Hello Chaps
Need a little help here im sure it's been asked before so hear go's

i have Apple tv1 and Apple tv2 plus macbook Pro Ipad Iphone ect ect ect.
is it possible to use my Apple Tv1 as an itunes Server.

so i can stream to Apple tv2 and stream from my macbook Pro to apple Tv1

so all my itunes Library Movies and Music will be stored on Apple tv1 freeing up space on my macbook pro.

then Apple tv2 will pick up this info from Apple tv1 rather than from my Macbook Pro.

so the result will be macbook pro can now be switched off and apple tv1 will be the main itunes server,

all help will be appreciated and any links would be great.

thankyou

the short answer is No. but if you are willing to do some work and use a different ui ont he ATV2, you can get pretty close.

if you really want to do this, you might be better off using different devices. The ATV does what it does really well. If you want it to do something different, why not get a device that does what you want in the first place?

check out firecore.com

You would have to flash the ATV1 and jailbreak the ATV2. FireCore has solutions for both sides...

APPLE TV 1 as Itunes Server

Thanks for your reply.
i was under the impression that all i had to do was

hack Apple tv1
and install OX 10

then load up itunes
and point the path from my macbook pro to now show it's destination for itunes as Apple tv1

then homeshare apple tv2 to connect to apple tv1

i know that sounds easy and there is a lot more work to be done but i guess you know what i mean

thankyou again

Yes, you could do that. You just have to get Leopard running and iTunes installed with all your media. Remember to image the hard drive's current partitions. If you destroy those without having a backup, there is no way to get your Apple TV 1 working as an Apple TV again. Lastly, Apple TV 1's have very low specs. Don't load more on to it that what is absolutely needed.

Don't you mean Tiger? Though I believe Leopard can work by using an osx86 bootloader.

Possibly, there are plenty of youtube videos showing how to install and run a full OSX 10.4.8 on the ATV1, then all you'd need to do is find and install a version of iTunes that would work on OSX 10.4.8. I'd pull the original hard drive out and experiment on a new one so that you could easily get the ATV1 working again if anything went wrong, no harm in trying:D

So 10.4.11 is a no-go?

Apple Tv 1 as Itunes Server

Thanks Chaps

this is great and some great answers so soon.

this is i guess where the problems are i also have heard that you may only be able to run OSX Tiger.

and if i were to get this to install i dont think you can then install

Itunes 10.

so if this is going to be a problem is there another way to set up a Itunes server using other products.

that i will still be able to stream from mackbook pro and homeshare with apple tv2

kindly

Yes, I use a low powered Atom nettop box to run Windows and iTunes 24/7 to serve up my media. Any system that can run iTunes, be it OSX or Windows will do as a server.

No idea, all the videos I've seen are of 10.4.8. 10.4.11 may work. The problem I now see is that as far as I know to use HomeSharing you need iTunes version 9 or greater but version 9 and above require OSX 10.5.

Ah ok.

10 and above requires 10.5, iTunes 9 will run on Tiger.

Now I see why you asked about 10.4.11 as thats the minimum requirement for iTunes 9.2.1, didn't know that.

I've just seen your post about running 10.5 with a bootloader, if thats possible then the problems solved as you could run any version of iTunes.

Nope I mean Leopard/10.5.8. I've had it running on an Apple TV 1G without a problem. No extra boot loader required. Just a new kernel and a few kexts and it works without any problems.

Itunes Apple tv server

Ok so if you have been running leopard on apple tv 1

can you post a link on how to do this.

then the next question is what version of itunes are you running

kindly

I would also be interested in this, the only guides I can find use iDeneb.

for 10.5.8 the latest version of iTunes will work.

I really need the custom image

I am searching all over the internet how to do this and i always find a hakint0sh.org link but hackint0sh.org forums are down and i cant find the image anywhere, could you please upload it on a site and add a link here?:(
