Hi

I have had my Apple TV 4K unit working for a week now with my new LG 4K TV.

Content matching working beautifully and selecting HDR or Dolby Vision. I have it set to 4K SDR 60Hz.

Now, all of a sudden this evening, it will not select HDR at all. I tried setting it to HDR and also Dolby Vision and although the menu is washed out, the TV says that I have an HDR source.

However, as soon as I go to any movies from iTunes, it turns off HDR when they play and then back on again when I stop the film. It’s like it’s working backwards lol.

Other sources that switch are working perfectly.

I have rebooted the Apple TV twice now and it is still exactly the same.

Has anyone else had the same issue or have any suggestions. I am running TVOS 11.2.5.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have an answer, sorry.

Could you share some of the troubleshooting you've done with the appletv?
-Swap cables?
-use the cable going to the ATV with another HDR source?
-changed input to the TV?
-does the ATV allow switching to HDR in settings?

I have my ATV 4K set to 4K SDR 60Hz like yourself. On more than 1 occasion it has somehow changed itself to 4K HDR 60Hz which I then had to go into settings and switch back. I haven't figured out why it does this yet. Perhaps during software update or when playing HDR material, I just can't figure it out. When this has happened to me, it behaves just as you have described until I set it back to 4K SDR.

Hi

I have an update and have discovered what was causing the issue. I have had a new TV which is edge lit and not OLED and one of the annoying “features” is local dimming which adjusts the edge lighting to try and improve black levels.

However, on dark scenes in particular, if you have a small area of light, then the whole area of the panel from top to bottom lights up and creates these weird artefacts. I had turned this off and calibrated ny screen so that it didn’t do this, however, what I didn’t realise was that this was a specific requirement for HDR.

Turning off local dimming, disables HDR as I assume that without it, there isn’t the required dynamic range.

I am in the process of trying to return the screen and getting an OLED instead. Loads more money, but I realise why now.

Thanks anyway
