My Apple TV 4K Short Review.

27492774107_b2dbbe6edc_h_d.jpg

I just get it 2 days ago and finally I can view all my iTunes Movies from all my 3 accounts - USA, UK and Malaysia.

Pros
  • Interface - Extremely beautiful and easier to use, especially changing the subtitle and also audio of full dynamic range or reduce loud sounds. This reduce loud sounds is very useful especially for watching at night time. Nearly all apps is follow standard design (except Google product - YouTube).
  • Performance - Superb smooth with fancy emboss effect. Also no performance issue playing heavy 3D games with accelorometer support remote control.
  • Contents - A lots of title to purchase or rent from Movies iTunes with some 4K HDR title.
  • Video Quality - The only support Dolby Vision type of HDR, auto switch of HDR & SDR content and also frame rate. Thanks for this device support of SDR in RGB High and HDR in Chroma 4.2.2, the output is absolutely stunning.
  • Accounts - Support multiple accounts and easier to direct switching. Thanks to this I can anytime switch between USA, UK and Malaysia account. Able to purchase contents from USA or UK by purchase iTunes Gifts Cards from 3rd party source.
  • Movies iTunes Quality - HD quality is closed to Blu-ray and 4K HDR quality is closed to 4K Blu-ray.
Cons
  • Sound Support - No Dolby Atmos support. Some user mentioned cannot pass-through but after I read it seems due to legacy AV receiver issue. I don't own any and cannot comment much as I can't test it.
  • Setting - Default setting by Apple is wrong and not output optimal result. For example Apple is set force everything output to HDR, this is wrong and shall change switch to HDR only when required.
  • Siri Support - It is cool but too bad it only work in few country and not yet support Malaysia.
  • Maximum Usage - You need iTunes USA account to enjoy more variety Movies especially some title in USA is 4K HDR but in Malaysia still only HD. Also TV Shows iTunes is not support in Malaysia yet. https://support.apple.com/en-my/HT204411
  • Weight - It is consider very heavy for such small device and not for carry around.

It's lovely to see people's reviews at anytime. Not relevant that ATV 4K was released 9 months ago as it's continuously being developed and updated! I'm looking forward to reviews of it in late September when Atmos has been implemented!

It's awesome how much time and development Apple is giving to it although, they always should have done as it's a nice business model to sell iTunes content! And my gosh, iTunes content truly shines on it!

If I buy 9 months ago probably I will regret and my review is not like now because 9 months ago everything is playback at HDR and cannot auto switch which for me is very bad.

I am happy I buy it 9 months later, in this part also proof Apple always listen and do improvement and 9 months is not very old and it is still the latest Apple TV and one of the best in market now. :)

ABSOLUTELY! It's a truly evolving product. Apple are putting a HUGE amount of effort into it!

Sadly the kind of films that I really love (non Hollywood) are only available in HD but the Apple TV does an amazing job of upscaling to 4K :) I'm very very happy with the end result :)
Really hoping that 'Moonlight' gets the 4K HDR file here in the UK - I believe that it's a different distributor than in the USA which has it in 4K HDR. It's a beautifully shot piece of art.

I've added movies to my 4k iTunes library by buying the BluRay version that includes an iTunes digital code. Unfortunately, some studios have choices that only work with Google Play, Vudu, or movies anywhere.

That’s no problem, as long as you got a Movies Anywhere Account and have iTunes, Google Play and Vudu linked to it then providing they’re from supporting studios those movies will appear in your iTunes account.

Yup, really hope Apple can standardize the 4K format for all region.

Now I need at least maintain 2 iTunes ID, one my local country ID and another US ID to get the title I want in 4K format.

Thanks for suggest moonlight, will check it out. :)

The problem is Movies Anywhere must register inside US. It can use outside US but registration must inside US.

Do you might help me register it. If ok I will pm you my email. Password just simply put and let me know later. :)

Try registering with a free vpn to mimic a usa IP address?
All try, won't work. It block register over VPN. I had try many types of VPN where earlier stage is working but now seems none of the VPN is working.

The only chances let me use it is somebody from US help me register it. :)

Just like to add-on and share additional information on 3 types of Video Streaming Devices I own in common apps support. :)

Some apps required sideload.

Movies iTunes Play in others device only applicable for US iTunes account on selected participant movie company in Movies Anywhere.

Sorry for some is related for Malaysia or Asia country only. For example AOTG and Unifi TV apps is Malaysia iptv company apps. iFlix is Asia streaming apps. Play Movies currently only support up to 1080p in Malaysia.

In summary, they is no perfect video streaming devices. :)

WOW Lots of demands there Andrew.
As someone who loves the Apple Ecosystem, the Apple TV is 100% perfect for me. Having Apple TV 4K matching the frame rate of a film is truly perfect!
As with anyone online - just remember to download ANYTHING that you buy at least once and keep that backup. It's rare for things to get pulled from libraries BUT it does happen. It happens a lot in the MUSIC section were you buy a deluxe version of the album with music videos on. I bought a Jackson Waters album a few years ago and I've noticed recently that the album has been updated with the music video missing along with Acoustic versions (which was why I bought it) Sadly those missing items ARE NOT on the iCloud. Also happened a few weeks ago to GEORGE MICHAEL 'FAITH' deluxe album with music videos. It got pulled!
Not sure how the 4k Dolby Vision of iTunes will work in a few years since you can't download 4K film. What is worrying is that Apple thinks that 5 years in their product lifeline is an eternity. Hope people's 4K films don't disappear in 5 years time.

Actually among the 3, the most perfect is Apple TV 4K, the only miss for me is the YouTube not in 4K HDR.

After 5 years, maybe the film get update to 8K. Haha! The very good part is Apple sometimes added extra contents or upgrade for you FOC. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about YouTube not being in 4K HDR, with AV1 being agreed upon, YouTube will replace VP9 with AV1 and that's when you'll start to see YouTube in 4K HDR on the Apple TV 4K and Safari. Exciting times with AV1.

Haha yes to 8K no doubt with the AV1 compression so it won't be taxing on the broadband :) Most extreme sports films are shot in 8K using Phantom cameras :) Works great for mixing down to 4K or 1080p.
They'll need a more reliable alternative to WiFi though although maybe by that time we'll be using some kind of mobile broadband 24/7. It's not just the rural areas that can't receive fibre - apartments in some cities are an example. In my city where a company has the monopoly, it can't fit fibre to its 2008 built £1million apartments! They are stuck with 18mbps MAX for life. How absurd is that!!!!!!!
