Not sure this needs to be fixed by Apple since LG CX TVs have that problem with other devices as well including their own UHD players. If Apple did anything about it, it would be a workaround at best but still not fix other source devices for LG.

I didn't think it was just LGs that are effected?

Aside from the usual HDMI quirks, it's only LG. Sony were affected, but they've worked with Dolby to resolve the issue (at least on those models where the hardware allowed a fix). TCL had black level issues, but that was due to HDMI and the difference between full and video levels.

Vincent Teoh suggests that the raised black issue is fixed on the new model

I´m glad... and sad. Glad because its finally fixed, but sad because probably this means it cannot be fixed on the original ATV4K because is a hardware issue. Hoping the next software updates "port" the fix unto the previous model.

Yes and no, the new Apple TV is using a different HDMI transceiver. Possibilities are limited for "resellers" such as LG, Sony and Apple. That's why Sony was able to fix it on some models and not on others. That's why LG apparently can't fix the problem with their own UHD players. Just look at the mess Yamaha is going through right now. Or the famous issue with OSD and DV content.

Then, I wish there was an easy way of disabling DV on the ATV4K without forcing HDR10. Oh well...

What do you mean? You can disable both if you want to. I am not following what you are saying

Jason

As far as I know, if you have dynamic range matching enabled you can´t tell the ATV to ignore DV and switch to HDR10 instead. You have to go to settings, disable dynamic range matching, manually select HDR10, watch the content, and then change it back to 4K SDR and re-enable dynamic range matching. Not exactly ideal.

Although there is some info on the black level fixes in this link, the overall discussion has nothing to do with the raised black issue.
They are discussing colour accuracy and calibration, on the ATV4K RGB high is the most accurate setting for SDR content, on the TV you must match this with black level low.

On the Raised blacks, my findings are exactly that of Vincent's video above its fixed but not 100%, I would say 99.9% its massively improved that it is no longer an issue.

Just noticed this over the past few days with DV content on my Sony X9000F and TERRIBLE DV quality in Netflix and Disney+

I only got my ATV in the last 6 months, so shelling out on another one just seems backwards when the built in apps work fine in DV. Will wait for more testing before trying to get a refund under the 2 year EU warranty as the device isn't functioning correctly ultimately.

I'm just watching in 4K SDR at the moment, I'll watch DV on BR until I figure out what to do.

Ah, so this isn´t an issue with just the Apple TV 4K 2017 and the LG OLEDS?. Interesting. The problem is caused by the apple tv itself then?. That is, the raised blacks/murky gray filter over the picture happens with every tv?.

Yeah I've been looking into it for the past 2 hours. I watched Kate on Netflix and the Mrs sand "This is so dark" I never saw it until I tried to watch Captain Marvel this morning.

I went back and forth between Captain Marvel and Kate in 4K SDR, 4k HDR and DV on ATV then used the built in Sony Netflix and Disney+ Apps and it was clear that this is the ATV. There are a tonne of questions in Reddit, Apple Community and AVSForms about raised blacks.

Bit of a headache which all arose because I was trying to figure out why Disney+ has no Atmos in the UK! Then I opened a can of worms :(

Ah, but if your issue is that DV is darker over HDMI (a problem i believe that happens with certain sony tv´s and several external devices over hdmi, not just the apple tv) than using the internal apps of the TV, then is a different problem that the raised/grayish blacks. In this case, the overall picture brightness/luminance is OK, but the black levels are elevated, making the picture look washed out.

What is this problem? I have a 2021 ATV4K and a Sony X900H and I have this, DV from the ATV is darker than the one from the internal apps. Like DV bright on the ATV is like DV dark from internal apps. I can't understand how to fix this
