Business Insider offers a vague rumor that Apple may be set to introduce a new social app for iOS devices at tomorrow's media event.
Specifically, our source speculates that the app could have some sort of media sharing and location sharing features. Maybe photo sharing.

It could be part of Ping, it could replace Ping, it could be part of MobileMe (which may go free), or it could be separate -- our source isn't sure. But this person says that if there is a surprise at the event, this could be it. (Or, who knows, maybe it won't be announced until WWDC, or never.)
Details are obviously scarce, and Business Insider doesn't even seem particularly sure of the claims itself, but it is certainly possible that Apple will look to make a more significant push into social apps, particularly if it can offer some sort of media sharing that would leverage the portable, multimedia nature of iOS devices.

Apple has been rumored to be placing a focus on social, media, and geolocation services with an upcoming MobileMe overhaul, changes that would mesh nicely with a dedicated iOS application for such features. Apple also recently filed a trademark application for the term "Places", covering classification areas dedicated to social networking, potentially hinting at a social geolocation service.

Perhaps to compete with BBM? I always thought their competitor to BBM should be called iM (iPhone Messenger / Instant Messenger).

It's on Page 2 for a reason.

IMO, the words Apple and Social just don't go well together.

I was so glad when Apple finally allowed me to remove Ping from the iTunes Side Panel (it was a waste of space).

Possibly even last year.

This could happen tomorrow, at WWDC or never. It could also be a unicorn, another type of horse or nothing. I could just be making ***** up to get attention. I could be Steve Jobs.

I own a horse.

Plus FREE Mobile Me please!!! I love this services, but it's quite expensive to keep paying the money every single year~ So please!!!!

Very funny indeed! But on a serious note, what kind of a rumor is this??? I am getting the feeling that over time the scale is tipping from "semi credible rumours" to "anybody's 2 cents". For this one, some editing could have removed the "maybe never" pointless comment.

Apple BBM? Seems plausible, especially if everyone who had an iPhone installed it. It would 'wipe' the floor with app's like WhatsApp.

you got that right. My service expires this month so hopefully by taking it off the online store they will make it free. Why else would apple take it off though the week before an event. Something will be announced tomorrow.

I can't believe no one has posted what it is: It's the new "Find My Friends" app, which uses the "Find my iPhone" tech already built into iOS via Mobile Me. And like "Find my iPhone", it will be free using mobile me, just requiring a new app to download.

It'll probably have something to the effect of better Ping interface/integration and somehow brilliantly intertwine it with mobileme and such.

I hope (if it comes out) that it is free

Cool story bro. I don't.

Why wouldn't you want a free service? I think a free service that allowed me to stream music and videos, communicate with friends, and send messages like BBM would be awesome.

Bases on the crap that has come from Apple in this area (e.g. Ping and MM), they can only go up from here.

well... thanks for the specificity... did you know that I am riding this horse.. backwards?

Very good!

I'd love if this was something like BBM, but something called Social isn't catchy enough for a messaging service. "Social Me?" Ping is better for that. :p
