Apple TV 4K - tvOS 18 breaks DD5.1 for some users.

How often do apple work on releasing updates for tvos?. Went on to check last night….nothing. Are we talking potentially months for a fix?.

I'm on 18.1 beta release. No DD for me with that either. So based on nothing other than my own pessimism, I think it's going to be months. If ever:rolleyes::(

Horray, it‘s fixed in the newest tvOs 18.1 developer beta
Forgive my ignorance, but is the developer beta different to the one available as a public beta? I signed up to the public beta. I’m on 18.1 and it didn’t fix it for me so I’m hoping you’re on a ‘newer’ 18.1.

18.1 beta 22J5567a i downloaded today also fixed it for me, I’m not a developer. Let’s hope it won’t be broken again with next update. Maybe I’ll just turn off beta and automatic updates for now.

The 4th seed came out today and can confirm that it fixed the 5.1 issue.

DD 5.1 has actually been way better for me on 18.1
On 17.x, it would sound corrupted randomly, requiring me to pause and unpause whatever I was watching to fix it. Sometimes it would happen once, sometimes it would happen like 10 times. This hasn't happened to me yet since updating to 18.0

Just updated, and 5.1 is back for me when change format is selected. Happy with that🙂 Thanks for the heads up. Turning off auto updates as I type😂

I have Apple TV 4K 1st and 2nd Generation. After upgrading to 18.1 Dolby Atmos is broken on the Prime Video app. It is the same on both devices. Dolby Vision is outputted fine. Just Prime Video seems to have this issue.

I signed up for beta software updates with Apple. The first beta version I downloaded didn't give me a fix, but a newer release a couple of days ago seems to have done the trick so that should carry through to the official public release of 18.1 if you'd rather wait for that:)

Hallelujah! tvOS 18.1 Public Beta build 22J5567a has restored DD5.1 output on my 1st Gen ATV 4K 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Not only that, but I used to get a static type click/pop when my Vizio soundbar would receive the DD5.1 signal and that has seemingly been resolved as well!

ATV 4K > hdmi > LG C1 > optical > Vizio s4251wb4

Glad to hear this looks to be resolved, and in record time! (IIRC, the last 5.1 bug took 6 months to fix!)

I updated to the latest 18.1 public beta and it did not fix it for me.

I have to have Change Format on for 5.1 to work. But if I do that, I can’t get Atmos which has not been affected in any updates. I don’t want to have to choose between 5.1 or Atmos or change settings every time I watch something.

I contacted Apple Support yesterday and was told:

Upon checking my resources, Apple is aware of the issue and that it is currently under review. Apple doesn't yet completely understand the issue. Therefore, Apple can't promise a solution or predict when an investigation will finish.

Here in your case, I recommend you to keep your device up to date as the resolution may come in the form of an update.

Unfortunately, the reality is that Apple is a forward-looking company and spends the vast majority of their efforts in support of the latest tech (this means spatial audio and Dolby Atmos for immersive audio). Due to the popularity of 5.1 sound bars, I expect they will fix this bug eventually. However, I would expect support for older formats and devices to continue to erode over time. (5.1, optical, downloads vs streaming, etc.)

is this affecting all generations of Apple TV 4Ks or is it just gen 1?

I’m running the newest gen box, my setups 3.1 from a LG GX1 soundbar, along with a G3. After latest update im getting nothing sound wise through the HDMI setting on soundbar/tv after Tvos update. Just tv speakers the now unfortunately which sound horrendous after listening to high definition sound for so long. Highly annoying.

Done latest update and still no sound atall through E-ARC channel. This is beyond frustrating and i feel like just taking the apple tv back. Cant see it being the sound bar. My only means of testing this is through an amazon firestick.

Can anyone confirm that 18.1 retained the DD 5.1 fix from the beta release? I'm nervous about upgrading to 18.1 given I'm running the beta release with the bug fix and I want to confirm it's still fixed in 18.1. Thanks

Hi, Apple TV 1st Gen here. I updated a couple of days ago and so far all seems good. The only caveat I would add is that prior to 18.0, Auto on my system gave me Atmos, but if something was in 5.1 I had to use the change format option to force DD5.1. I never thought anything of it believing that was 'just how it worked.' Having followed this subject both here and on the Apple forums, it seems that maybe Auto should have been giving me PCM 5.1. It didn't, and after 18.1 it still doesn't. But for me at least, things are working as they were before 18 so I'm happy.

something seems to have broken again, but i'm not sure when. i have an older receiver with spdif and so i have the AppleTV attached to the TV via HDMI, and the TV connected to the receiver with spdif (toslink). i noticed this morning i had no audio at all unless i set change format to "stereo". i attempted to convince my TV and receiver to use ARC over a 2nd HDMI connection between the TV and the receiver but i just couldn't get that to work.

amongst all the fiddling, somehow i managed to get audio over the optical cable again but despite change format/5.1, i'm getting stereo audio at the receiver.

at this point i'm wondering if i should just invest in a new receiver that can handle 4k and connect the appleTV to the receiver and then the receiver to the TV via hdmi. that i guess would at least allow newer audio formats to work with my 5.1 speaker setup.

Yes - you want Atmos support one way or another. And an AVR is by far the most stable, flexible, and longest lasting option. Expect ongoing issues with 5.1 and optical moving forward as companies (Apple especially) focus their priorities on supporting the latest Atmos products and technologies.

i guess the only "problem" with this is that i've ripped all my BDs and 4kBDs with 5.1 audio since that's all i ever needed. so i'll have to redo all of those. but i guess i'll see a benefit immediately from the various streaming services.

but yeah, i need to do this.
