Yet another snub at those of us who pre-ordered, and are still waiting.
You think they would have at least worked through the backlog
before offering this.

My thoughts exactly... if they have so many extras, why am I back-ordered with a 2-3 week shipping delay?!:confused:

If it's anything like last year, it's not going to be a lot of phones available every day. Many times I logged in to see what was there and it was definitely wasn't every model, color, or carrier. There was also a good chance that if you didn't check right when the next day's orders were listed, you'd be out of luck as they sold quickly.

Personal Pickup is just there so the stores don't have lines every morning before the store opens for only a handful of available phones. Online preorders have the guarantee that their phone is coming at least.

Although I've tried reserving a phone online in the UK at dead on 9am (when the orders open) for three days running and not been successful.

Not sure I'd be cancelling my online orders just yet.

Ordering via Apple Store App won't let you switch carriers

I tried this earlier today, but nowhere in the app does it show the ability to switch carriers. So I called Apple. Confirmed that the app has no mechanism to let me do that. I was sent to someone else who was going to connect me to the carrier I wanted to switch to. I finally gave up. Too complicated for me!

I'll do the online pre-order thingy or go to the local store and take my chances. Not in a hurry. Still really like my 4S.

:)

terrible

this is all unnecessary stock keeping (holding) and marketing hype

release the stock to all the retail stores (that if you have stock)

Even though I'm not in a huge rush, I may take advantage of this since my iPhone 5 isn't going to be delivered until the middle to end of October. I'll just simply call AT&T and have them cancel my order if I can reserve one for in-store pick up.

This makes me cringe. Last year I was in your shoes and guess what when I tried to cancel my AT&T pre-order, they said no, no way, no way Jose, no fxxking way, no, no, no... Don't believe me? Call AT&T right now and speak to a manager. You will be shocked.

I'm SO glad I learned the lesson and didn't pre-order this year.

so instead of buyers just walking in, they want you to do it online then come in?

They want the lineup on release day, because its good PR. Now that the hoopla is past, they don't want people coming in just to ask of there are iPhones today. You don't want UNHAPPY customers in your stores for the next 4 weeks bellyaching about how there aren't enough iPhones....

Ughh

So is it 10pm local time, EST, PST?????

I'm in the 2-3 week group... Suppose to be here around the 11th of Oct. If I cancel my online order do they update AT&T immediately so I can get the contract rate?

This article needs more info.

Makes sense. If you order online, you don't have an Apple employee next to you trying to upsell you on AppleCare or accessories.

You made a funny...iPhone 5 accessories. baaahahahaha

Things like this petty much make pre-ordering useless unless you get the launch day delivery. I remember last year online ship times were 2-3 weeks and I just walked into the apple store and picked one up, no problem.

Here's my situation: I get paid monthly, tonight, which includes my bonus that's funding my purchase. I was planning on going to the store at lunch and trying my luck. Does this system mean I might as well not even try because all stock will be "reserved" by people using this service?? I really wanted my phone tomorrow but I guess it may be Wednesday IF I can reserve my phone tomorrow night. Is this right??

Apple Care is for your benefit not theirs. They would rather you came in and paid full retail price for a new phone every time it broke. There is no commission so what does the retail employee care if you want to walk around with an uninsured $700 device?

So if I cancel online will it automatically put me as if I'm still available for a upgrade through AT&T? Or can I reserve for pick up and also just keep my online order just incase? And get both for a the 2 year contract price, but in the end only get one? So confused lol

The retail employee doesn't care but Apple does. While some people will utilize Apple Care if they break the phone, there's a large portion of iPhone buyers who will never have an issue (technical or accidental) with their phone. In those cases, AppleCare is $100 of profit for Apple.

Any word of this coming to Canadian Apple Stores? I'd rather drive 10 minutes to the closest Apple store than wait 2-4 weeks plus shipping time to get it in the mail.

This sounds like an escort service...

Maybe Siri got tired of answering that same question. :)

Depends on how you look at it. All this does is take some of the guess work out of it for "walk-in" buyers like yourself, but presumably the stores are getting the same amount of phones. So if you're store would normally sell out by lunchtime then I would say yes, you're hosed. Otherwise, you may still have a shot. I mean, worst case is you wait another day (or two I suppose) and reserve one tomorrow night.

So was this verified to begin at 8PM West Coast time? Has anyone found that out? Thanks in advance!

Do you have to cancel an existing pre-order (from Verizon, not Apple) before reserving, or can you reserve and then cancel in store?

I'm porting my number over to AT&T, so unless they want to start off on the wrong foot, I don't see why they wouldn't let me cancel my online order. If they did give me a tough time about it, I'll just continue to call back and speak to a rep who will cancel my order. Or I'll just elevate to a manager.

I think it's a bit ridiculous that they wouldn't let you cancel your order (not that I don't believe you). I assume that you eventually got your order cancelled?

No, this is the opposite. Apple is making these as fast as they can. They are basically tallying up what goes from the factory to on the plane to the stores each day. Each store is only getting a case or two each day. Apple is putting the contents of that shipment online the night before.

It's an amazing piece of supply chain management. Apple is finding new owners for the iPhones within HOURS of the iPhones packed from the assembly line.

Sure, they are also doing online orders, but really that's a separate fulfillment center process. Apple is ALWAYS going to put the Apple Stores first because those are the flagships... And they want iPhones on iShelves!!!
