Whilst there's some debate about the production of a new "home hub device", would Apple's time not be better spent re-marketing and upgrading the Apple TV puck, to become the defacto home hub powerhouse? There's lots of opportunities for it, especially in making it the central device in the home. Along side this there's also opportunities opening up on the gaming side of things, with the steady deterioration of the Xbox brand. Would it not be a prudent move to provide the device with competent hardware (A18 Pro - at least) to take advantage of that?

I understand where you’re coming from, and it would make sense to position it that way. The reality is that a capable Apple TV would push up to the pricing of a mini, which has an HDMI port. Ideally apple would release another front row system like they did in 2005. As to why the Apple TV won’t be the ideal HomeKit hub, I’d say that it’s muck harder to control with a remote than a touch screen HomePod. I’m sure that was in the works with the original Apple TV 4 which had a gyroscopic remote, which kinda sucked.

Apple has ( or had) an opportunity to take over and dominate the home automation world with the rumored AI and HomePod yet...... They seem to be unable to make their much vaunted and promised AI WORK !! It has to be a huge failure for the crashed space ship in Copertino that , after so much hype and glitz and glitter , Apple is at the bottom of the pack WRT AI and automation. Apple TV could be a key part of an Apple based system where the Mac or iPad etc actually CONTROLED what was on the gazzilion inch big screen and allowed the viewer to easily surf, preview , stack up a few channels (think football Saturday ) all from the comfy chair on your Mac . To do this Apple would have to FINALLY tear down the silos they have built around the computer and the Apple box and everything else that " could " be part of an Apple home. I understand that there are all sorts of workarounds to do these tasks BUT until the world of real home assistants driven by AI becomes easy for the NON hobbyist it will just be a patchwork of gadgets and gimmicks requiring a resident teenage wiz to operate.... The future IS PLUG and PLAY home automation, driven by AI and ONE OS ! Make it happen Apple or be left in the " dustbin of history "
