Hey -

I am sitting on an ancient 6S+ right now and finally think I may upgrade (though part of me feels like it's silly if 5G is coming next year, but whatever). I was considering trading in my 6S+ and getting an 11.

As almost an experiment (after years of treating my phones with kid gloves and covering them in all sorts of skins and cases) I decided over the last year or two to go naked with my phone. Still works fine, but there are heavier scratches on the screen (it isn't broken or shattered) and decent scuffs and dings all over the body. And I think the external speaker is a bit muffled as well.

I'm wondering if I purchase the 11 and tell Apple I have a working 6S+ for trade-in, will the current condition be acceptable to them, or (after already making the purchase) will they come back and say that my phone isn't acceptable for trade-in once they receive it and then charge me the $120 or so they initially credited me?

Just curious, thanks. In the past I've always bought my phones through Verizon.

Going naked may have cost you, unfortunately. From Apple's website:

Is the iPhone in good condition?
Answer yes if all of the following apply:
  • It turns on and functions normally
  • All the buttons work
  • The cameras work
  • The body is free of dents and scratches
  • The touchscreen and back glass are undamaged

I’m wondering the same. My phone meets all the conditions except scratches. I have to assume, based on the “free of dents and scratches” on the Apple website, that the phone has to be pretty pristine and my surface scratches on the screen (from three years of use without a screen protector) would not allow me to turn in the phone. I was going to just call Apple if I have time later today. If I do I will report back.

definitely let me know. often they're pretty conservative with the legal language, but at the end of the day they seem to honor the credits and things unless you send in a completely non-working device.

You could try to trade it in, ajm222; the Apple verbiage does say "Up to $120", which means Apple may give you less than $120, due to any damage.

It's all about how comfortable you are to press the "Yes" button after reading the good condition points.

Or stop by an Apple Store, show them your phone, and ask them if you should attempt a trade-in?

I know it's not an option for everybody but when I contacted Apple regarding my cracked XS they said if you can make it into an Apple Store they can evaluate it on the spot rather than having to send it in and hope.

FWIW, I’ve traded my iPhones in a few times in the past and they’ve always given the full quoted value.

My phones have all had light scratches, scuffs, and in the case of my iPhone 6- discoloration due to an otter box I used.

Each time there were no issues with the trade-in. Each phone was free of deep scratches, cracks, dents, and they all had fully functional parts.

Also my experience. Those are things I consider normal wear and tear. They mostly are concerned with broken glass on the front or back.

thanks all. maybe i'll just drop by my apple store in person and ask. i live about 5 minutes from one.

Definitely worth it. I went to the website last week and was told up to $220 for my kids 32GB 7 Plus.

In person I got a gift card for $270. I think the rep thought I was trading a 128GB phone. :) :)

From the Apple Store app if you answer "no" to "Is the iPhone in good condition":

Is the body of the iPhone in good shape?
Answer yes if all of the following apply:
-It's free of major cracks, chips, and scratches
-If there's glasswork on the back, it's not shattered

I guess you'd have to get their interpretation of "major."

exactly. kinda subjective. but again, they seem to be pretty relaxed when it comes to that sort of thing. i have a few decent and obvious scratches that you can feel on the screen from when it dropped onto my floorboard and scraped across some gravel or something when i tried to grab it. but having some idea of what they do with the phones after they get them, i can't imagine that would be a big deal. guess i'll find out.

What about if your phone is prestine minus a crack in the lens cover glass? The camera takes pictures no problem but visibly its cracked. Has anyone had issues trading in a phone with cracked camera lens?
