Hi, I do not have an apple tv yet, but am close to purchasing. I am curious about streaming content from my main computer that is currently responsible for streaming music to an AE via airtunes. If I stream a movie to the apple tv, or any video content for that matter, can I simutaneously stream the audio content to the AE and play the auido through my hifi setup? This will probably be the cincher for my decision making process, my wife is an interior designer and this would justify the purchace b/c NO CORDS! Thanks!

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

You should be able to do this. I'm able to play a movie on host computer while others are watching content streamed from that computer to the AppleTV. It will probably come down to bandwidth and that shouldn't be a problem even with a 802.11G network. You should be good.

Just came across this while trying unsucessfully to get movie audio come out through my AirTunes speakers, according to the article:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3291

"AirTunes can only be used to stream music.",

meaning not the audio track from a video file. If anyone knows otherwise, please share :)

Unfortunately, you can't do what the OP wants to do. I have a similar setup, with an :apple:TV and an Airport Express, and I can confirm that while watching video on the :apple:TV you cannot simultaneously have the audio coming from the Airport Express.

As stated above, you can use the :apple:TV and Airport Express simultaneously as an airtunes destinations for audio (music) only, and that works very nicely. The music coming from both is completely synchronized.

I presume that if you want the audio to come from your hifi while you watch video on your TV, both the hifi and the TV are in the same room. If that's the case what you could do is split the audio signal from the :apple:TV and send it to an aux or monitor (or any other unused) input on your hifi via audio cables. That should give you the same results, no? That's what I do, and it works great.

So can the :apple:TV can output audio through HDMI, analogue and optical sockets simultaneously?

It's a pity you can't get movie sound, I've only got one TV but it'd be nice to be able to hear it while in the kitchen or dining room without blasting it out in the lounge, might even motivate me to get on with the housework! <returns to kitchen before wife gets home from work>
