Yesterday I updated my original ATV 4K and ever since I’ve been having a very irritating issue with video quality. It will play fine for maybe thirty minutes and then switches video quality to something that looks worse than very highly compressed 480p. Network conditions have not changed and everything else in my home is fine. It’s connected by WiFi but this has never been a problem before the update.

Nothing fixes it except restarting the device from the settings menu. After which it will play fine for another half an hour and then pop, it’s gone again. Feels like a bug. Anyone else?

I have 4 4K ATVs and haven't seen a problem, but then all my ATVs are wired.

Things to consider.

1. What streaming service/app are you using?
2. Who is your ISP and what connection speeds?
3. Which wifi band (2.4 or 5 GHz)?
4. Is there a lot of wifi congestion where you are?

Internet is 350Mb 10ms ping and the router handles both frequencies. The LAN easily handles 2160p HDR10 files streaming locally at 150Mb/s to the Apple TV over the same connection, so I’m confident that isn’t an issue. At the moment I have only noticed this while streaming 1080p iTunes content from Apple, and quite literally directly after updating. I will try Plex later or tomorrow ?

Boring, I know, but I don’t like leaving topics open ended as it can be frustrating for people who stumble upon them while searching for similar issues at a later date. Turned out this was probably a problem with Apple’s servers in my region. Internet connection remained rock solid throughout, and Plex was able to run perfectly even at high bit rates served over my LAN. In any case it’s now resolved so I’m chalking up the update thing as a coincidence ?
