would want a 20" iPad?

Say thats 16x9 aspect ratio, and you fold in half to an 'irregular' 9:8 ratio. That would still be an unmanageable 13.1" iPad. With either an unprotected screen on both sides when folded, or just inaccessible unless you fold it out to full size.

Or say you do a tri-fold; that could protect two of the screen sections and leave you with a more manageable device screen size with an approximate 5:3 aspect ratio. It would also mean that, at three times the thickness of a current iPad, it is thicker than the current macbook pro 16" by a good margin.

What an idiot. Apple is happy to cannibalize their own products. Also the folding iPhone is inevitable and will most likely be $1,500 or less when it comes out in 2024 or 2025.

Same here... iPad was never in my rotation of devices, and now when unfolded I have small tablet...

I do wonder if that's intentional, whereby the lower half displays the keyboard? Effectively not limiting the device to being either fully open or fully closed.
I agree it would make more sense to fold the other way so it's not the same length when folded. Then you can fit it in smaller bags. If my Z Flip folded the long way, it would still stick out of some pockets.

Sounds fantastic to me. People will be more likely to accept an experimental foldable ipad vs an iPhone. And working on a larger device is often easier at first due to less concern with space constraints.

I’d definitely be interested in such a product.

i don’t want this ! What a pile of ……. Stop whining, it’s not like a foldable iPhone or iPad means they stop sell the normal one. S22 , fold 4, flip it’s a choice FFS
Some can say they don't, but the issue comes when they start telling everyone else what to do

Folding any phone doubles its thickness. That means a substantial pocket bulge when folded, unless the unfolded thickness is halved—which leads to challenging engineering for both components and batteries. Add a higher risk of screen failure to that. I don’t see what problems the resulting device solves. But people are buying them, so I guess I’m wrong.

As for a tablet: I’m similarly unsure of the benefit. As long as a device requires a bag/backpack, what’s the benefit? If the idea is to somehow shrink the footprint of a small (mini) iPad to a pocketable device, I’d say that is a niche market.

All that said, I *would* like a 20” 16:9 iPad, and wouldn’t even need a fold. My compute needs are modest, and it would be a terrific device for consumption.

Who am I? I do not want to have to wear a backpack, with the need to take it off and put it on to access anything. I also would like a nice-sized device to be able to read a newspaper, book or consult a map? Answer: an adult who commutes via public transportation.
