That just seems weird to me. You move a fair amount of your U.S. user base to AT&T then offer a subsidized device on Verizon? There's no way I'm going to have an AT&T contract and a Verizon contract. I don't mind if they want to use the Verizon network but I'm not going to have two cell data plans that I pay monthly for.

Why not?

AT&T iPhone + Wi-Fi Only iPod Touch

Verizon Tablet + Wi-Fi Only Tablet ??

As long as they do it this way, I'm happy.

If the Tablet is WIFI only - then why would it require a cell phone provider?

Sell the thing through regular sales channels - more sales - less restrictions.

What if the device were created to utilize either GSM or CDMA-based carrier service? Either way, as long as there is Wi-Fi capability installed, I hope folks should be able to buy the device unlocked - without tethering themselves to a contract with any carrier.

Uh, what? They don't sell the iPod Touch through AT&T, right?

I'm saying it would be like that. You could buy the cheap one from Verizon with a contract or an expensive one from the Apple store with no 3G chip.

Verizon WTF?

So the millions of people with iPhone's would have to get a contract from two wireless providers?

I don't think iPhone users would be the target market, as likely if this is just a bigger iPhone then it would be unnecessary for you to have both (especially if you also have a laptop), unless you're a fanboy and just want one of each of Apple's devices just for the hell of it.

Whats everyones deal with going to vzw? Iphone wont be att forever. O no! the iphone will be even less exclusive, well, even though everyone and their 10 yr old daughter have one. I guess everyone enjoys getting raped by atts data/voice plan

ok boys get out photoshop and tack on "Verizon" to a few of the 100 billion mockups floating around.

Lol. And if this happens be prepared to see a dumbed down, restricted version of OSX, that you need to pay to use different features.

Problem with verizon, and the only thing i HATE about them, is that they basically dont offer any phones with wifi capabilities. It does make you use the data plan though.

Because then it would be $999, and people would just buy MacBooks instead.

I can't see Apple doing this. What I can see is new MacBooks with 3G chips sold at a subsidy.

the device will have a smart card interface so that any provider can sell their own 3g gsm or cdma device and allow for future upgrade to 4g.

In all seriousness, wasn't a rumor about a media pad on Verizon mentioned in April?

No one in their right mind is going to pay $60+ a month total to have both an iPhone data plan as well as a Verizon data plan, since the initial target for a tablet device would likely be iPhone users. That's just too much money per month for me (and probably most people).

Apple better not forget that we are in a recession right now. Subsidizing the cost of the initial device is not enough when you realize that the monthly plan cost is really what kills people's wallets in the long run. Same reasoning as to why buying a $99 iPhone 3G makes little sense when you realize you've only dropped less than 5% of the total cost of ownership over 2 years (about $4.20/month! - buy less coffee, geez!).

Sigh, I wish the American consumer was less stupid not to fall for such bull$*(#!

Even if the entry price is $0, no way do I spend $720 (24mos$30per) on a tablet.

Especially not when I have bought the last 2 iPhones and will probably buy next year's model.

This is one product, whether it's from Apple or not, where you have to say,
"Why do I need a tablet?"

That's why I don't buy into this Verizon thing. Apple obviously wants to sell units. Most people who already own an iPhone will immediately be put off by the notion of paying TWO wireless providers.

I believe, if there is a tablet with extra wireless connectivity, it will be via Wi-Fi and tethering. Maybe the release of this device will coincide with the unveiling of AT&Ts tethering service for the iPhone. Perhaps the device will be subsidized by AT&T with the addition of a tethering plan contract. That gives iPhone users a better reason to upgrade to tethering, and non-iPhone users the option of buying a tablet without a service plan.

Apple is working out a crazy plan where consumers can either choose to buy it or choose to not buy it.

This plan is still experimental, but they think it just might work.

Exactly. Makes no sense to do this, unless, of course, Apple has plans to drop AT&T like a hot potato. :apple:

I still don't understand the problem. I pay different companies for my home phone and my home internet.

Is that a terrible problem for me? I don't see how.
