Wait for the UK numbers. They even have problems with supply of fresh foods. Seems like Brexit was a fantastic idea. For the rest of the EU.

But UK seems to turn back to the EU silently. They just re-joinend the EU research program Horizon...

Um the reason we had food supply problems is environmental not political. It's not a UK specific problem. In fact it's not that much of a problem. My local supermarket was stacked with just about everything yesterday when I went shopping.

But yes the whole Brexit thing was stupid indeed. I look forward to spending euros at some point in the UK.

Apple has announced an additional 1 billion euros investment in German engineering over the next six years as part of its Silicon Design Center expansion in central Munich
Great to see Apple has spread out into other technological centers in Munich Germany to draw upon a lot more talented parties.

Apple, which opened its first office in Munich 40 years ago, has chosen the city for its European Silicon Design Center, which will be opening in 2022. The company will invest a billion euros by 2024 in this project plus extra investment in R&D that will focus on 5G and future wireless technologies. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, wrote that he “couldn’t be more excited for everything our Munich engineering teams will discover — from exploring the new frontiers of 5G technology, to a new generation of technologies that bring power, speed, and connectivity to the world."

Coupled with higher energy prices, how does this make sense in the present and immediate future.
Silicon Valley is no different than any other technology center. Look at Apple 2nd campus, the roof of the circular structure has thousands of solar panels installed. Any large population combined large industry base equates to energy availability issues.

You would think that with European Union and politics forcing Apple to go all USB-C that they wouldn’t invest this much in European countries this quickly. Their a trillion dollar company so you get money and you get money and so on etc, etc.
If Apple actually believed Lightening Connector was better than USB-C their would have made it royalty-free and an open standard similar to USB for other manufacturers to adopt. This does not sound like Apple the altruistic, it’s probably had limitations and additional costs and not being an open standard didn’t help it either.

Seems Apple never learns from its own history or is just stubborn. Compare this to FireWire 400/800/1600, Apple Display Connector, etc.

Except people forget that geographically using solar to offset some if not all requirements for a company is not feasible due to changing seasons and other weather conditions such as snow, smog, clouds and rain, etc which factor into collection efficiency which already is not that great even with optimal conditions. Wake me up when photovoltaic is 92% or higher energy collection and conversion efficient.

I love the internet, when people jump to conclusions. Please don't spread misinformation.

The problem with a limited range of fresh food in the UK has nothing to do with Brexit. I personally have not had a problem buying tomatoes or lettuce.

From the BBC

In the winter months the UK imports around 95% of its tomatoes and 90% of its lettuces, most of them from Spain and north Africa, according to trade group the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

But southern Spain has been suffering unusually cold weather and in Morocco crop yields have been affected by floods, while storms have caused ferries to be delayed or cancelled.

It led to Morocco barring exports of tomatoes, onions and potatoes to West African countries earlier this month as it tried to protect exports to Europe.

The UK also gets some produce at this time of year from domestic growers and the Netherlands. But farmers in both countries have cut back on their use of greenhouses to grow winter crops due to higher electricity prices.

UK - hah I would not trust. Very volatile, Scientist from the EU leaving, degraded economy, isolation through Brexit, many internal issues - I guess not a good place to invest a billion in a future technology, when the current time is uncertain.
Careful there. Are you somehow implying that the fleet is no longer being?

Sigh. Back when the iPhone first started Apple used Infineon Celluar Modem chips. This is really going back to where they started off. Infineon is based out of the Munich area. That cellular modem division got sold to Intel (right as Apple left ... so somewhat of a fiscal bust for Intel) and then sold to Apple but never primarily moved out of Munich area in the first place. [ The rest of Infineon is still headquartered in a Munich suburb. ]

Same thing with the Dialog Power Management IC chips. Apple used them that were designed in Munich and eventually bought the folks doing the external parts and didn't make them move to a new town.

Basically this is Apple building new facilities in a city where they already had spent $1.6B buying up the talent that mostly already lived there.

Yes there is other Silicon activity around the metro area, but that is largely because this 'passed around modem division" predates both Apple and Intel in that location. It isn't because folks were flocked to Apple/Intel.. the ground work was already laid before those two got there. Apple's real estate moves is mainly just reshuffling the 'deck chairs' that were already there. ( not a huge headcount increase... more so where the headcount sits and the facilities they use that was already there. )

Not everything is local.

In light of this, SWM has also been investing in clean energy projects all over Europe, including a solar heat plant in Andalusia, Spain and off shore wind farms in the North Sea. The clean electricity from these installations is fed back into the integrated European grid.

It's the other way; they can use this investment as leverage with lawmakers. "Look how much we've helped your people!"

Business dealings aren't quite so black & white, but do involve shades of gray. Some case in points....
--Samsung is a major competitor to Apple, but Apple does use their displays in their phones on occasion (and IIRC, displays for monitors too?)
--Steve Jobs said he would go "thermal nuclear" that Android is just a ripoff of iOS, but the company was willing to let Google pay them a whole mess of $$ per year to be the default search engine on their various hardware

So they still want to save $$ whenever they can. It doesn't make business sense to spend $2 to $5 bln, for reasons including spite, when you can just spend $1.

That photo looks like a trap room from a Saw movie.
Heh... my take is a scene from the a Cube movie

Secretly, Tim Cook and Johny Srouji want an excuse to travel to Germany to sample Bavarian Beer on a regular basis and have a decent serving of roasted pork knuckle while they're there.

See, I fixed the article for you there...
Well, Johny Srouji is Israeli, so he might not chow down on the pork knuckle, but he would definitely enjoy the beer with Tim.

Yeah which is exactly what they don't use in semiconductor design. It's all boring stuff sitting behind PCs staring at squares. I've done it. I know :(
They are working on 5G technology. If you think long and hard about it, you’ll figure out why radio signal testing is part of the development process. 🤔

I can see the Seidlstrasse location from my office window right now. Currently it's an old, abandoned (ok vacant) building. Unfortunately, my office will be moving to the other side of the tracks near Hirschgarten before Apple completes this. It's quite a good site as it's between the Hbf and Stiglmaierplatz. There's a microbrew nestled in amongst the Lowenbrau and Spaten breweries not 100 yards from the location. It's a hop, skip, and a jump from one of my favorite biergartens.

What's going to suck the influx of highly paid people to really screw up the limited housing in Munich. I thought Boston prices were bad when I left 6 years ago. My current "row house" not 5km away is 150sq m (i rent) and would sell for >1.5MM eur. At least for that much in Boston's northern suburbs I would get ocean views! :)
