Google today announced that the Apple TV app will be rolling out to the new Chromecast with Google TV dongle starting early next year, and to more devices powered by the Android TV operating system in the future.

With the addition of the Apple TV app, Chromecast with Google TV users will be able to access Apple TV+ with a subscription, as well as their library of movie and TV show purchases from Apple and content from Apple TV channels.

This marks Google's second partnership with Apple this month, following Apple Music rolling out to Google Assistant-enabled smart speakers and displays like the Nest Audio, Nest Hub Max, and Nest Mini in the United States and select other countries.

The Apple TV app has been rolling out to a wide variety of platforms in recent months, including the PlayStation, Xbox, and Roku.

It feels odd how they've been pushing TV app, airplay and HomeKit to so many TVs, devices, etc yet we still have relatively expensive and old TV devices for sale.

They need a clear direction on what they want to do with the TV at this point. I almost wonder if they're thinking about discontinuing it once they really have TV+ everywhere. I hope not though.

I understand some people game on their ATV, but as a streamer there really isn't much more you can ask for (DV, 4K, and ATMOS are all present).

Like others have mentioned, the price is ridiculous. $129/$99 should be the top end of these devices. If they add a M1 chip and that vastly improves gaming, sure the price is justified.

Forget the Apple TV+ app, can we have a lower price Apple TV dongle? A $79 or $99 dongle that has no/limited storage would be most welcome. Not all of us need 32GB of storage for games
I’m beginning to believe that opportunity ship set sail long ago n Apple missed it. All these smart TV deals leads me to think a dedicated hardware AppleTV device is gone forever. :( I’m hoping I’m wrong.

My opinion: they need to sell the Apple TV at a loss and make it more accessible to people. If it was only $80 or hell...even $100 people wouldn’t really think twice. It would be fairly expensive, but you’d see the benefits and justify it.
At almost $200? Yeah you gotta be deep into Apple (like me) to take the plunge.

NikkeiNews says a new AppleTV is coming in 2021 per supply chain rumors and there have been plenty of rumors and claims about one with a more powerful SoC (A12 or A14) on the way, so maybe at the March Services Event we will see it.

Excellent news.

Apple really needs to fix the branding though. I can’t count the number of people I talk to IRL or on Twitter who think you need an”Apple TV” or other Apple device to watch “Apple TV+”. I wish Apple would call the TV devices something else, like Apple Home or Apple Hub.

Yeah the Apple TV hardware is done for. Can’t see why Apple would do this if they plan to release a new Apple TV.

This is great news! I Have been wondering about this. Just bought a Google TV Chromecast for my parents

I think you're right. They were onto something 5-7 years ago, but they blew it by charging way too much while underdelivering. The TV App Store never really took off, at least nothing innovative came out of it. And by that time Google launched its much cheaper Chromecast. Why would anybody buy ATV hardware that costs 15x more?

My TV/Internet provider uses TV Setup boxes based on Android. You get the full TV experience, and the Google Play store with all its apps. It's perfect: responsive, smooth, great remote, etc.

They also provide an ATV app for Apple fans, but honestly the entire experience is not so great. On Android, TV is the central focus and smart features are a layer on top of it. While on ATV it's more of an app focused approach where I have to think of launching/quitting apps. And then there's that horrible remote control. Whatever Steve Jobs had in mind when he had his eureka moment on the future of television, I doubt this is it.

I think Apple TV hardware is going to go the same route as the Apple Airport Base Station (as did Apple branded printers). Apple will claim "it's on every platform" and "we're not going to be involved in a race to the bottom". Then, they will sunset the hardware.

I agree. I still can't get over the fact that they have 2 storage options (of which a user has no way to see or manage storage) for a $20 difference in price. Of all companies, Apple is best at simplifying options for users. The number of times I've had friends / family ask which they should purchase...

I have newer TVs that have decent UIs, but I still prefer a dedicated TV myself. The whole UI is much more polished, smooth and in 4K as well.

With so many 'dumb' TVs, a small cheaper dongle makes sense.

Heck even my 'smart' 2018 Sony can't and won't be able to run AppleTV+ app because it can't run Android TV 9.0.

Casting content via Airplay2 should be seamless in 2020, but it isn't. But I'm not going to drop $200 on an expensive AppleTV device.

Not likely. Apple already released apps on a ton of smart TVs and devices like Roku and Amazon. Not sure why Chromecast is somehow the Apple TV death knell more than Roku was.

Now finally I can explore my free year of Apple TV+. Unable to cast, I have not bothered to even look at what's in TV+ even thought I've had it free for months now.

That's really good news, because the 50 dollar Chromecast is such a better device than the 170 dollar Apple TV.
As someone who's only owned one chromecast, and returned it after a week, what does it do that Apple TV doesn't?
Doesn't it require a personal device to "cast" the video from? Or does it have a regular menu system with apps like ATV and Roku have?

I can think of at least a few reasons:
  • You moved to Android. If you bought Apple content, it's nice to be able to take it with you elsewhere.
  • People talk about Apple's lock-in and antitrust, if their content is at least available on other platforms, it's a harder case to make.
  • Diversification of revenue stream. Apple is ultimately a hardware company but subscriptions are Apple's fastest growing revenue source.
  • More subscribers on Apple TV = more shows to be produced. it's hard to get producers on your platform if no one's seeing it. Plenty of people think they need an Apple device to get watch Apple TV but that's not the case.

FWIW It's probably is over due for an Apple TV price cut or a new model. I'm not sure why Apple keeps selling the ancient 4th gen AppleTV for $149 especially when you can just get the 4K for $30 more. There was a time when the 4th gen was on sale for $99, might be time to make that price permanent. I wouldn't be surprised to see an $80 or so price cut coming soon on both models.
