Hi, I have a second gen Apple TV 4K and YouTube is not showing videos in hdr how supposedly claim to do. Anybody has a solution? And no to force the Apple TV in hdr through the settings is not a solution. In my fire tv stick max plays normal the hdr videos.

YouTube doesn’t support Dynamic Range matching, not much you can do other than force it until Google actually make the app compatible and that’s if they ever will.
The same issue with frame rate matching which used to work before they updated the app to the newer version we have now.

Have to use HDR10 for your matched content, not Dolby Vision for playing HDR YouTube content. Surprised no one answered this.

I searched for this topic because I’m having the same issue. I have a gen 1 Apple TV 4K and a 2021 Sony X95J 4K tv.

Apple TV set to 4K SDR 60Hz and frame and content rates set to match. My YouTube settings set up play highest resolution.

YouTube will not play HDR on the Apple TV. It will play in HDR when I use the YouTube app on the Sony TV.

I suppose you could set the Apple TV to HDR or Dolby Vision to play HDR on YouTube, but then that would blow out any SDR content.

As already mentioned in response to the OP YouTube doesn’t support dynamic range or frame rate matching.
Also I don’t believe the 1st Gen ATV4K is capable of playing YouTube videos in 4KHDR.

The first gen ATV 4K won’t play 4K HDR YT videos no matter what you do. Just watch YT on your Sony TV. My Sony Bravia does a great job with YT 4K HDR.

YT sucks now anyway because they put so darn many commercials in them then try to extort a lot of money from you to make the videos commercial free.

ETA Feb 22: Oops, I misread the OP as 1st gen ATV rather than the 2nd gen ATV. As I understand it, YT won't support the chips in the 1st gen ATV as far as HDR goes, but they supposedly will support the chips in the 2nd gen ATV, but I think the two companies are still not on the same page, so to speak. After all, Apple and Google are arch-enemies/competitors, and there is a lot of animosity between them.

This is unfortunately the only thing you can do unless google starts to play nice with the native settings of the Apple TV. They are more than aware of the issue as many people have complained to them about it, but I guess it's not a priority for them.
