There's a Sony store and an Apple store in the Domain in Austin. The Domain is a suburban mixed-use apartments/restaurants/hotels along with a high-end strip shopping center. There's no rivalry, mainly because the Sony store is empty(ish) - anywhere from zero to five or people the times I've walked by. I'd like it to be busier just to make sure it stays open.

The Apple store is always bustling.

That should be "was" a Sony store in the Domain. It closed a while back since, as you mentioned, there was rarely ever any traffic in the store (consistent in that it was rarely empty, but usually never more than a handful of folks). Part of the problem is that you can buy Sony products pretty much anywhere for a lot cheaper, so if they are going by revenue when deciding whether or not go keep a store open, it's going to be bad news. Sony just has to accept that if they are going to have a retail presence, really they are looking at having them be places to show off their wares and to do product service/support vs being Apple Store type revenue generators. Trick is (and for M$ as well) figuring out how to provide enough added value to make you want to go into the store.

The Sony outlet further south in San Marcos does get a good crowd, but there is a more tangible value proposition there due to the reduced prices on many items. If Apple ever opened up an "outlet store" it would be crush'ville. It could be open 24/7 and it would probably never be empty.

I thought I'd be first in line at the Glendale Apple Store Grand Opening, but I was the only one waiting outside the door. Here's a photo:

Doctor Q, first in line at the Glendale Apple Store

Then I realized my mistake. I'd turned east instead of west as I was driving to the store. I wasn't at the new Glendale California Apple Store at all. I was at the Apple Store in Glendale, Arizona! Whoops! ;)

We know there's already another Apple Store in Glendale, California but did you know there's an Apple Store in Glendale, Wisconsin too? I'm lucky I didn't end up there instead of in California.

The truth: I was in Arizona for the weekend so I purposely went to the Glendale, AZ store to celebrate the opening of the Glendale, CA store. And it turns out I wasn't the only Mac geek there; here's a license plate I spotted in the parking lot, which belongs to one of the Apple Store employees I talked to.

Hi all...stumbled upon this old post. As a Glendale, CA resident, both stores are definitely thriving even if they are 500 feet away from each other.

Besides, the Glendale Galleria store, by Apple's count considers it "Store 001" so it does have "some" place in history of Apple retail. :)

I'll be there for my 6s+ pick up tomorrow.
