Apple TV 2 Questions

A couple of questions:
- I have a plasma TV, AV Receiver, PS3, Sky HD & am considering Apple Tv. If I connect it to my Receiver will it play music without the TV being on?
- Why does the Apple TV have optical out, will I need to use it?

You don't need a screen to use the Apple TV if you have the remote App on an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

The audio output is for if your sound system is independent of your TV. If a HDMI input will deal with both then you don't need to use it.
