My worry about OLEDs is the burn in, given that so many shows emblazon their stupid logos somewhere on the screen/image, usually the same place (for each network). I really want the deep blacks, but the thought of having to worry how long the tv might last before I would have no choice but to replace it bothers me. Although, those prices you mentioned are ridiculously low considering what these tvs were just last year!

Burn-in is definitely an issue on my LG B6 OLED TV purchased at the end of 2016. I hadn't thought about burn-in when I bought it - I wish I had. I now have a few logos burned-into the bottom third of my screen :(

My next TV will likely be a Samsung QLED (Q90R) - not as nice as OLED, but getting closer (and no burn-in issues)

I'm sorry to hear that. I want to believe (LOL) that OLED burn-in has been overstated, but I know that's not realistic due to the current phosphor technology limitations. Though I have read that they (LG) have solved the problem—but it will take a few years to come to market.

As for QLED...I don't trust Samsung to be forthright or accurate in their product offerings. First: I think that their QLED-tech is overly hyped and basically equivalent to what other manufacturers are calling 'MicroLED with Quantum Dot technology' (roughly stated). I mean, they are not quantum-light-emitting-diodes.

And even the 'QLED' is meant to confuse the average consumer who probably immediately thinks 'oh, this is just like OLED(!), but maybe better or newer.'

As to why Samsung does not sell OLED tvs: it is known in the industry that they (Samsung) have been unsuccessful in scaling up their small-screen technology to large panels such as are used for televisions. They had so many quality problems and unusable panels that they decided to simply go the route of not competing with the same technology which LG actually does quite well, but to create a seemingly commensurate competitor in 'QLED.' I believe that the other manufacturers who sell OLEDS are using LG panels. Sony does.

Second, I absolutely do not want any Samsung software (and hardware controlled by their software) anywhere in my home. Everyone is data-mining us and profiling us for advertising and other marketing purposes (and much more than that as well)—I understand that probably all of the tv manufacturers are up to the same tricks, but my feeling is that Samsung is one of the worst in the business, not only in tvs but in their other industrial areas of manufacture. And did I mention, thoroughly corrupt and involved in that huge South Korean governmental bribery scandal a few years ago (that involved their President)? The same family is basically still in control of the company.

TLDR: My next tv will be another LG. But likely a MicroLED with quantum dot tech. I also like their tv software very much.

Firmware update is not showing in Japan yet.
Also waiting for homekit and airplay 2, no signs of that.

Nothing in the UK for the Sony XG950 yet. Talked to Sony just this week they were very non-committal about Airplay 2 and the App being available this year; I noticed they have removed mentions of Airplay 2 from their promotional material including website listings for my TV - the mentions were there when I purchased only a few weeks ago...

Nice - thinking of moving from my 60 Kuro to the 77 A9G. Is Airplay available now too on the A9G?
Not yet. I'm starting to loose hope about homekit/airplay2 on Sony TVs... but AppleTV.app release gives me new hope about that.

Yea, homekit/airplay2 were removed from the specs on sony.com a few months ago... but remain here... Sony Japan A9G Specs.

Why do you think that is?
I've had several theories about that. heh.

  1. maybe a legal reason? ...they don't want to advertise features that are not yet available
  2. because they might cancel the feature in the future
  3. to stop people asking about an unfinished feature

Why are homekit/airplay2 mentioned in Japan but removed from US/UK sites?... Sony probably forgot to update the website... btw the US site hasn't removed this support page: Will my TV support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit?

I don't know how difficult adding these features is? I think adding Homekit should be easy to implement. Adding Airplay2 support might be harder, I don't know. I just think Sony is being very elusive about a feature that was widely advertised.

Ah so it looks like it’s only going to only be available via firmware. You would have thought they would simply release it via Android and webOS app stores to gain more market share.

That is what I thought. But when I saw that motion is much smoother in the Netflix app on my LG OLEDC9 than what ir comes from Netflix on Apple TV connected to it with Premium 2.1 cables ... Maybe its not.

Something is wrong with your settings because there is no difference at all.

Go to the ATVs settings and make sure that “Match frame rate” is enabled. This displays
24 frames per second content properly. This is necessary because the ATV is outputs 60 Hz so that tvOS’s UI is smooth but 60 Hz is no good for the actual content except games and all programs from ESPN, Fox and ABC.

Also you want Real Cinema to be on. Go to whatever preset you’re using on the C9, picture options and turn RC on if it’s off.

