Yeah I know, but you still miss my point. I'm strictly talking about the $9 cost and their ridiculous margins. If you're going to force such a huge (and unnecessary) change, at least have the courage to lower your margins and make this adapter ubiquitous in the transition time.
$9 for an adapter isn't exactly unreasonable realistically speaking, whatever the margins might be, and that's after the fact that anyone getting the phone would already have one included with it.

It's illegal to use headphones while driving a vehicle.

The Apple desktop charger has a headphone jack so you can charge while headphones are plugged in. There will also be plenty of 3rd party options.

Quit crying. Don't buy it if you're so upset.

What's stuck in your lightning port?

I plug my phone into my auxiliary port in my car stereo. Why do you want to spout law at me (you know this is true in every town and every country???), the AUX is the obvious answer or I could be a passenger in any of the other 3 seats... Sheesh!

The desktop charger isn't very cheap or convenient on the go. If I'm at home, it's not really a big deal if I'm low on power, I'm not counting on the phone for GPS directions...

I'm not crying, again, not sure what your issue is. All the criticism and you don't comment on my spelling error...?

I actually tired to use my desktop charger in my car, thinking it would solve a number of problems, but it didn't. The main reason is that the headphone jack only supports audio out, but not audio in. So I couldn't use my splitter to run audio in form my built-in factory microphone, and audio out to my stereo. So while it would work well to listen to music, it wouldn't work at all for making calls.

And that's the problem.

Anybody know if this $9 adapter supports audio input as well as out? If it doesn't then that's a problem.

Also -- does it support inline control signals for volume, mute, talk, Siri, skip, etc?

Sounds like there's a market for an adapter with a male lightning plug on one end and female mini-jack/female lightning on the other end.

Basically the Apple's iphone dock without all of the extra metal ... and presumably the cost.

Don´t buy this Stamdalone Adapter when you have an iP 6S or older, their will be no difference in sound quality . I`ve just chattet with someone from the online store.

The adapter goes on 3,5 Cinch again so the transfer rate is the same.

So do these have a DAC or is Lightning now providing an audio pass-through. No one seems to be able to answer this.

I would say no. As I wrote before, this adapter makes no sense for older models. Why are older models in the compatibility list?! I don´t get it.

The specs haven't been published yet, and likely won't be. It will take a teardown to see just what is inside. There is definitely a DAC in there as Apple doesn't appear to have revised the MFi specs, and the existing guidelines don't permit analogue audio over Lightning, nor has Apple ever attempted this in the past, which would have been easier to implement, and cost them less.

My guess is the reason Apple is being quiet about it, is because they don't want anyone to know how the Lightning adapter and EarPods stack up to what's in the 6s now. I would hope Apple has done the right thing here, but it's possible they but in a lower quality chipset, especially in the adapter.

So that a customer has broader compatibility. I ordered one of these out of curiosity to use with my SE. But in practical application, a person might have two iPhones, like a work and personal phone. This way, the adapter can be put on one pair of headphones that can be used on both iPhones.

If this IS providing higher quality output (or in) then someone might want to use it on an earlier model.

OR even if it's not higher quality, if someone has a broken audio jack this would be a solution.

Broken jack is an interesting thought.

I doubt these adapters are higher quality though. As has been pointed out many times, the iPhone DAC and amp are pretty good. Apple is still including a decent quality DAC and amp in the 7 for the stereo speakers, and they're likely putting the highest quality in the EarPods. So that's 3 DACs and amps in the box (and 3 ADCs). They're already spending a lot on audio without putting higher end stuff in an adapter that's just there for convenience, especially for $9. The amp can't really be much better either as it's still being powered by the iPhone. But we'll find out this weekend when somebody tears into them. Hopefully theyre at least equal to the 6s, as the 30-pin to Lightning DAC was highly criticized.

Convenience is the likely culprit, so that they can be used on all a persons iOS devices without having to remove it.

Having just bought a pair of Oppo PM-3s this makes me sick. The DAC is going to be garbage in this thing.

I agree but the "experts" among us have made the case that this whole thing is about "better quality audio" by preserving the digital stream OUTSIDE of the phone and using better quality DACs & AMPs optimized for individual headphones to convert the digital signal. If it's the same DAC & AMP doing the conversion, it's apparently the same analog signal coming down that wire to produce the same audio quality.

Pretty sure those people don't know what they're talking about. "Preserving the digital signal" doesn't make any sense. It has to be converted to analog at some point before it hits the speakers, 6' of cord makes no difference. Using a better external DAC could or escaping electronics noise in the iPhone could possibly, but most posters I've read seem to believe that moving the DAC to included Apple headphones rather than in the iPhone will make some big difference. It won't make a difference in headphones that cost a couple bucks to make.

Also, pretty sure the adapter cable will have a DAC since the lightning to 30pin adapter has one to feed the analog pins. Also pretty sure the dock with analog out has a DAC.

As far as needing one in a car. If you've been looking for a single wire charge/ analog audio Y cable like me, you've spent the better part of 5 years looking for one. They don't exist except a $100 BMW cable that essentially combines the Lightning to 30pin and a 30pin to USB and analog mini Y. I've been using a $5 imported 30pin to USB/audio Y with the Apple 30pin to lighting to accomplish this for years, but it's clunky. As is using a lightning extension to move the 30pin adapter to move the adapter further from the phone. I ended up cutting a small hole in my dash near my iPhone mount with the end of the 30pin adapter poking out. Works great, but I'd still like a single wire solution from Apple or anyone else. Why not use a Bluetooth adapter? I'm already plugging a cable in to charge, why not get the best audio at the same time.

If someone has evidence that you can get analog audio from the lighting port without a DAC, please enlighten me because I see no evedence of cable anywhere that would take advantage of it.

Also, each AirPod will need a DAC along with everything else stuffed in there, so I don't think fitting one into the lightning to audio jack adapter should be an issue.

The Apple Lightning to USB 3.0 adapter is actually pretty great in that it can power a Dragonfly Red DAC and charge your iPhone at the same time. The DAC allows you to plug in any 3.5mm headphones while offering far superior sound quality.

A dirt cheap adaptor for only $9. Along with including both EarPods and an adaptor when you buy your iPhone 7 it looks like Apple is trying to minimize any problems switching.

Plug in that adapter in your phone, hook up the phones, put on some tunes, stash the phone in your front jeans pocket, sit down and then tell me they are minimizing problems switching. Hey, it's only $9 for a new adapter assuming you don't wreck the lightning connector in your phone doing that.

I agree. I use my EarPods back and forth between my iPhone and my MacBook all the time so now I'll have to keep straight which pair go with which device.

Although once the AiPods are released and can be easily switched between once connected to iCloud it will remedy this problem and make things even easier.

Yes, except when you're charging them or looking for one that plopped out of your ear and ended up as cat's new toy. If the design is anything like the EarPods that's going to happen all the time. Not to mention the audio quality is pretty sad.

Nope, I was right:

You could at least post a link to the MacRumors article and not the competition! ;-)

The AI article was even posted hours after the MR one!

Sorry, didn't even know what board I was on. I got to this thread from a google search and have been following it because now having the ability to have a single cable solution that split out to USB and mini at one end has been driving me crazy since 2012. I'm hopeful that now someone will make one, preferably in black, although I don't know why nobody did previously (the aforementioned BMW adapter for $90 not withstanding).
