I dont believe the rumor. I just do not think Apple will release a iPad HD or a MacPad Pro (MaxiPad :p ).

I think will see an iPad 3 next year, with the hi-res screen and maybe a improved SoC.

However if Apple does take iPad to the Pro Market, I see them porting Aperture to iOS. This would probably be useful with photographers during photo shoots.

They forgot to mention the USB port.
Can't be considered Pro without a USB port.
;)

This whole thing makes total sense to me given that the iPad is gaining a very strong foothold in the medical industry where high-resolution screens are a definite plus and where premium pricing is the norm.
And the un-Apple-like argument is completely out of the window now that Jobs is handing more and more control over to Cook.

Angry Birds for Retina Display: $1 – 614K pixels
Angry Birds "HD" for iPad 2 Display: $5 – 787K pixels

The exact same game, for 5 times the cost of the iPhone version, you get 1.28 times more detail.

To make things worse, Apple has intentionally crippled Retina apps when running on the iPad, so that the software you've already purchased for your iPhone 4 only runs with 480x320 detail (yes, even when you zoom it to "2x").

Angry Birds (non-HD) running on iPad 2: $1 - 153K pixels

So, you're already forced to make a separate purchase for your iPad to play what is essentially the iPhone 4 application with 28% more pixels.

You're complaining about $6 total purchase cost on a $700 iPad and $600 iPhone?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

3.5" screen has fallen out of favor with this guy who buys the friggin products.

How about a 4.3" screen!

Whoa...are you sure? That's messed up...hmm...is there a software or hardware issue?

Umm...one is 960x640, the other is 1024x768...

Seems like you should be able to just run the 3.5" version with a little border around it without issue, right? I mean no scaling involved? I don't see why they could do that...

Why the iPad HD only at the high-end?

Low-yield of the HD screens? Too pricey? Performance at that resolution too poor for games, but good enough for photo display?

I imagine all of those. (Low Yield of Retina panel = more expense)

I also suspect it will have to use the SGX543 Quad Core (as opposed to the dual core in the ipad 2) in order to give it extra oomph to drive that resolution of a display. As a co-incidence this is the same SGX543 Quad Core chip that will ship with the Sony PS-Vita around the same time frame.

It sounds awesome... can't wait for the iPad3 with HD screen and A6 processor. :p

Personally, I want the HD screen, but I really hope they up the backside camera as well. Bet they'll release the iPad 2 with HD as the higher priced models while the $499 intro will remain low-res for the next generation. Then they'll all go HD.

iPads will eventually be used by Pros. Does anyone disagree? I'm talking about the future.

What if Apple does this? An iPad that slides into a 27" multitouch display with pressure sensitivity that folds down flat in front of you for ease of use. ...

The future is coming on. I'd say another 2 or 3 years and the iPad will be all that 97% of the market needs in a home computer and portable. The rest will be high-powered gamers, renderers, video pros, etc.

Your idea about sliding in a pad is ludicrous, though. I know the drawings circulated, but it's a 100% waste of use. What would be best is hooking in an iPad to a main system and using the iPad as a second monitor for palettes or touch control of the main screen. And more, no doubt. The iPad could become an excellent addition to a desktop with major storage and power while adding to the function of the desktop, instead of being some stashed, hidden appendix.

They don't do retina upgrade to the iPhone software on the ipad. Ironically a cydia application called 'RetinaPad' allows iphone games and software to run in retina resolution on the iPad.

However when you compare an app like Real Racing 2 for the iphone running on the iPad in non retina mode it looks like crap, when you see it with 'RetinaPad' enabling the higher resolution it looks great and 'almost' as good as the much more expensive iPad Specific version.

And that's the reason I think they don't allow 'Retina' Res iPhone on the iPad. So they can let developers make more money charging us 'more' or twice for an application that doesnt look like ******

why would they call it HD? 2048 x 1536 resolution is both higher than what is considered HD (1920X1080) and is a different aspect ratio. This just tells me these analysts don't no what they're taking about.

The name ipad 3145728 (= 2048 x 1536)was too long and not marketing savvy. (There is that word again)

I'll believe it when I see it, but bring on lightroom for the ipad HD.

That would really be sweet, Lightroom "Lite" (or whatever) on an HD iPad would be fantastic. Doesn't have to do everything the desktop version does, but if you could do some basic management of photos (group, delete), metadata tagging, and do some basic touchups in RAW (exposure, tone curves, cropping etc.), and then exchange easily with the desktop, man, I'd be all over that.

The iphone "fell out of favor" with us, too, after my young son dropped it on Day One and shattered the glass front. (Short drop; any other phone I've ever owned would have survived it).
The problem here lies elsewhere.

This boggles my mind. I have an iPhone 4, which I love. I bought an iPad 2 recently, and I can't tell the difference in screen resolutions. Is it because I hold the devices at difference distances from my eyes? Likely. But never once, not for a second, have the words "low res" entered my thoughts in regard to the iPad.
The mind is not the problem in this case.

When it comes to this subject, I've resigned myself to put aside any concerns I have and simply let Apple do what they're going to do anyway.
Ahhh, Apple staff can now sleep at night!

128GB SSD? Yeah, completely reasonable for $499, right? I've never come close to filling my 16GB, I can't imagine there's many people out there who need or can take advantage of 128GB. Keep dreaming.
The conundrum you are having is highlighted in red.

For the first time since hearing about the possibility of another iPad this year, after reading this story I suddenly just got the impression that this is going to be priced out of most users' tech toy gadget budget.

I think some are over thinking this... All they are saying is they are bringing their "Pro Apps" like FCP to the iPad... not specifically for the iPad HD.

IMO... all the iPad HD is, is a way for Apple to introduce a Retina display option. I'm guessing there will be limited supply and the cost will be higher, so having it as an option allows them to keep a $499 model while offering something totally beyond the competition for those customers that want it until they can get the supply up to meet the overall ipad sales. Face it... not everyone needs a retina display for the iPad. I find the current one is just fine... not to say Retina wouldn't be cool too.

true an HD iPad would really cool. I also wouldnt mind a $30 Aperture for iPad. Only a few more months :)

and this wouldn't create confusion with HD named apps? or would apple need to make yet another rule that no apps can have the name HD within them unless they are for the HD iPad? I don't buy it... meh to this rumor.

riiight

FCPX "Pro" Video App on an iPad... hah
It doesn't even work on the desktop.

+1

And a file system.

What is this "file system" you speak of?

Clearly this technology is far too advanced for consumer devices today! Maybe in 50 years we'll all be using devices that let us have a "file system"...and run more than one program at once too!

Psaw, right! ;)

Yeah, the software tweak to make it run native should be beyond trivial. Seems like a few lines of code-maybe just a configuration file.

So...this does seem SUPER suspicious that it's just to let developers sell more versions.
