You don't think they could have a low end model without it and a high end model with it...?

It would be great if they offered a high-end touch with wifi and a low end without it. I would get the low end. No need to spend an extra $200 to surf the web considering the only time I'm within wi-fi range is at home where my computer is anyway.

Maybe Apple will market this film with the new widescreen iPod since the remasterd and restored DVD comes out end of October (just announced today). Now I really doubt Beatles music will come out on iTunes tomorrow...

THE BEATLES' HELP!

The DVD will be a 2-disc set. Disc 1 will feature the original film digitally restored with a newly created 5.1 soundtrack, while Disc 2 contains an hour of extra features, including:

*The Beatles in Help! – 30 minute documentary about the making of the film with *Richard Lester, the cast and crew. Includes exclusive behind the scenes footage of *The Beatles on set.
*A Missing Scene – Featuring Wendy Richard
*The Restoration of Help! – An in depth look at the restoration process.
*Memories of Help! – The cast and crew reminisce
*Theatrical Trailers – 2 US trailers and 1 Spanish trailer.
*1965 US Radio Spots - Hidden in disc menus.
*There will be 2 editions of the DVD - a standard digipack and a deluxe boxed set that will contain a reproduction of Richard Lester's original annotated script, 8 lobby cards and a poster, plus a 60-page book with rarely seen photographs and production notes from the movie.

Both the deluxe book and the standard booklet feature an introduction by Richard Lester and an appreciation by Martin Scorsese.

I really have no clue what you are talking about. (Typed from my iPhone)

Well it's all about pleasing ME you see. Jobs screwed the pooch on the iPhone and has a 'lotta fixin" to do before he pleases me. Here's hoping he pleases me with this release tomorrow. Pleasing me is his most important job.

My hope for new Apple iPod lineup:

3G shuffle

New, slightly larger model with small display to show time elapsed, track name and battery life. It will have clothes clip like current shuffle. Will use 2G shuffle data connector.

1 GB flash--US$70
2 GB flash--US$100

3G nano

New, shorter (heightwise) case with same sized screen and Click Wheel as current nano. Will use standard iPod data connector.

4 GB flash--US$150
8 GB flash--US$200

2G mini

New model that looks like a 2G nano "writ large" with wider case but nano-sized Click Wheel that incorporates a display almost the size of the current 5.5G iPod video display and can play videos. Case will have rounded edges, be about 1 mm thicker than nano case, and use standard iPod data connector.

8 GB flash--US$200
16 GB flash--US$250
32 GB flash--US$300 (available early 2008)

6G iPod video

New model that looks like a cross between the iPhone and the 5.5G iPod video, with full-screen display and touchscreen operation. User has choice of iPhone-type interface or emulated Click Wheel interface. Will use standard iPod data connector. Either Bluetooth or Kleer wireless technology with appropriate special data encryption for wireless headphones, wireless connection to appropriate car stereos, and for use with the new iTunes music kiosks. No Wi-Fi technology due to battery life issues, increased cost and complexity of device and possible security issues.

80 GB HD--US$250
120 GB HD--US$300
160 GB HD--US$350 (available early 2008)

^SactoGuy18, I like your "available early 2008"! Well actually I wont like it if that actually happens, but apple have a tendency to release things that wont be in your hands for quite some time. So I don't even know why everyone is getting riled up, whatever is released who knows how long we will have to wait before we can get our grubby hands on them.

If it's true that the new iPod Touch will be strictly flash based, I'm not buying. I need at least 100GB's. I don't think Apple is stupid enough to forget about people like me though.

^MK25toLife

No Apple aren't stupid enough to forget about people like you, thats why they will hook you up with the same iPod as you can buy today but with a larger hard drive, possibly that 100 Gigs you desire!

^ whilst making the "top end" touch model flash only as people have suggested, gently guiding the customers towards this way of thinking. By the time they convince the "maximum storage" fans, perhaps flash will be of a big enough capacity and cheap enough to replace HDDs permanently.

It's yet another plausible theory.

If its wi-fi wont we need to wait for FCC??? im not american so i dont know the details of an FCC but the iphone needed one

who's irrelevant to Apple?

If it's true that the new iPod Touch will be strictly flash based, I'm not buying. I need at least 100GB's. I don't think Apple is stupid enough to forget about people like me though.
There are several demographics for the HDD iPod line which I pray add up to enough sales to keep an plattered model in the line-up for one more gen or two -- when, BTW, portable video media will more entrenched and a reliable 180-240 (or 320-500) GB HDD will still be way cheaper than 64 (or 128) GB of Flash. New gens of RAM fabs cost billions each.

So who will still buy HDD iPods?

1. People who know how to use playlists and other IT interface magic and want/need their whole (or most of) their media collection with them. All the justifications I hear (from Mac podcasters and tyros alike) for abandoning us sound so much like a debate I remember from the "days of DOS": "Who would ever need more than 640 K of memory?"

