Once you've bought Apple software, the license tends not to expire.
Full Atmos will cost money though, because Dolby Atmos (TM) has a license cost associated with it.
Spacial audio is an Apple-only thing, so whether anyone outside of the Apple ecosystem will give a damn is another matter.
Wouldn’t they just be able to enable support for 9.1.2 audio? Logic doesn’t need to be able to encode Atmo, just support additional channels with their surround plugins, panner / balances, meters and plugins, and be able to bounce and import 9.1.2 surround interleaved files.

or would this infringe on Dolby’s trademark?

I don't know about whether it would infringe on Dolby's IP, but the issue is partly whether you want to be able to render Atmos files yourself, in Logic. If you do, that would need an Atmos renderer, for which money must be paid. The difference between surround and Atmos is that, with Atmos you are setting the position of the sound in space, for a decoder to choose the speaker balance at playback time (depending upon the number and position and distance of speakers) rather than commiting certain sounds to a channel which is what you do with surround. So it doesn't matter how many output channels Logic has, you can't achieve the same thing without some kind of Atmos renderer.

Interestingly, Spacial Audio is a layer on-top of Atmos, so Apple must already have come to some kind of licensing arrangement with Dolby, at least for playback. And if I was Dolby, I would be happy to cut the price of the renderer if Apple were to include it in all purchases of Logic - that's a lot of licenses and a lot of opportunity for Dolby to make money.
Of course, the biggest winners will be the speaker manufacturers - price yourself up a 7.1.4 system - just 11 full-range speakers and an LFE box. And 12 channels of D/A. And a 12 channel monitor controller. And a bigger (and taller) room.

Please work on bugs, stop releasing features that are not critical:

-automation export/ render still with the same bug, as 5 years ago, it doesn't export the right curves values
-logic native plugins will not reset automation values in tracks ....since 2018 ..no change
-Pitch correction is not reversible , once the source material is pitched, there is no going back. Basically you have to work with duplicates which might be fine for simple sessions, but not on larger sessions..

I don't need new features , I need working features.
I think the logic team is doing the best job of almost any team at apple. It’s so much. And so cheap. The updates have been free and absolutely great for years. Especially the small attention to detail.

It’s just an incredibly complex app.

I haven’t had any of your problems. Automations export correctly for me. Your second problem I don’t understand (you want plugins to reset automation values? Why?) and the last one about pitch correction not being reversible is just not true. You can pitch the region from the region inspector non-destructively. Or use a plugin.

If you can describe your problems a little more accurate, you can leave them in the ‘feedback’ app. I’m sure the logic team will check it out and fix it.

Hey. Have you ever called them? I call pro app support frequently with bugs and am yet to have a feature go unaddressed and unfixed. usually fixed with a bug update in 2-6 weeks. The in app report actually does nothing.

1. Works just fine for me. Please describe your problem a bit more, maybe we can help you.
2. What do you mean? It works fine. Sounds like you have your track in touch/latch instead of read maybe?
3. What do you mean? It works fine. Command+Z to reverse anything in pitch correction.

Now I want to point out 5 features I really wish Apple would consider to make Logic awesome. Dolby Atmos is not one of them. I know Apple needs to be "in front" of technology, meaning Dolby. This will be huge within 5-8 years but for now, I need convenient features to make the workflow more efficient.

1. Update or do SOMETHING about the browser for samples I have on my ext/internal drives. It SUCKS atm!! :) Please, for god sakes, seriously Apple, do something about it. It has been the same since dinosaurs left earth. Have a look at Mediabay that Cubase does, Loopcloud or XO for inspiration.
I need an intelligent browser where I can search for samples based on length, key, name, type, bpm, date etc, make favourites and select the drives I want to include in my search (like Mediabay does) and so on.
Today, I don't want to use the browser at all because it sucks. It needs attention. Every modern DAW is better on that than Logic.

2. Search for plugins on insert, or at least have an option to select if you want have the search option or not.
Today, you have to click and click and click to find the plugin you want even though I have them organised via Plugin-manager. It's just workflow.

3. ARA2 integration, for plugins such as Melodyne or VocalAlign. Also, being able to customise the control bar to add these integrations later on. Cubase has it already.

4. I don't know if this is possible or not, haven't found it yet but Cubase (I think Ableton aswell) has the clip slide function for audio. This is an awesome workflow that would make Logic just SO much better.

5. Make an update on the stock EQ. I don't need fancy things but please get rid of the static 8 band thing.
Or - just leave it as is (no need to update graphics or layout) but remove the 8 band shelf. I want to be able to set my shelfs myself, like Fabfilter Q3.

Thanks.

Bring it to the iPad Pro M1
Maybe if they make iPad versions of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, they'll call them Final Cut Express and Logic Express, like the "lite" versions of the old Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro they sold to prosumers/hobbyists during the 2000s.

I’m new to logic. I bought because I wanted to use ‘midi learn’ which was not available on iPad GarageBand. I would love to see logic or an update version of garage band on iPad. iPad touch is so much better when jamming.

Could be a game changer for DAWs if done right. If they bring mixing for spatial sound easy with AirPods Pro or Max I’m one of the first to get me a couple of them to try it out since I’m used to mixing with headphones. Looking forward to see what Apple brings the table!

If you have wired headphones you get the full benefit of atmos.

Spatial Audio IS Atmos. Apple can pay for the licenses in bulk and offer Dolby a deal they can refuse. If it boosts adoption of Logic pro, attract top artists and generally move the industry, those licenses pay for themselves
