A year ago i had to replace my previous media player. My options was apple tv or shield. I discarded apple tv mainly because it dont sends encoded audio to the amp (amp shows LPCM regardless if the source is DD or DTS-X). On the other side, shield was a perfect choice, with its ai upscaling, as i have plenty of 1080p mkvs. Im happy with my choice and im very surprised that even people here says its better. Anyway how about the new apple tv? Still sends decoded LPCM audio?

The Nvidia Shield is nothing short of an outstanding piece of tech. I had been laughing off all the so-called upscaling features for years - until the Shield made me a believer.

Looking forward to the day Apple will be welcoming Nvidia back on board.
I have both the 2019 shield and appletv 4K. The upscaling on the shield still isn’t as good as the appletv. You might not notice it as my friend that has both doesn’t either but I’ve compared my own content back to back and it’s pretty obvious who’s upscaling is better. The appletv just looks better. But the shield can do more so I need both.

Waiting for some douche in Dayton, OH to complain about the Shield remote not being found in the Find My app.

People will complain about opening the shield app to beep and locate the remote. While Apple TV has no option to beep to locate the remote.

Sweet, now 💩TV is on every platform how about some good shows?
I only watched handful of the shows premiered few years ago and now when I looked, its like nothing interesting and its other channels i have to pay or subscribe too...like what!
Just waiting for foundation..n thats it. While netflix is belting out unique movies n shows.

Anyone more in the know about Android TV have an explanation as to why the Apple TV app was available on the "Chromecast with Google TV" and not the Shield when both are running Android TV under the hood?

My assumption is that the Apple TV app on Android TV is a standard .apk file/package and that its ability to run on a different device isn't strictly dictated on a per-device basis. But, clearly there's more to it.

I've found the apps are higher quality on tvOS than on AndroidTV. There is no equivalent to Infuse on AndroidTV.

I've also read that AndroidTV has started to have essentially homescreen ads. I know they can be turned off, but this is a big downside. I just don't trust Google as much.
Nvidia shield doesn’t have Home Screen ads.

They will just use the 2019 chip with AI upscaling.
I believe the “Mariko” Tegra X1 in the Nintendo switch (refresh, red box) and switch lite were already upgraded with the same chip that’s in the new Nvidia shield tv.

Edit: Nintendo took advantage of the newer chip to improve battery life rather than improve performance.

Apple was requiring device by device hardware level DRM integration, at least they were until today.

I thought they used the 2015 in the launch the 2017 in the revision and so it leaves the 2019 for the Pro.

Looking at the possibility of replacing my Apple TV 4K with one of these boxes as I'm growing tired of the ATV Plex app downmixing E-AC3 to PCM 2.0. Only way I can get multi-channel surround from Plex on ATV is to change the audio format to vanilla AC3 Dolby Digital in ATV settings. All my equipment is capable of Dolby Digital Plus. Indeed Apple's own content plays fine in the higher bitrate multi-channel format. It's just the Plex app on this device that doesn't work properly. This means I have to keep switching audio settings when I use Plex.

Would Plex on the Nvidia resolve this problem, I wonder. Anyone care to pass comment?

why plex? i use plex only as last resource. i have kodi on shield, where i have endless options, in living room, and plex on samsung tv in bedroom (where plex its the ONLY option)

I like Plex. The app just doesn’t seem to work properly on Apple TV. Some say it‘s a limitation with the device itself but I’m unsure about this since Apple content is ok.

plex is good for standard use (stereo, 5.1 AC3) but once you go up (DTS hd, atmos, etc) its problematic on almost all devices. Tried on ps4, shield, samsung tv. on both shield and ps4 (connected to AVR) there were issues. i kept it only on that bedroom tv as i only needed stereo audio from tv speakers, and only because its the only app of this type on tizen. in fact every plex version (for different devices) have its own limitations. the only unlimited versions are those for pc/mac. anyway, from what i know best media player for atv is infuse. ive tried it once on iphone and its fantastic. however on atv it send encoded audio (avr shows LPCM, instead of the actual codec used), so i opted for a shield+kodi

Thanks very much for the info. I will add that I’ve read reports of Plex E-AC3 multi-channel working fine on Nvidia, so perhaps I should consider buying one and, if it doesn’t work as expected, then try Kodi as per your recommendation.

To be fair, vanilla AC3 is hardly bad, and I have a pretty high-end bi-amped AV separates system that makes anything sound fabulous, so there’s no real cause for complaint. Nevertheless it’s definitely not ideal knowing that it could sound even better with Plex on ATV.

In any case, thanks for your input so far. Much appreciated and you’ve given me much to think about ?

Were you experiencing audio issues specifically with the shield? Normally when set to bitstream it should be pretty reliable (I have seen AV sync issues before due to rewind, forward or intro skip).

Having done a bit of reading on Kodi, it's not going to work in my home setting as I have a central server (Mac) connected to two NAS boxes on my LAN serving files from a unified library to multiple clients. Kodi seems to be more of a single device solution unless I'm mistaken.

For now I think I'll stick with my current setup and "put up" with vanilla 5.1 for my Plex viewing.

You’re right in that it was originally a local player. There are plugins for Kodi however one of which makes for a very convincing Plex client experience. I can’t remember the name of the plug-in off head but should turn up in searches fairly quickly.

I also use a Nas with a dedicated Plex server and the plug-in worked fine in that scenario when I tried a few years ago.

never. anyway, bitstream (encoded audio) its the only option if you use an AVR. yes u can send decoded audio but only a fool will do it.

dunno, i use NFS server on mac. i think u can setup the same server on nas and use with kodi
