Good spot. looking forward to trying this out once I get home from the office.
It looks great
Good update from what I have seen so far.....
Content is pretty patchy at present though.
Some quick samples - bad light due to daylight & projector use, but you get the idea
I think it looks way better than YouTube, and the easy of selecting some random stuff on my AppleTV - excellent!
Here you go:
I don't care about YouTube, however, I would love to know if any bug fixes are included in this update. Anyone know?
it is very good, but it breaks all the plug-ins...
Can't tell you, as I haven't experienced any bugs.
i havn't experiences any bugs either...
Wow, even though I am not the biggest Youtube fan, this is really cool. I really like the menu. I was wondering how the YouTube interface was going to be. Great spot. Thanks for posting!
Does anyone know if the update breaks SSH and AFP? I'd hate to have to pull the drive out again.
Bad news according to chas0001 on this thread (here, post 132);
Well, that is a bummer. Looks like I'll forego this update.
Yep the update definately removes any hacks made to the apple tv
I enabled ssh again using the USB patchstick (because I do not want to open it and void the warranty) and tried to install the ATVfiles.Frapplicance but it will not appear in the Apple TV Menu (after both killing finder and rebooting). I am sure somebody will sort the problem out soon. Just keep and eye on http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
How does the USB stick work? I'm not familiar with it.
You may not have a choice...
Its a custom boot image on a USB stick.
i.e. You plug in the USB stick, and get the Apple TV to boot off it (using the remote control trick, menu and minus) and then the boot script meddles with the Apple TV's hard drive to install stuff.
Anybody know if after the update TV still slices off the top and bottom of videos? I noticed on some videos with subtitles.
Its essentially a boot image that should be copied to a USB stick (in my case an 1G Ipod Shuffle). After creating the Boot Image on the Stick you plug it into the AppleTV's USB port and reboot. The AppleTV then boots from the Stick (you may have to hold down the menu and - key a few times). The Boot image does 2 things essentially 1. it enables SSH on the AppleTV and 2. it copies Perian to the quicktime library.
The boot image can be downloaded from popular torrent sites. Search for a torrent called "Apple TV Patchstick - modify your ATV without opening it". It contains documentation on what you need to do. I obviously cannot guarantee your results but it worked for me.
All we need to do now is to get ATVfiles to work!
And for those that mounted drives on other systems, a way to do that. Looks like remote file support was removed.
NP. Thanks for reminding me that my old Shuffle would be a great USB key to use for Patchstick.
If you've already hacked your AppleTV and have SSH running, I'm hoping that editing the /etc/hosts file to point the site that the Apple TV uses to get updates from (mesu.apple.com) to another IP address will prevent it from doing that "every 7 day" update thing.
I tried getting Apple file Sharing working by reinstating the APPLEFILESERVER.APP (that was removed in the update) but then it launches it reports an Illegal Request. There must be something else Apple has removed (or I don't know what I am doing - Thats a possibility too!).
Luckily as SSH is working I can use FUGU as a means to copy files to the Apple TV. Apparently a new version of ATVFiles should be released later this evening or tomorrow (ATVFiles Proposed Update)
Damn, i was hoping they might put in a decent visualiser for music, would look awesome on the big tv's most of us probably have these things hooked up to.
The album covers are nice but meh.. kinda boring.
The Apple TV will not apply any update without your consent.
