I would like to replace my aging windows htpc but media center just works awesome. I have a cable card tuner so I can watch tv from my cable provider, plus it can record shows. I realize I would probably have to get another tuner , does the apple tv 4 have this capability. Does the apple tv 4 read off external harddrives?

Yes and no

You can't plug an external HD directly in to the ATV, it would need to be on your network, then you would need another app to access the "NAS" - something like Mr MC, Infuse (my fave) or VLC

I *think* the Channels app lets you watch your cable channels on the ATV, but I could be wrong, it's a different setup here in the UK

they do have the ability to receive a over the air stream from a tuner. man..so scratch this idea. I guess I will build another windows based system.

Also, look up CCI flags, i believe WMC is the only one that can handle them.
so depending on how many channels your cable company locks down, you might not be able to do much with other options.

i do believe that silicon dust is working on a tuner that will deal with them, and send an MP4 stream out, but not sure.

ooo I see xbox one s, but its still too freaking big. looks a little bigger than a nuc. I want to hide this behind the tv.

Plex, they are adding DVR with their latest beta release. The best thing about it is that it's available everywhere, I use it with Playstation 4, Mac (the main server), Apple TV 4, iPhone, iPad & a Galaxy A5.
