Apple wants to hire more staff to work on artificial intelligence in the United Kingdom, CEO Tim Cook today said (via BBC News).

Cook reaffirmed that Apple is actively researching generative AI technology, and said that he expects Apple's investment in the UK and AI to increase. He also highlighted how AI is already behind several features on Apple devices, such as Fall Detection, Crash Detection, and iOS 17's predictive autocorrect.

Apple is believed to now be spending millions of dollars a day on conversational AI research. The company is reportedly working on a chatbot tool that some engineers have dubbed "Apple GPT" to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Cook is currently visiting the UK following trips to several other countries in Europe. Yesterday, he visited St. Mary's Primary School and Apple's new store in Battersea Power Station. Earlier today, he met the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The move to hire more staff appears to come in contrast to widespread redundancies at big tech companies. Yesterday, it emerged that Epic Games is laying off over 800 employees.

“I don’t know what you mean by smarter and more useful. Here’s what I found on the web…” 😉

I will say Siri does seem noticeably better on the new releases, but still slow. And sometimes on the APP2 especially it doesn't respond to "Siri" but snaps to for "Hey Siri" even though it works fine on the phone, and also on the APP2 most of the time.

Best thing about Siri is the swirling light icon. Just gotta make it as smart as it looks. Since they basically just put GPT-2 in as the new autocorrect and that works very well, I have hope that they'll fix it relatively soon since they seem to have a fire lit under their ass about this now.

Considering Apple has been ahead of the curve using AI (by a different name) for years on things like the cameras and photos app, it’s interesting that most of the comments people make are about Siri. Yes, AI can make conversation with bored people, but there are more uses than asking Siri trivia questions.

My experience is that Siri if far worse now than it’s been in years. I mean Siri is getting the basics wrong all the time now:

“Hey Siri, what’s the weather like today?”

“Here’s some information on Floyd Mayweather.”
You’re asking it wrong ;). Telegram-style requests like “Hey Siri, weather today” tend to be more reliable in my experience.

I just heard of “artificial intelligence”. Good on Apple for jumping on this early, sounds like the technology has a lot of potential. I think people are going to be talking a lot about it soon.
Tim started the VR project in 2014, so taking that as a reference point, we may get the first public release of the new AI technology as soon as 2033. Exciting times!

How about making Siri smarter and more useful 🤔🤨
That's kind of the point of AppleGPT. It's eventually going to replace Siri. Siri isn't generative AI, it's really old tech that's a burden to update. There's essentially zero reason for Apple to attempt to fix Siri, that projects needs to be rebuilt from ground up as a generative AI and not a crazy DB lookup.

Snark and cynicism aside, they did include USB-C on MacBooks back in 2015, shortly after being on the consortium that did invent it.

cynicism turbo mode activated they milked almost 9 years of iphone lightning cables to the detriment of the consumers