Doesn't anyone travel for more than a day or two with their iPod? I keep my main music collection on a desktop 'cos it's almost as big as my entire notebook HD and I can't predict which media I'll really want two weeks from now. And with my iPod, while I back the collection up separately, I really don't NEED my collection on my notebook.

2. People who barely know how to use playlists and other IT interface magic and want/need their whole (or most of) their media collection with them. They're going to HATE having to figure out how to keep re-syncing different parts of their collections, so many of them won't and they're going to feel that it just isn't worth it. At the least, the quality of their experience will be compromised.

3. People who also like to carry a ton of pics around with them. Or videos.

4. People (pros and prosumers) who like to use the hard drive on an iPod AS a hard drive. Some back up their OS. Some carry data files and DMG downloads. And isn't there a way to use your iPod as a field drive, e.g., to take pics off your camera and put 'em on a Pod?

Luckily, sales are profitable enough for Apple to continue to make MacPros, even though the sales aren't even close to those of MB's and IM's, and I'm personally reasonably hopeful that will continue to be the case for high-capacity iPods, where 120 GB drives are no larger, no more power hungry (I think) and now cost no or little more than the biggest available in the previous gen. Even if no more than 10-20% of iPod unit volume, Apple will still make more per unit than on 4-6 Shuffles, so a greater percentage of iPOD REVENUE.

As for the argument that big screen plus HDD equals quick battery death, that's really only going to effect those with heavy screen use, if you set the screen to only light up when you're picking new music. As for video-intensive use, even if the battery life on my current iPod were cut by 25% I'd still have plenty of useful life once I knew the parameters and that's with zero advances in battery tech, which while a laggard, continues to advance in drips and drabs. But probably screen + HDD + WiFi + "a radio" does push the limit..... ...so doubt you'll get that combo....

(160 GB is still probably pricey enough to probably not make the cut, except possibly as a BTO like the 2.8 GHz CPU on the iMac Extreme, if it even shows up in this round).

I have a far-out prediction!! Everyone, notice me (just kidding.)

Although this is very unlikely, it would be cool if Apple came out with a Beatles' iPod (kind of like the U2 iPod), and preloaded a handful of Beatles songs onto it.

Crap, I better stop my daydreaming!! ;)

Although we gearheads on this forum have mostly been talking hardware and UI, with the Moscone center as background, do expect some significant content announcements of some types, and.... ...somebody famous will play at the end.

Beatles, the iPhone Ring Store, more video content, iTunes 8, whatever. Because in the end that matters alot to Apple.

Also while it's premature to expect a whole new phone while the world-wide roll-out of the first's just beginning and there's lots of interface work left on this model, maybe there'll be a fairly major iPhone firmware update (1.1?) with wide-screen keyboarding, filling in another empty button space or two or....?? And the living room/home theatre room being a huge market still not owned by any one company or device class, it's worth noting things have been relatively quiet on the Apple TV front since it was introduced. Plenty of room for updating there, e.g., ITMS purchases from your wide screen...

The iSuppli report today will certainly be humped with all that press watching

Take it with your desired level of seasoning - ThinkSecret has "confirmed" it will have a 3.5" widescreen (ala the iPhone) and a 120GB HDD. It nay have WiFi, but won't have radio.

Digital Radio = HD Radio?

So does Digital Radio = HD (Hybrid Digital) Radio?!

Virtually every digital electronic device sold in the United States needs FCC approval.

For example, check the back of an iPod Shuffle (behind the clip) and you'll see an FCC logo.

Ibiquity's HD Radio system is the format that has been approved by the FCC for use in the USA. (Don't confuse this with satellite radio. HD Radio makes use of the exact same range of broadcast frequencies as AM and FM stations have traditionally used, and the base implementation doesn't have any subscription requirements.)

But in other countries, other systems (such as DAB / DRM / CAM-D) have been adopted instead.

Mobile chipsets capable of decoding the digital portion of a HD Radio signal simply don't exist yet. The full-sized chipsets would drain any handheld device's battery in a matter of minutes.

(only directed to those with childish demands, you know who you are)

Thank GOD Apple doesn't seek your 'approval' before they goto launch new products ...

One more thing, those hoping for a 'phoneless' iPhone ...

- Get mommy and daddy to switch the family plan to from Verizon
- Or, pony up the $175 ETF from your current crummy carrier and buy an iPhone already.

*** because it will never happen ***

:apple:

hmm....

Dude, the future is about wireless, being able to buy a song wirelessly is a feature everyone wants and every gadget will have, its not really a copying issue. Apple will definitely implement it a LOT better though.

AND once and for all will you people freaking realize how stupid it is to expect a phoneless iPhone??? If they do that, they might as well proclaim the iPhone a failure right now, it would be suicide for the iPhone. The iPod is a digital media player.... The iPhone is a communications device, so if you want those features buy a damn iPhone and quit expecting Apple to make the stupidest business decision in history.

hmmm....
