So, I won't be upgrading my primary TV from 1080p until January or February. I did however have a nice Apple Store gift card from trading in my iPhone 6s to get an X. So...I decided I'd go ahead and pick up the Apple TV 4K I was going to get anyway.

I am disappointed by a feature it might be lacking, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something: It can auto switch between 60Hz and 24Hz...but only with 4K?!?!?! Why they didn't include this for 1080p is beyond me. Very disappointing until I upgrade my TV.

It can not autoswitch anything at the moment.
This feature will be in tvOS 11.2 which is still in beta today.

Yes, I updated to the latest dev beta and now have it working. Thank you. It doesn’t work with all apps (i.e. Plex), but hopefully it will soon.

As has been stated in other posts, Apple's implementation works for apps that use tvOS standard media player.
Apps, that use their own, need to be updated by their developers. Hopefully they can keep their release cycle close to the OS's.

it does work with 1080p tv's… I play 1080p24 blu ray rips in Infuse on an Apple TV 4K with a 1080p tv all the time. Since Infuse 5.6.2 with tvOS 11.2 beta, my Kuro automatically switches to 24 Hz or 60 Hz depending the content.
