This would be a stop-gap measure to Apples smartphone market-share problem, but it would indicate awareness and concern of the issue. It'd also be a very telling nod towards some sort of "iphone nano".

They should do this, because right now I can buy a top of the range dual-core HTC Sensation sim-free for slightly less than the several years old iPhone 3GS, and thats not just premium pricing - thats just stupid.

3GS technology is quite outdated. Yes, Apple made iOS5 to support 3GS still. But many key features missing due to hardware limitation.

So, 3GS sounds more like $250 to me :D

$249-$449-$649 feels more right to me. Or $349-$499-$649 -- your greed mileage may vary

Yep at 350 it doesnt really have a chance. 800MHZ cortex A8 512MB ram 3.5+" screen you already have for 150 now with android 2.2/2.3 . 200 extra just for ios? Although knowing apple it will probably be 400 - 5x0 - 6x0 .

There are too many rumors with too much misinformation. Everything is speculation until one of the test models are found out in the wild. %) It's time to just wait and see, and hopefully the wait won't be much longer.

All you people are getting hyped up for a phone that isn't even going to happen. Its going to be a 4s. Why? First off apple isn't going to do a whole redesign especially since this next iphone isn't even going to be on 4g network service. Apple will save the redesign for next year when both ATT/Verizon are both live on 4g. Besides theres nothing wrong with the current design iphone. Im 99.9% sure it will be the same iphone 4 just upgraded features. And there will still be morons like the ones in here buying it.

I am still hoping that there is going to be a redesign.

Apple hasn't updated the iPhone in 15 months...surely they must be introducing a new design along with iOS5? I'd be disappointed with just a 4S/G or whatever. I guess we'll find out next month. At least AAPL is rocking. No complaints there!

explain "iPad 2" naming. now.

4S would be a terrible name.

Even if the phone looks exactly the same, the A5, 8 MP camera and HSPA+ 4G would be worthy of the name "iPhone 5" because that is a very, very significant upgrade of internals.

4S just sounds idiotic, especially for the 5th iteration of the iPhone.

And it can't be called the iPhone 4G because Verizon doesn't support HSPA+ 4G.

Tbh I don't see a complete redesign until 4G is the norm in at least the US. Being from Australia and working for Telstra I can say 4G speeds won't be widespread here until at least 2013. Telstra being the largest telco may get it up and running in parts in 2012 but I can't see it being nationwide or adopted by all providers in the short term future.

I'm really hoping iPhone 5 supports 42.0 Mbps HSPA+ 4G.

That would be some excellent future proofing, even if iPhone 6 supports LTE.

I have a friend with an iPhone 3GS. He loves it. He's seen my iP4 and others. He understands it is better but would take a $50 or FREE iPhone 3GS over a iP4 or iP5 (whatever it is).

The 3GS works for him. He'd buy it again now….especially after he just dropped and shattered the screen he is trying to figure out what to do since there is no "replacement" and thus cheaper 3GS out at the moment.

Screen replacements are $60 on Craigslist. I did it on my 3GS, no regrets. Some college student with access to 'seconds' screens popped it in while I sat there.

My only advice: thoroughly play with the phone right there to make sure there are no dead spots. My replacement has a bit of one on the lower right which makes hitting some buttons difficult. It's not a show-stopper, and is perfectly acceptable given the price, but it's wise to QA the thing right there so you don't get too defective of a unit.