Real Cinema is always enabled on all of the C9’s webOS apps so you will always be getting the correct 5:5 pull down.

The only exception is when you turn on TruMotion (motion interpolation) or Motion Pro/OLED motion (black frame insertion). In this case 5:5 pull down is no longer possible because the TV is either creating new in between frames or inserting a black frame in between frames.

The cables have nothing to do with this. In fact as long as your installation is under 12 ft. or so, any high speed HDMI cable is fine. The ATV has a 2.0a port. It cannot use the extra bandwidth from a 48 Gbps cable, doesn’t output lossless audio nor use any sort of 2.1 feature.

I have a late 2018 4k 65inch Sony Bravia and it does not look like it is getting Airplay 2 or HomeKit, However I just bought another Apple TV 4k. And I can also use HomeKit and HomePod to turn the TV off and on which is an added bonus and then do not have to deal with Android on the TV itself.

I've had several theories about that. heh.

These are the replies I have had from Sony Europe:

To my initial question of when?

Their reply 23rd Oct:
Thank you for contacting Sony support.
We are sorry to learn that you have been waiting for the update that allows Airplay2 on your Sony KD-55XG9505. With reference to your enquiry, please note that we do not have a certain date for the future update that will be released to allow the Airplay2 on your TV, please keep an eye on the support page.
We would appreciate your patience and understanding.

My reply:
A big selling feature of the TV was the widely advertised Airplay 2 and Apple are stating on their website it will be on Sony TVs by the end of the year. See notes on this page near bottom “Sony smart TVs will be able to enjoy AirPlay 2 support later this year”
https://www.apple.com/uk/newsroom/2019/09/apple-tv-launches-november-1-featuring-originals-from-the-worlds-greatest-storytellers/

Also there as Sony articles confirming this:
https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00227057

Please confirm it will be coming by end of this year?

It would make sense to be soon as AppleTV app is rolling out November 1st!!

Lastly, the Sony listing for this TV: https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/...DP-X95G_SERIES-EN_GL-2018-11-M01-UNLOCKWORLDS no longer mentions Airplay. It 100% did only a month ago when I purchased the TV. Is Airplay still coming?!

Their reply 24th Oct:
Thank you for contacting Sony support.
We apologise for any unintended inconvenience caused to yourself.
With reference to your enquiry, we would like to confirm that your Sony KD-55XG9505 will support Airplay2, however, we do not have a specific date for the release.
You might also check the below link for the supported TVs from Apple website:
https://www.apple.com/ios/home/accessories/#section-tv

My reply:
Understand your not providing a specific date however does by end of year still apply?

Their reply 24th Oct:
With regards to your enquiry, please note that we can not specify a certain date, but we an confirm it is definitely going to be released.

So there you go, very vague. Doesn't sound like they are close. Which is contrary to this article...

I still don't get why not the A8G as well?
I have the same TV (AG8 in Europe) and I knew that it will not get AirPlay (for some reasons that only Sony knows), but I was counting on the TV+ app. Roku and Fire tv already have it.

It could be a simple Playstore app (if Google and Apple agree)
the sideloaded Fire TV apk seems to work perfectly on my AG8 (but you can’t login since it asks for login via the Amazon store)

Thanks for that, yea that is so vague. Removing HomeKit from the specs will piss off a lot of people.

Just curious how do you turn your TV on/off with AppleTV and HomePod? I thought that a TV can only be turned on/off using infrared from the AppleTV remote?

I read that AppleTV doesn't transmit on/off commands over HDMI-CEC?

Wait, so you're begging Apple for a way to *not* buy more Apple hardware? I'm not sure they'll have much empathy for your plight. 😜

I guarantee they make more on content than they do on AppleTV hardware. For them, making paid content available in more places earns them far more money - especially comparing against already sunk costs. I won't buy another AppleTV box, because my AppleTV 4K already does everything I need it to - if anything, I'd be likely to pass the box on to someone else who doesn't have a smart TV already when my smart TV adds Apple support, thereby adding another customer to Apple.

If this is fake why don’t you close the thread?
Hmm, I'm not sure if it is fake... the update on 9to5mac says this...

Update: Sony told us it was a mistake and they have no further news about the app launch for everyone, but it’s clearly coming in the near future since some people already got it.

I have it on my Sony TV (AG8) and it works perfectly. It plays in full 4K HDR
Only slight problem is that I can’t log in with my Apple ID.

The sideloaded Amazon Fire apk is just fine...
