Kind of strange here...my Fiancee and I have an account each....simple you'd think. After the update ( I've only done the one in the lounge so far) it shows that my account is logged into the cloud, and my Fiancee's is logged into the Itunes store?

Just checked for an upgrade this evening. My 3 generation says it is up to date with version 5.3.

I think I'll wait a few weeks for the dust to settle before doing this upgrade.

Yes, they pulled the update. My 5.3 is counted as "up to date". Meanwhile, in Cupertino, CA, a firmware developer position just opened up...

The update on the lounge ATV3 was slow, but all seems well now that I've logged into my accounts..no content is missing, and the unit seems to operate normally.

I then tried to update the bedroom unit ( also ATV3 ) but got the "Software is up to date" message.

Looks to me like they have had issues with some units..particularly ATV2's and have pulled it for now....Glad I haven't turned the lounge unit into a brick:)

Mine is an ATV3. It basically seems to be fine now, except for the one crash I've had... I'm guessing they pulled the update as well, but I wonder if the next update will include other bug fixes as I'm hesitant to update again...

Finally !!

Software auto-update ...... been waiting for this for a long time.

To the extent i've lived a second generation of my life. Oh crud,, now i feel even older.

Good iTunes Radio, and you can Airplay your purchased direct from iCloud instead, which is good.

However they may have wanted to be a bit clearer on this.

"...Apple TV will play content from iTunes in the Cloud instead of your AirPlay device when possible. Requires iOS 7 on AirPlay device. "

Unless Apple meant you need iOS7 in order to airplay.

Everything worked on mine. Restored from iTunes but connected wirelessly instead of a my wired connection. Apple forums seemed to think the problem was tied to the wired connection.

Unfortunately my only option was Best Buy. :(

And No on the $40 hdmi ... AmazonBasics for me (when I can wait for 2 day shipping)

Meant to add that my restored Apple TV 3 is running software 6.0. I must have just grabbed it before they pulled it.

Things I would like to see added to the Apple TV software:
* Amazon Prime Instant Watch
* A discount movie rental section (unless it is movie of the week you have to hunt to find deals)
* Lower prices on movie rentals (knock off about $1 on SD and HD movies and I'll probably never go back to RedBox)
* Introduce a TV episode rental scheme that is reasonable. I don't want to own them, I just want to watch them. "Owning" a movie or a TV episode on a heavily locked down DRM distribution system is kind of an oxymoron.
This thread has turned into a bricked ATV restore thread, so this side-conversation will likely get lost, but I wanted to bump up your comments. I've made some similar suggestions in the past. There's a whole lot of interest in getting an ATV store and/or games onto the ATV platform, but I too would like to see Apple apply more leverage to the studios to improve the movie rental model.

$5 (or whatever it is) for a 24-hour rental window is a problem for me. To be honest, the biggest problem I have is with the 24-hour window. Far too often, I'll pull the trigger to rent something, and my wife or I might fall asleep during the movie. If it's a weeknight, we're in rough shape, because we may not be able to get through the next workday, dinner, etc. and back to finish the movie before the 24-hour window expires. Like you, the idea of buying (for $20 or more) a movie that is DRMed and locked into Apple's ecosystem doesn't appeal tome.

Here are some ideas for improvement off the top of my head:
- Knock $1 off the rental price to better compete with Redbox.
- Increase the rental window to 48 hours and/or let you re-watch a movie you've already rented for just $1 more (for another 24-hour window). Maybe it's $1 to re-watch within the first week, $2 when a week has passed.
- Apply any of your past rental charges towards owning the movie. So, you pay $4-5 to rent it the first time. $1-2 to re-watch it later. Do that a few more times and eventually you own it.

Some of what I've described above is probably a bit too "complicated" so here's a simplified version that I could be happy with:
- $4-5 for initial rental - 48-hour window.
- $1-2 for subsequent rentals (also 48-hour window).
- None of these charges apply towards owning it, but at just $1-2 for subsequent re-rentals, I could live with that.

Add to the mix some promotions like: rent one movie, get another rental for 1/2 price.

Did they yank the update? I can't get it on either of my ATV3s...says it is not available right now all day yesterday and today...

I downloaded the update when it came out. It no longer lets my iTunes library sync. I added a movie into iTunes, and it will not show up on my AppleTV. I've never had an issue with this. I had to watch it on my ATV by using AirPlay in iTunes.

Only thing which bugs me, and I have no idea why Apple did this, but you can play content and back out at any time, while the audio still plays.

This is ok for audio podcasts, but why did Apple do this for video podcats?

Defeats the purpose of watching a video stream, unless you just want an "audio only" version, when one isn't available.

Good thing at least, if you back out while you've paused, it doesn't always show the "Resume","Start at beginning" options, its automatically continues anyway.

First thing i did after update, was add all my favorite podcasts to the "MY podcast" section :)

Update yanked. I got bricked.

Apple TV

I got the same error messages reported by other readers, however, after restoring with iTunes, I unplugged the power cable, waited a few seconds, then plugged it backed in. Apple TV restarted correctly with the new update.

How would you play stuff not bought on iTunes from the Cloud?

I think that was exactly the point of the OP! Yeah, how do you play videos from your NAS, for instance?

Oh, and by the way, you probably misunderstood the question: Nobody was asking for playing videos from Apple's Cloud services when not bought on iTunes! It's all about accessing all your other videos stored elsewhere! Keyword: "Apps for ATV!"

E.g. a Synology App on my ATV which would allow me to access my NAS directly! The possibility to select movies via iPad is quite good - but not perfect, as I still need to fetch a 3rd device (the iPad) for watching my movies, just to put it away as soon as the movie is playing (and yes, Synology NAS are now able to directly stream NAS -> ATV - it's just the movie selection process that requires a damn iDevice in the middle)!
