So how exactly does this work? Can you still buy via AT&T next or would you have to pay in full? Curious as to the details.

Purchase via Apple either full cost or financing or through carrier. Depending on carrier promotion, you may get a different trade in value than Apple. So you might look at Apple Trade In or carrier trade in promotion. For Apple Trade In, at checkout it may ask you if you are trading in any device and may send you a packaging to ship it or bring to a local Apple store to get a gift card or refund off the original purchase from Trade In.
