But all I want for my living room TV is the ability to stream my iTunes movies without needing to fiddle with my phone.

Personally, I Cast (preferred) or AirPlay 2 my streams because I can't stand navigating a native TV app no matter the platform.

Found our opposite preferences funny. I too have a 4th gen  TV currently not even connected to a TV but only to serve as a HomeKit hub.

Well shoot, that’s awesome. I was considering buying an AppleTV 4K for my Vizio as I’m not a huge fan of AirPlaying content to the TV, but this would negate that purchase.
Funny, my first thought was "oh, another feature to ignore on my Vizio TV". I just use the ATV4K for everything.

We were seriously thinking of buying a 2019 Sony 950G, but nothing we could find indicates they have delivered Airplay 2 firmware upgrade yet and it was announced this time last year. Did we miss something?

I got the Airplay/HomeKit update in early Dec last month for my 77 A9G Oled. So far, works really well.

I am still waiting for an update on A9G too, last thing I heard that update was pulled back because of some bugs.

Also wondering if the Apple TV app will support 4k with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on Sony TVs.

It was pulled back, I just happen to get it before they pulled it back. I have not noticed any issues, so not sure why they pulled it. I do get no sound when switching inputs at times, so maybe that is why they pulled it?

Hope it supports 4k and Dolby too. I would think it would.

That is closer my my view. I had heard that there was a plan for it on Roku boxes, but did not even realize it had shipped on my Roku TV until I had to check for this thread. :)

I have an X950G in the United States and received the update in mid-December and it works pretty well. It was really poorly communicated, though.

I brought a X950G in New Zealand before Christmas, updated to the latest firmware but no Airplay/Home yet. Not too fussed as using the AppleTV 4K anyway :)

No mention of lach of chrome cast support anywhere? I feel like they are missing a huge area. I had to sit and watch all of Morning show on my ipad as my TV's support chromecast and not airplay.

I'm not interested in watching the others shows on the smalls creens

Knowing my luck it probably will not work with Vizio TV I bought last month. Can't remember the model but it does Homekit and Airplay2 and is 4K HDR. No AppleTV+ or DisneyPlus yet. The only reason I bought over a Hisense (which happens to have both services) was because I needed a 40" model that would fit in a particular unit and Costco didn't have anything else that small... not a big deal since I paid $289 CAD for it which makes is seem even more silly paying $229 CAD for an AppleTV 4K by itself.

I guess this could be useful if one of my atv's fails.

For the non-apple users, this may open their options to future atv sales maybe?

I am looking at the Sony 85" with built in Apple TV but want to know what will be different with my Harmony Elite remote and or apple TV remote. I have always hated the way the menu works on Apple TV and having to key in long passwords and movies names when searching but none the less have to use for Netflix prime and appleTV+ etc. Question is will my remote and menu experiences be the same or will it same me some switching and or steps. I fail to see how it will because I use the TV as a monitor rather than the apps.

Use your iOS devices for this with the AppleTV Remote App in Control Center. Copy/Paste straight to them that way.

Keep in mind that that's a built-in app that's equivalent to the TV app in tvOS, it's not an entire built-in Apple TV. It's mostly a way to watch Apple's TV+ service, and movies/shows purchased from Apple.

Is the Apple TV app on Sony TV’s now? And is it only select ones if so is there a list?

I’ve been waiting/hoping for it to come to mine but no such luck yet

If your tv supports HomeKit and Airplay it’ll likely support the Apple TV app. Disney+ landed on my 2016 Vizio a couple months ago... still waiting on the Apple TV app though. My Amazon Fire Stick got the Apple TV app already so I guess Vizio (not Apple) are the ones slowing things down.
