I've seen the question asked a few times around here, but all are very old. I was curious on an updated list for what can be done on an ATV 2. I'm picking one up to go along with my new 4S, and was wondering if I should jailbreak it or not. I have my methods of getting any movies/music I want, and just wanted it to toss videos from my phone and computer, onto the "big screen". Extra applications would be nice, but I don't want it to be this 100% crazy custom firmware. I went from 32GB windows gaming, custom firmware rooted driods, etc to apple because I feel like customs are a mess. I just like everything to be nice an organized, but if there's any sweet benefits from a ATV2 Jailbreak, and no risk of lacking the performance of the ATV2 by doing so, by all means I will do it. So if you know of anyone who's done it, or you have done it, let me know the benefits. Thank you so much guys!

I had mine JB'd two software updates ago. I used xbmc to stream .avi files and it worked well. It took awhile to figure out the network settings within xbmc.

The JB process itself I found rather clumsy (unplug, plug in, press the remote, etc) and beyond xbmc and a weather app it didn't add much of anything.

If you manage to load plex I think it becomes that much better. I haven't ran plex on my apple tv but the computer implementation of it is a lot nicer than xbmc. Whether some of the internet streaming plugins within plex work on the atv i don't know.

So I would say it's worth a try. Much like JB'ing a phone however once you get it set up the way you like you may be tempted to just leave it like that and get a new/second phone/atv when the software updates become compelling enough to change.

Well right now you wouldn't be able to backup your SSH if you had a 4.3.x iOS so if you were to JB you would have to upgrade to 5 and that;s only a tethered jb at the moment. However, with that in mind you ABSOLUTELY need to jb just for plex. The backend for plex is really it's bread and butter. My wife who isn't really into techy things or anything that takes too many steps to use, she uses plex and loves how it shows her what movies we have watched and what tv shows we have seen. Plus no matter where I open plex I have access to that, and I have to say, the 720P 4Mb setting for streams is really really good. If I open an MKV natively (1080P high bitrate) and compare that to the 720p it's obviously not as good but surprisingly it looks quite good. Good enough that my wife won't care and since it puts everything all in one for her. Netflix, tv shows, hd movies etc, I def suggest it.

Just to check, does a tethered jailbreak require me to leave my ATV2 attached to my computer all the time, even after it has been hacked ? Or does it have some other meaning ?

    Im a plex user....

Having it jailbroken does mean you can't update as quickly etc, but im willing to forfeit that to have plex play films.

Although you can actually do that by airplay now anyway.

If you cant be bothered and dont know what you want to install on it, dont bother jailbreaking.

Tethered Jailbreak means that when ever the AppleTV powers on it needs to be done through the jailbreak process while it is attached to a computer. Once it is powered on and running the computer can be detached.
