My Apple TV 2 has been playing up a lot lately; will no longer work with a remote (tried two which work fine with Mac) and have to use the iPhone app, restarting itself for no apparent reason especially with Netflix, often won't play previews saying they're not available, sound lost when using airplay from a computer, not showing cover images, general slowness etc.

This is a pity as the functionality is still sufficient for my needs, hiring movies and TV, Netflix, streaming music from my computer, and it is actually probably the best value for money technology investment I've ever made. I know that the ATV2 are no longer supported (or whatever the term is); but are all these issues likely to be symptomatic of the device's out of date firmware and software, or is there something in the hardware that is broken? It seems like there isn't much hardware wise that could even break?...

Your hardware in the ATV2 might be going bad, but first thing I would try is to do a full restore of the firmware by hooking the unit up to an iTunes PC or Mac with a USB to Micro USB cable. iTunes should immediately recognize the ATV2 and prompt you if you'd like to RESTORE the firmware. My ATV2 was acting up in Airplay (pretty much all I use it for anymore) and the system RESTORE fixed the issue for me.

You will lose your accounts so will have to re-enter all your account info such as Apple ID and Netflix account, but it's worth the effort.

I'll give this a shot, thanks Soondae.
