I'm planning on getting a 65" LG OLED TV in the next year or two, and I see that these all have the Apple TV App along with Airplay 2 built into them. I mainly use my Apple TV for streaming, never played any games with it, nor do I ever plan to. I'm usually watching movies I've purchased on iTunes, and streaming on Hulu, CBS, Youtube, Netflix, ESPN, etc with the occasional music stream over Apple Music. It seems like those non-Apple TV apps are all available on the LG TV's smart TV features anyways.

Would the Apple TV hardware then become obsolete for me? I've got HomePods to cover HomeKit devices throughout the home. I'm always looking for ways to eliminate devices and their associated wires from my media center.

I have a 65 LG C9 and the Apple TV App was a recent update that was added. Works great for streaming 4K. I wouldn't get rid of the Apple TV hardware itself in case you'd like to use it on another TV/Device, or you can always sell it since the app itself makes the hardware obsolete. You won't be disappointed with the LG, I love mine.

The experience on a smart tv is never as fluid and nice. Sometimes you’re looking at a blank display for 10 seconds because you decided to switch apps on tv. It does the job, but it’s not as smooth.
It’s a bit like car infotainment systems vs CarPlay/android auto (or even using your phone for navigation).

I have a C7 with the Prime app. I tested some panning scenes and found that there is a bit of judder which leads me to believe that the app does not support auto frame rate switching. I played the same scenes using the Prime app on the Apple TV and found the same panning scenes were smooth and completely judder-free. There was not difference in picture quality.

Does the C9 currently support frame rate switching? If not, I'm not sure that LG's future OLED will support it either.

I’ve had kind of the same consideration to make; just bought an LG C9 myself, and was wondering wether what I should do with my Apple TV 4: upgrade to the 4K model (or wait for another new version), or simply sell it and don’t upgrade. I decided to go for a third option: I’ll keep it so I can use it with my old tv in my bedroom.

The C9 offers basically everything I used on Apple TV; AirPlay, the Apple TV app, YouTube and Netflix. I’m still hoping for Apple Music to arrive as well, although AirPlay (or even just Bluetooth connection) is a good workaround too!

The C9 is a nice TV!

If you like the iTunes extras, you'll need to watch them with an Apple TV box so I suggest foregoing a new Apple TV box and use the ATV 4 for the extras.

Couple things to note with the C9 ATV app. As of right now, it only supports Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. No Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, or Dolby Atmos audio from iTunes content. Also, it seems to be locked to 60Hz, and doesn't support RealCinema being turned on, so 24p content is always displayed with 3:2 pulldown related judder. Some people notice this more than others. I personally would keep the Apple TV 4K, it's still what I use with my own LG C9.
